Airfix 1/72 Harrier GR9A

Post by TonyCnyc »

Now that the Skyhawk is done, time for another one.
This is the 1/72 Airfix BAe Harrier GR9A, kit number A55300, No. 800 Naval Air Squadron in it's last year of service in 2010. The kit was one of the first few I purchased when I got back into the hobby a year-and-a-half ago. Now is a good time to put it together. Should be a relatively quick OOB build, with a very easy color scheme and not much in the way of decals. :)

What's in the box:

Build progress.

The interior was brush painted, adding a bit of weathering in the wheel bays after the paint had dried.

Some clean up and putty work along the seams for the main body and wing halves.

Weapons went together well; minimal seam/putty/rescribe work. The 2-piece exhaust nozzles leave much to be desired. Luckily not too visible if doing the wheels/flap down version. But if in flight I would replace them with resin. The engine intakes needed some putty/sanding/rescribing.

Next off to primer and painting.

This kit looks really good...I assume it's a new tool?

Yes, I believe it's a 2011 mould. Thanks!

Getting ready for priming using Badger's primer.

After priming, a coat of Pledge/Kear, and then...
Image

Some table salt as a masking agent and a darker grey to give it...

A more mottled look to the monotone grey.
Image

After adding in some of the other bits, I then blended it with a light misting of the lighter grey.

Followed by an oil wash to highlight the panel lines and give a more grunge look.

Next up are the decals, a few touch ups and bits, and a flat coat to finish her off.
