ISM GBs & SiGs for 2015 - Have your say....

Post by Lee »

Well, it's soon becoming time where I have to work out the GBs & SiGs for 2015 so, I thought I'd throw this open and see what ideas you guys have for GBs & SiGs next year.

This is completely open and can involve any genre, style or scenario of modelling, we're just looking for your input and ideas. Paul and I already have a few in mind, but when we have plenty we'll open up a couple of polls and let you guys decide what our GBs & SiGs will be for 2015.

We are knocking the Long Term GBs on the head as they really don't seem to be very popular so, next year we will have 3 main ISM GBs and 4 main ISM SiGs plus the ISM Egg Plane SiG in April. With there being no LTGBs anymore it will open up a little time for members GBs or SiGs that are going to be very popular like the Dangerous Cat SiG this year and the Honour Coen SiG next year, which we can include in the schedule.....

So, let's hear your ideas.... :th:
Where does all the bloody time go.....?

OK, here goes....

How about a Mediterranean GB?

Could cover the desert war, invasion of Sicily and Italy. Naval battles in the Med. German paras on Crete. Partisans in the Balkans.
The siege of Malta- (lot's of Spitfires in blue camo, Italian fighters in gorgeous markings).

A bit wide in scope but lots of subjects for all types of builders.

Hi folks,

Here are a couple more potential GB suggestions to kick around:

- Special Forces: This could be anything from figurines to the vehicles and aircraft used to support them. Nice opportunity for some dioramas here.

- Iraq: Modern day vehicles used in the Iraq campaign/conflict.

- Rising Sun: WW2 Japanese related planes and AFVs, etc. You don't see too many WW2 Japanese related model aircraft/vehicles being built.

- Life on the Ocean Waves: Any boats or amphibious vehicles, eg: destroyers, support craft, hovercrafts, subs, etc. This is a good opportunity to take many ISM modellers out of their comfort zone - could be fun!

Anyway that is my 2 pence worth of suggestions. :)

Cheers,

Simon

some ideas :

Pacific War - Pacific War in general

Red Sun - You could include everything from Imperial Japan to modern Japan and this could be Samurai figures ,Russian-Japanese War , Japan WWI , Pre- WWII and WWII Planes , Armor , Ships ...

Oposing Fronts - Here the idea is to depict models or Dioramas with two oposing ships , planes or tanks ., soldiers ...think that a lot of different eras and possibilities could be done !

two ideas that come to mind... (I'll do some more pondering on this)

1. IDF... it sadly didn't make it in, this year
2. Figurama - A diorama using nothing but figures and dio-accessories (building, bridges, walls, sandbags, etc.) with maybe a minimum amount of figures used. Don't know how that came to me, but it would be cool to see dioramas with 20-25 figures being the main attraction.

I'd suggest a "Battle of Britain" SiG, a Korean War SiG. a Gulf war SiG and perhaps split it into groups such as....Flying machines / Ground Artillery and Armor and Figurines / Dioramas. On a personal note, I suggest splitting it into groups because, the armor guys perform such phenomenal work, that having their masterpieces within the same group as aircraft, which are not muddy and as battle weary as Tanks etc makes me wonder how you can separate the two and how you can fairly judge different elements within that GB or SiG? If you know what I mean.....basically, it's like comparing apples to oranges and I feel that it would be more of a fair playing field if it were apples to apples. Don't get me wrong, I love a challenge, but the challenge has to have fair rules....we don't allow the opposing Rugby team to wear helmets and carry clubs! :)

I also have an idea!!!

Sponsored battle machines:
In a time where the buget for defense is becoming increasingly scarce, our ministers have to start thinking about an alternative financing of tanks, aircraft or ships :

How about a Century Series jet SiG? I would also second the idea of a Rising Sun Build having NEVER built any WWII Japanese...

or how about a WHAT IF SiG or GB?? A very dear friend of mine built a P-61 in Vietnam era Navy camouflage schemes, for a just because he thought it would look cool

a star trek/ star wars build would be cool
like the idea of the film/ game / tv show one including table top games
or even a lighted sig (build and light a model using led's etc) could be intresting
an anime one which would include tanks planes and figures as well as gundam kits
a a10 warthog / thunderbolt II sig
modern day armour
spy planes / drones
post apocalyptic could including anything you could think of
well that all i could think off at the moment

IDF.

Both the recce and the IDF-theme sounds like fun ideas :thumb1:

There are also at least a couple of anniversaries that could fit in. 2015 it will be 70 years since WWII ended and 65 years since the Korean War began. Three ideas immediatly comes to mind:

-The End of the War: Anything that was in frontlin service in the final battles of the war (ie. the fighting around Japan). Note that the Soviet Manchuria offensive could be included. This could also give a nice opportunity to model quite a number of different Japanese aircrafts, as well as both USN, RN and IJN ships. Naturally the final battles for Germany could also be represented, but it does feel like the Pacific Theathre needs the extra love more than late war German armour ;)

-To late to fight: All the projects that almost made it to the frontlines of WWII. The German paper-panzers are rather well represented, but we also have things like the IS-3, Centurion, P-82 Twin Mustang, and so forth. It all depends on how the rules are written.

-Korean War: Simply stuff that took part in the war. Both sides, air, sea (somewhat limited) and land.

Edit:

And how could I forget, 75 years since the Battle of Britain (as well as the fall of France, the Norway-campaign, and the end of the Winter War), lots of early mark Spitfires, Messerschmitts and Stukas (as well as some other nice planes).

Im liking these two:

"Too late to fight/Paper Panzers/Luftwaffe 46 etc"

"Rising Sun/Pacific Theater" Id suggest limiting to WW2 Japanese and any of their adversaries

"WW2 Fleet Air Arm" - i.e RN carrier aircraft during WW2 (or anything that flew for the RN during the war)

The middle one because I just got the 1/32 Tamiya Zero and I might be ready to have a crack at it by next year!

There's some great ideas there and definitely a few that I like the look of.

There's been quite a lot of discussion lately about weathering, subtle weathering, over-weathering, not enough, too much, yada, yada......, well, how about a museum piece GB. It could be any topic, AFV, plane, car, train, anything as long as there's photographic evidence of it in a museum display. The model would then have to depict this display (not sure I could do a CLEAN tank!! :ooops: ). You could even get a pic of yourself stood next to the exhibit with your proud creation - who knows, it might even give people an excuse to meet up at various museums at the end of the GB.

And Lee, bearing in mind where you live, I expect nothing else other than the HMS Victory!!!! :eeek:

This could actually be quite a good one, as it weathering taste wouldn't come into play as much. It is also worth remembering that not all museum pieces are clean, there are quite a number of (sometimes partial) vehicles and airframes displayed in an 'as found' state, if someone still wants to go all-out with weathering.

For those who might like to enter something that is not necessarily military in nature my suggestions are:

Search and Rescue
Any scale any genre. Opens up a wide range of options I think.

Two wheels
Any vehicle that was designed to run on two wheels. Obviously bikes etc, but chariots etc count too. Out of my comfort zone but would be a nice challenge.

Might get wet
Anything related to being on, over, or under water.

Taxi!
Anything related to a regular transport/taxi service.

I like truckin'
Trucks of any kind.

Note these do not exclude military subjects but provide a broad enough remit to include nonmilitary subjects. And, because of the excellent approach to judging the build threads on this forum, I'm hoping these won't be any more difficult to judge than any of the others.

Here's a crazy idea:

Kind of a carry-over of the Rising Sun idea.
The Red Sun at Dawn: The IJN's First Strike Carrier Group at Pearl Harbor.
Basically you can do any of the components of the task force assigned to hit Pearl Harbor.
Any of the planes. Any of the 6 carriers, countless destroyers, cruisers, battleships. Figures of crew, famous officers.
The Japanese Manufacturers (Tamiya, Hasegawa, Fujimi, Aoshima, etc..) for sure have all of them. I'm pretty sure Tamiya, Hasegawa and Aoshima combined on a project to build as much IJN as they could in a series.

We would aim for broad coverage and at the end, see if we built the entire group.

Carriers:
Aka
Kaga
Soryu
Hiryu
Shokaku
Zuikaku

Battleships:
Hiei
Kirishima

Cruisers:
Tone
Chickuma
Abukama

Destroyers: Tanikaze
Urakaze
Isokaze
Hamakaze
Kasumi
Arare
Kagero
Shiranui
Akigumo
Akebono
Ushio

30 Submarines

Aircraft:
Zero
Val
Kate

Another Possibility in a similar vein:

"The World Awakens" - the Battle of Tsushima
Ships from either the Japanese or Russian Flights at Tsushima. However, kits for the ships would be harder to find.
Basically I only know of Fujimi, Hasegawa and Zvezda which produce those types of kits.

I would love to participate in:

Homeland GB: Any subject and any type of model as long as it origins from your own country! This would be my favourite!

Recon SiG: Everything that is meant to do recon (special forces, Recon variants of any aircraft, scouting vehicles)

Movie stars GB: anything from the movies.

Swedish SiG: Anything from the Swedish armed forces

thats my 6 cents

How about a
Storm Warning:GB

Anything with an appropriate name (thinking hurricane, thunderbolt, typhoon) can enter..covers Brit/US/Italian/German WWII Aircraft as well as more modern versions of the same (Thunderbolt II Euro fighter Typhoon, EE Lightning) as well as ships (Tclass sub HMS Thunderbolt for example) Not sure about vehicles but im sure there would be some

Classic/Modified car build sounds good to
Oh and the Med group build..thats one id get interested in :)

What about a "what if" Crimea war? With NATO and other countries getting involved in ground warfare with Russia and its allies nations? I guess like people could build any modern vehicle (or what ever said nation uses), aircraft or ship?

I also like the Gundam/Mecha thing, maybe have mechas engaging tanks?

Im open to most suggestions but I really think we need to get people out of their comfort zones, even just a small step outside.
I have learned more by changing up my builds than any other way, the amount of transferable skills is amazing.

I like the 'clean' tank idea and the sponsored idea as it encourages clean builds for those used to weathering, and gets a bit of colour into builds.
I also like the Movie or TV Series idea as it gives so many options from auto to air, from gundam to diorama. But I dont envy the judges :-)

also a end of WW2 pacific war build as this is also hardly ever done

Great ideas so far. The only problem I have with some is that they are military orientated only. I think you need to keep one gb where all modellers can join.

I have seen themes like a splash of colour, blast from the past, dirty bitches and these can incorporate all modellers. I mean we have floaty, wingy, wheelie, figures, diorama, tracky and wingy. So thinking hats on for a universal one.

How about something to do with trucks...? Plenty of people on here build tanks, aircraft, bikes, all sorts of cars, floaty things, sci-fi stuff, figures, etc... But with the exception of tiking, no one usually builds truck models. Everyone could join and you're practically certain that anyone who participates is going to be out of his comfort zone with this one.

The only problem is people don't want to pay money to build a model they don't want. I am trying to take the approach of a theme that anyone can join with their chosen field. Best if people can do what they want to ensure participation.

I like the inclusive themes.
What about "road and track" that covers anything that can legally be driven on a road or racetrack.
I like the 'era' idea, you could say 60's or 80's and anything from that era, air, afv, car, bike, boat as long as it was manufactured in that era

I like the ideas of a Mediterranean/desert theme and Japanese WW2. For people interested in military subjects, you could also do a group build focused on one branch of the military or one nationality. Like, anything U.S. Marine Corps, for example. How about a checkered flag build, where anything goes as long as it was raced in competition. It could be boats, planes, cars or anything else as long as it was raced.
