Hi everyone
I've just subscribed to receive the De Agostini 'Build the Millennium Falcon' - which over 100 weekly issues (costing a shade under £900) will deliver a 1:1 replica of the prop Millennium Falcon used in the films. Model looks immense so quite excited. The model can be built without any re-painting but I think doing so (and adding 'aging', weathering and battle scars) will enhance it no end.
This will be my first foray into repainting/model building - apart from a few Airfix as a child (I'm now 53!) - so a project this size and cost will require me to become proficient in use of the air brush and techniques along the way.
Interested to know of any other loon who has committed to this 2 year project - and desperate for as much help, hints 'n tips and support that I can get.
Dave

Re-painting the Millennium Falcon
Paul - I'm selling a kidney to fund it!Paul wrote:Would love to have this but its too expensive for me, look forward to seeing your built though and it'll look amazing once built
Seriously, both issue 1 (£2.99) and issue 2 (full price) are on the shelf in newsagents now - if you get an opportunity to look at the pieces I'd appreciate any pointers regarding paints to use on this build (and recommended colours/weathering). I've placed an order for Alclad grey primer - and will clean this out of the airbrush using cellulose thinners (probably the decorate stuff from Halfords)
I'm also considering using Tamiya acrylics to re-paint the model on top of the Alcalad primer (is this a suitable mix?)
Have also placed an order for some Tamiya X20-A thinners for cleaning the Tamiya acrylics out of my airbrush (did I also pick up from your YouTube video that concentrated car windscreen fluid is a good bet to clear most of the acrylic paint out before using the X20-A?
Regards
Dave

Hi Dave
I didn't think I would, but I just took the plunge and subscribed too. Guess I'll have much fun painting that puppy in about two years
Not sure exactly where I will put it though...oops

Well done Sir - I feel a little better knowing someone as experienced and skilled as you are doing this model as well. Hope you'll be willing to lead/hold my hand through this?
I've started taking some sounding regarding types of paint, primers, colours, etc. Looks like Tamiya Acrylics are favoured - with a Badger primer.
Any views/thoughts? You may want to take our trivial ping pong off line until we actually start and have something worthwhile to share? If agreeable I'll let you have my email

Re: New Recruit: De Agostini's Millennium Falcon
Thanks, that's very kind of you
I actually replied to your other post here: http://intscalemodeller.com/viewtopic.p ... 57#p147857 with a little advice on the paints for the hull, as least what I found works well. For anyone else reading this thread, I'll be going with Tamiya acrylics, thinners and primers for the main paintwork, and much of the weathering and streaking will be done with Mig Productions 502 Abteilung oils. Varnish-wise most likely I'll stick to Humrbrol rattle-can matte, I really like it.
Airbrush-wise everyone has their favourites. I prefer gravity-fed brushes with the little cup rather than suction brushes with the bottle, and I'll be using my DeVilbiss DAGR for the paintwork and my klunky old knackered Spraycraft for any varnishes or harsh stuff I may need to spray. In terms of cleaning the brush, I tend to use airbrush cleaner (any will do, Ultimate's and Vallejo's are very good). Tamiya thinner is fine but airbrush cleaner fluid is much less expensive. I also ocasionally spray a little Carson Paint Killer to remove any paint that refuses to come off the airbrush. The DAGR is solvent-resistant so can take any paint from acrylic to automotive lacquer.
I'd be more than happy to be build buddies ^_^ Feel free to PM me your email addy so we can knock heads through the build. You can do it, and I'll be happy to help out
I'm kind of fidgety that it will be little bits over two years - it's going to make planning the painting really hard when we won't know when pieces are turning up! But I'm really looking forward to it though! Now I am just waiting for the first few issues to arrive.
