Kia Ora from New Zealand
Hey all. It seems a similar story around, liked doing Models as a kid and looking at getting back into it. It wasn't on my horizon until my wife bought me the Fine Molds 1/72 Millennium Falcon kit. Talk about "deep end". So to do it justice, I thought instead of diving straight in and messing it up, I would start some learning and research, and maybe try a few easier projects in the mean time. Thank god for the Internet and You Tube.
So a couple of quick questions to get started.
My main interest is in cold war/modern aviation and naval. I'm wondering if I should stick to a scale for aircraft eg 1/48 or 1/72. Is there an advantage of one over the other, and can anyone recommend a couple of good starter kits to look at while I learn painting and modelling?
Told my wife about 2am this morning after not being able to sleep watching the awesome ISM videos that she has unleashed a demon.

Welcome to ISM
Great to see you back at the hobby. Personally I would stick with 1/48 as it's a good size to learn with. 1/72 is a bit small IMO and makes painting and weathering tricky. Have a look at any of the tamiya offerings. Or you can follow my 13 part series of a build from start to finish using airfixs 1/48 me109

Re: Kia Ora from New Zealand
Hi mate - as others have said, for modern/Cold War aircraft, 1/48 scale is a great choice - not too big (although an F-15 in 1/48 is a good size!) but not too small.
Ive got a couple of 1/72 Sukhoi 27/34 under the bench (rubbish Italeri kits) and they are pretty big, but the details are lost.
Whereabouts in NZ are you?
And put your name in your signature (in the control panel) - always good to know a name (if not a face!)
cheers
Chris

Greetings from Palmy Nth.
Always good to have another kiwi modeller pop up on forums.
Good score on the falcon but I think you are right in looking for some other kits to get warmed up with.
Scifi is always good for upskilling as nobody can rivet count something fictitious (some may give it a good go) and the skills are very transferable to aircraft.
