Eduard 1:48 Lavochkin La-5 limited edition

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys
this will be the build thread of the first of my entries in this group build
i will be building the Eduard Lavochkin La-5 limited edition kit in 1:48 scale

I will do a intro to the plane later in a seperate post as i need a computer to do that instead of a phone as i need to switch between screens a lot
so for now i will do a intro of the kit and i will do the rest later today

Image
the box art looks very cool
there are 5 versions you can make with this kit
but i think i want the one from the artwork as that looks cool to me

Image
this is what you see when you open the box
1 big bag with sprues allthough they are packed in smaller bags in the big one
A seperate bag with clear parts
a bag with resin wheels (round, not weighted)
a bag of photo etch
masks
Decal sheet
instruction book

I had a short moment of shock when i saw that this is a Zvezda kit and i know that the general opinion of Zvezda isn't the best
but i will build.it anyway and will find out how it turns out

sprue F

Image
decals

Image
photo etch parts

Image
masks and resin wheels

Image
instruction book

Image
Image
Image
4 of the painting versions

Image
but i will be going for this version

And that is all i have for now
I will post a brief history lesson in a bit and then it is time to start building this kit
something i already did on the first day of the year
but i was so caught up with building the last couple of days i forgot to make a thread for it

Thanks for stopping by and having a look

Thanks Lee
i already started building it
it is complex to build well the interior any way
while i was doing some dry fitting i found the bad fits of wich there where plenty but still not as many as i expected
it needs filling alright but the rear of the plane is as smooth as a babies butt so i can't ruin any panel lines there

hi guys
so it is time for a update and a brief history lesson for this build
as some of you may have seen i finished building it already as i had some long days at the bench the past few days

but first a little bit of background information and then i will go to the build
The La-5's heritage began even before the outbreak of war, with the LaGG-1, a promising yet underpowered aircraft. The LaGG-3 was a modification of that design that attempted to correct this by both lightening the airframe and fitting a more powerful engine. Nevertheless, this was not enough, and the lack of power remained a significant problem.

In early 1942, two of the LaGG-1 and -3's designers, Semyon Lavochkin and Vladimir Gorbunov, attempted to correct this deficiency by experimentally fitting a LaGG-3 with the more powerful Shvetsov ASh-82 radial engine. Since the LaGG-3 was powered by an inline engine, they accomplished this by grafting on the nose section of a Sukhoi Su-2 (which used this engine). By now, the shortcomings of the LaGG-3 had caused Lavochkin to fall out of Joseph Stalin's favour, and factories previously assigned to LaGG-3 construction had been turned over to building the rival Yakovlev Yak-1 and Yak-7. The design work required to adapt the LaGG-3 to the new engine and still maintain the aircraft's balance was undertaken by Lavochkin in a small hut beside an airfield over the winter of 1941-1942, all completely unofficially.

When the prototype took flight in March, the result was surprisingly pleasing - the fighter finally had a powerplant that allowed it to perform as well in the air as it had been supposed to on paper. After flying, the LaG-5 (the change in name reflecting that one of the original LaGG designers was no longer with the programme), Air Force test pilots declared it superior to the Yak-7, and intensive flight tests began in April.

By July, Stalin ordered maximum-rate production of the aircraft and the conversion of any incomplete LaGG-3 airframes to the new configuration, now simply known as the La-5. The prototype was put in mass production almost immediately in factories located in Moscow and in the Yaroslav region. Design changes for main production La-5 models included fixed slats to improve all-round performance. While still inferior to the best German fighters, the La-5 proved to be every bit their match closer to the ground. With most of the air combat over the Eastern Front taking place at altitudes of under 5,000 m (16,404 ft), the La-5 was very much in its element.

Further refinement of the aircraft involved cutting down the rear fuselage to give the pilot better visibility, making this version the La-5F. Later, a fuel-injected engine, a different engine air intake and further lightening of the aircraft led to the designation La-5FN that would become the definitive version of the aircraft. A full circle turn took 18–19 seconds. Altogether, 9,920 La-5s of all variants were built, including a number of dedicated trainer versions, designated La-5UTI. Very late La-5FN production models had two 20mm Berezin B-20 cannon installed in the cowling in place of the heavier two 20mm ShVAK (both were capable of a salvo weight of 3.4 kg/s). Further improvements of the aircraft would lead to the Lavochkin La-7.

A number of La-5s continued in the service of Eastern Bloc nations after the end of the war, including Czechoslovakia.

Image
Image
Image
Image
asyou can see using the men near the plane it is not very big
if you compare it to let's say a P-47 where many pilots managed to stand under the enginecowling
thanks to Wikipedia for that information
and now it is time for the build

Image
the building starts with this
i think they are magazines for the cannons

Image
Image
then you need to make the interior framework
it looks a bit challenging but it actually fits together quite well

Image
a little cockpit floor with footpedals

Image
at this point you already get to work on the wings
where you need to add some interior detail for the landing gear bays

Image
next where the upper parts of the wings wich are made from 2 parts
1 part is the wing root and part of the wing while the other is the rest of the wing
for some reason the right wing fits great and not a drop of filler was needed but the left wing was a different story

Image
the frme was glued on the wing section

Image
interior details where added to the fuselage and frame

Image
then the engine is next
the actual cylinders look pretty good but i think the tubes and pushrod tubes are a bit soft on the detail

Image
the 2 rows of cylinders are glued together and the front of the engine is placed
the axle looks a bit long but i left it as is untill i had the rest of the fuselage build up to see it it was the right lenght
and spoiler alert ,it is the right lenght

Image
as you can see the inlet tubes don't have the best fit and i filled them with some thick ca glue

Image
the exhaust parts snap in place and could be done without glueing but they do have some minor seams on them

Image
the fuselage halfs with all the styrene parts added

Image
how it looks before painting

Image
the frame and interior where painted with mr hobby aqueous H317 grey
i put the loose parts back on for the pic though

Image
the gun sight was painted black

Image
the instrument panels and seat where dressed up with the photo etch set

Image
a better look at the seat

Image
the pe for the fuselage halfs
at this point i had to make a choise as there is more pe going in there but it has to be on the inside of the frame and not on the fuselage
so i could weather it at this point or later on once it was buttoned up
i picked the last option as i test fitted the parts and thought i still had enough access to weather it later

Image
the painted engine
i didn't weahter it because it will be invisible later on as there is a big disc behind the prop that blocks the view

Image
the fuselage halfs where glued on the wing section
i used ca glue to do this as it was hard to keep clamps in the right place so i had to hold it while the glue was setting and ca glue dries fast so i didn't have to sit with a plane in my hand all day
and as i use thick ca glue it served as a filler in some spots

Image
more filling with ca glue
this part had the worst fit up to now
i use the white Ultimate sander to smooth out the ca glue once it is dry as that sander goes through the glue very fast
the others do the job aswell but slower so i used those later on to get a smooth finish after the use of the course sander

Image
the engine was fitted

Image
all the front panels where added

Image
the cooling unit and pe screens in the cowling where placed

Image
the landing gear has a good fit and was easy to put in place

Image
the landing gear doors are completely made from pe
but there are some styrene ones in the kit

Image
with some gunmetl grey i added some chipping in the cockpit

Image
a wash was done with Ultimate dark dirt but it had very little to hold on to but you can see some in the seat

Image
some European dust pigment (mig prod.) was added as the dirt from the pilot's boots

Image
the landing gear doors on the back where fitted

Image
the resin wheels didn't fit the first time so i drilled the hole with a bigger drill bit and i flattened the wheels as they where not weighted

Image
the clear parts where added
i decided to make it with a closed cockpit

Image
the mask set that came with the kit was used to mask the clear parts and now it is ready for some paint

and that is all i have for now
i will get a new update up once i painted it
thanks for stopping by and having a look

The detail is good but the fit on some parts is a bit poor
i had to do a lot of filling at the back of the wing roots and 1 wing
the cowlings don't fit all that well either but i almost think you are supossed to put them in a opened position
but some hinges would have been nice for that
but if i keep the price in mind along with the pe , masks and resin wheels that come with this kit then it is pretty good allthough a bit of a challenge

Hi guys
so here is a little update for this build
it has been painted by now and is ready for a gloss coat
i don't know if i said it before but i am going for the boxart verion with the big mouth on it
i just don't know what kind of mouth it is but that is not really important to me anyway as it is the best looking version of the 5 scheme's that come with the kit

Image
I began in the wrong order as i painted the grey first
i didn't do any pre shading either but that can be fixed with some postshading on the higher parts of the plane i didn't do any under the wing
but i just followed the instruction and used the light blue

Image
i then masked all the lower areas in case i get some overspray and painted the grey base color wich is a mix of dark gull grey and the interior grey i used before
because i only had extra dark gull grey i used a bit more of the interior color in the mix
For the light post shading i used the interior grey
but there aren't that many panel line to begin with

Image
as there is a black area in between the teeth of the mouth i needed some masks to paint that
i traced the decals on the protective paper that was on the decalsheet and cut out the part that needs to be black

Image
here is the result after i removed the masks
the cowling is a tough place to mask but it is better than to paint it after the decal is on

Image
the nose cone is painted white but the tip is painted in mr metal stainless steel
it must be a bolt end or something as there where only 2 guns on this plane and those are on top of the cowling

Image
the pistons in the landing gear where brush painted with mr metal color aluminium

And that is all i have for now
i will have some better pics once the decals are on

Thanks for stopping by and untill next time
Cheers , Mark

Looking great Mark. I'm doing the Zvezda LA5 so it will be interesting to compare, they should go together exactly the same apart from the PE and what have you.

thank you Avgas
It should be very close as this is the Zvezda kit , only with the eduard stuff in the box
all of that can be bought seperate aswell
i was a bit dissapointed with the wheels though as they where round and not weighted wich is something i would look for if i buy after market wheels
but Eduard does this with more kits as the 2 Eagles i ordered both have normal wheels but they only difference between those kits is that 1 is a normal Eagle and the other is a Strike Eagle so part from the extra seat and cockpit parts the 2 kits have the same after market goodies
the burner cams look great though and if i would build a Academy kit i would use those for sure

Thank you
the other options where not that intresting to me
3 of the 5 looked almost the same part from some decals and 1 was white washed wich was a option for me but this looked more intresting i think

Thank you Matt
i hope so but i am going to do something i never did before with this build
after i had a look online i found that each small Soviet star on the side was a confirmed kill
just like you see on American and British planes
the version i am building has a pretty big collection so it seems it is a older plane at the point that the decals resemble it
so it will get a pretty heavy weathering (for plane standards) wich means a lot of tiny chipping in the front and visible markings from soot and gunpowder residue on the cowling and that kind of thing
the Soviets didn't look after their planes like the other Allies did
if it would fly without falling apart and the guns worked it was good enough to put it in action
so that is basicly where this is going but i don't want to over do it or it will look like a heavy weathered tank and that is not my goal either

Thanks Frans
there is not that much photo etch on there
most is hidden away in the cockpit
building a plane isn't so hard to do
i find that painting it is much harder with all those weird shapes
atleast a tank is made up from straight parts of metal

Thanks RW
it is not a bad kit but not the best i ever build either
i had to force the entire front together and use ca glye to keep it in place
but it was a X-Mas gift so i can't complain too much about it
it a fun build just a little complex in some places

Hi guys
just a mini update for now
the decals are on and it is ready for a second gloss coat that i will put on tomorrow

So here is the result of the decalling session

And that is how she looks at the moment
i will try to start the second gloss coat tomorrow morning so i can start weathering later that day
but first i have some reading to do as i never really weathered a plane except for a wash
so i am pretty sure i can do more then just that
thanks for stopping by
cheers Mark

Thanks guys
much apreciated

I had a good read about the weathering allthough the FAQ book doesn't mention anything about Russian/Soviet planes they do explain some things about the weathering of the colors i used
so i may try some of those techniques to make this plane look a bit more battleworn
it has a big collection of victory markings so i highly doubt it was a new plane

Wow, you build these things like there is no tomorrow. :wtf:

Love your paintwork on this one. Off course it's a very nice scheme also.

Looks like the gear door (on the legs) is touching the floor?

Thank you Peppie
it just looks like they touch the ground
they are very close but they don't touch it
i think it is the wheel color that makes it look like a shadow but they are about 1 mm above the ground

Hi guys
time for the final update for this build
i finished it tonight so i will be posting a final reveal aswell
but first the last steps of the build

Image
after the decals i applied a second coat of Aqua gloss
once that was dry i did some chipping on the metal parts of the plane
i used vallejo modelcolor gunmetal grey for this and applied it with a small pointy brush

Image
i used the same paint for the prop
but i applied about 4 or 5 small dots and dragged them backwards with my finger to make these long chipping patches

Image
i then used a wash
i used Mig prod. dark wash wich is a black colored wash
it is a bit hard to see as the panel lines are very narrow and pretty shallow
so they didn't take up a lot of the wash

Image
I have seen several builds before that had some streaking on the planes
this is mostly on planes that operate from sandy and dusty airstrips like the Corsair and a lot of Soviet planes as the Germans blew up the runways of their airfields while they where on the retreat
so the Soviets often had to use improvised airstrips wich where often made up by compressing a lot of sand into a flat runway
so for my first attempt at this i used AK streaking effects for dark yellow vehicles

Image
With a flat brush and some AK thinner i refined the streaks untill they where very thin and not too visible

Image
they showed up better under the wings but the light blue makes for a better base for this effect
and it would get more dirt there then on top of the wings

Image
after that was dry i applied a coat of ultra matte varnish from AK
and i added the location lights in the wings

Image
after the matte coat the streaking on top of the wings became more visible
That was a lucky shot really as i wasn't expecting it to happen
but i know now

Image
i then painted the location lights
clear green for the right side and clear red for the left side
i used the mr hobby aqueous colors for this wich are easy to use with a brush and cover pretty good
better then the Tamiya clear paints wich are harder to get in a even coat over the clear parts
in my opinion anyway

Image
i made the antenna wires with some stretched sprue and painted them with some paint that i had left from the base color of the plane
i mix too much paint if i have to mix it myself so i keep them in small containers with a lid so i have some left in case i have to touch up some spots

Image
i added some heavy exhaust stains with black pigments
i have been reading a article about Soviet planes recently and that claims that the engines would spit out a lot of smoke and soot untill they where at the right temperature and some engines where worse then others but the La series had some of these dirty engines so i decided to do some heavy staining

Image
to get the effect of the plane taking off and landing on a sand or dirt airstip i used some Mig prod. european dirt pigments on the wheels

Image
i then put the prop and spinner on the axle and called this build finished

So that is all i have
i will post a final reveal to complete this build and then it is truelly finished
i am getting more intrested in plane building lately so this is no where near the last plane i will build
in fact i am planning several entries in the GB's and SIG's that are planes
but i will be building some others aswell if i get the chance
i have been reading the FAQ for aircraft modelling book and i have seen a lot of things that i want to try and improve on
and i have some Eduard Spitfires in the stash so those will be good kits to learn new things
Anyway before i keep rambling on
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
untill next time
Cheers ,Mark

It's awesome!
I love the streaking, very realistic.
The soot by the exhaust looks spot on to me, well done! :th:
