Thank you very much Troy
i will try to source the missing stuff this week
once the magnets are here and i placed them i can fill the gaps and start painting
if i can find some good mesh i will build the bedspring armor
but those will be painted seperate anyway so i don't need to build them right away

Hi guys
more "newsflash" then a actual update
my magnets arrived today and i tested them right away
they seem to be pretty strong for their size and they hold the parts together fairly well
Image
i glued 8 of them in the lower turret part and 8 in the upper part

Image
it looks like it is glued
they 2 turret parts didn't fit this good before as they kept popping open all the time

Image
they seem to be strong enough to hold the parts together
even when i hold it upside down

I will do the same with the hull to see how many i need for that and then i will make some holes in the hull and turret walls so i can glue them in there
so the magnets won't be that visible later on because the way they look now looks kind of bad but i had to know how many i needed and the parts where they will go still need some attention anyeay as you can see by the poorly covered epm's and such
but that will be the next thing on my to do list as the Hind will be primed first
but i can work on this everytime the paint on that needs to dry

And that was my newsflash
thanks for stopping by and having a look
and hopefully i will be back with a update somewhere around the weekend
Cheers, Mark

Thank you very much Patrick
the magnets are putting up quite a fight at the moment
i don't see any other solution then to glue a strip next to the gap in the sponsons
just to cover it
and i the turret they won't go in the walls either as that isn't thick enough but partially burried in there works well enough for me
i still need to make 2 magnet holders in the hull and fill the gaps there
then i will focus on the turret again and make a weldseam on it to cover the seam that is in between the turret parts
and finally i will do some scratch building on the interior to complete the fueltanks and cover the suspension

Hi guys
so a quick little update for now
I have fitted the magnets and worked on all the EPM's and holes that are found in the interior
once i did some final sanding it will be ready for some paint

Image
i reduced the amount of magnets in the turret to 8
4 on each part and i only kept the ones that are in the corners

Image
but it works just as good as you can see here
the gun a d mantlet where placed to give it a more complete look but they are still unglued

Image
for the hull i used the larger magnets i have
these are the ones in the front

Image
and i used only 2 in the back
they are fitted in the middle of the sponson as i needed enough room to make a support for the magnets in the upper hull

Image
i discovered that the gaps where caused by the upper hull as that seems to be bend a little
but the magnets where not strong enough to keep it down so i made these strips to hide the gap and sanded them down so they are flush with the sponson of the lower hull

Image
After i was looking at some reference i decided that i won't be adding anything on the front
some T-34's had this little raised step on the front
so i will leave it like this

Image
the gap at the back was also filled up with some strip styrene that i sanded in to the shape i needed
there still is a seamline but there is suppossed to be one
this is just a little wider but nothing i think needs more work

Image
then the holes on the interior where filled
there are a lot of them but i can only fill the last ones when the external fueltanks are fitted
but those have to be painted first and then placed on the hull

Image
then another quick testfit for the picture and it looks like it all fits

And that is all i have for now
i will abandon the idea of the bedspring armor because i simply can't find a mesh that is the right size
beside that the way that they where mounted on the tank would be rather flimsy and i think it would break to easy
so i will have just the tank without any wild scratch building for it
so if all goes according to plan i should be able to get this thing painted by the end of the weekend or the beginning of next week
i will do some chipping using chipping fluids so it will be a step by step on the exterior as i think it would take too long to paint over the rust base in one session (the chipping stuff looses it's effectiveness over time)
so next time you will see this build it will be painted on the exterior and later i will do the interior

Thanks for stopping by and having a look
untill next time and happy modelling
Cheers ,Mark

Hi guys
so a little bit more progres was made with this big tank
I started to paint the exterior and have that finished up to the point that i have to decide if i want to paint the markings on there or use the decals wich apperantly are wrong as there is wrong letter in one of them

So here is the progres so far
Image
i started the painting with a coat of Ammo old rust

Image
then i added spots of Ammo dark rust

Image
and some spots of medium rust (ammo)

Image
to dull the rather bright colors of the dark and medium rust i gave the entire tank a light coat of old rust wich i misted on

Image
to add a bit more detail to the colors i used Mig productions standard rust and light rust washes
i splattered them on the tank using a brush and a cocktail stick
if you press the brush in a downward movement against the stick the bristles will spring back into their place causing the wash to be launched against the model
if some spots are too bright you can add a bit more standard rust wash and blend it down so it becomes a bit darker

Image
this is after i blended some of the light rust spots

Image
the finished result of the rust stages and the products i used
these don't have to be the best around but it is what i have and use untill they are used up

Image
a close up of the splattered wash on the paint
i didn't use any varnish or clear coat before the wash as it doesn't matter if it causes stains
that is even better if it does

Image
then i coated the tank with 2 coats of aqua gloss to protect the paint layers from the chipping fluid and the chipping proces wich can damage your paint some time (happened to me more then once)
I have mr hobby Aqueous H420 and H423 that i will mix to get the base color
i mixed them in about a 1:1 ratio

Image
the base color is on

Image
i did a bit of panel fading or high lighting with H422
all the greens i used are a Luftwaffe colors according to Gunze but i think they work for Russian and Soviet armor aswell

Image
i then started the chipping
i had a feeling the chipping fluid didn't do much so it was more work then i hoped it would be

Image
the external fueltanks where often used as a seat by infantry so the tops can be chipped more then other places
and this fuel tank is filled with some bulletholes so that makes it rust even more

Image
the chipping is finished
In some places the chipping is very hard to see because the chipping is very small so it still looks rather green here

Image
Image
But if you get closer you can see it

My plan is to use a lot of washes , streaking and oil paints to make a pretty heavy weathered vehicle
not so much with mud and dust but finer layers of dirt
at the moment i am working on the interior where i want to build up the fueltanks and close the suspension housing
once that is ready i will paint the interior and decide if i will paint the markings or use decals for it
because of the size i should be able to paint it
but i will worry about that later

And that is all i have for now
thanks for stopping by and untill next time
Cheers ,Mark

Thank you very much Sven and Jens
the shear size can be a bit draining
I used a lot of paint already
it took up more then half a bottle of the old rust paint and more then a full bottle of the Aqueous
just to get a color on it
that will go on with the weatherung as i expect to use a lot of washes on it and it has a pretty big surface to cover
and the same thing will happen with things like grimw streaks and rust streaks
but it needs to be finished in time
from what i have seen so far not a single member of ISM ever entered such a big vehicle in a GB before and i feel that if i enter a build i should finish in time
besides that the big blocks that i use to put all the part on are getting in the way so i don't have much room to put other builds at the moment

Since I build dios for every kit, this size is a bit too much for me. And I see your point about space on the bench. I've got troubles with all the models (vehicle and buildings) for this GB and I think it's altogether as big as your T-34 alone. Stunning! :)

It isn't as big as you would think Jens
it is about 20 to 25 cm wide and 50.5 long
but all the seperate parts take upa lot of space
i have almost everything on sticks so stuff like the ammo ,engine and gear box are not yet in the hull
once those are done it won't be as bad
it will get a base later on once the vehicle is ready but that will roughly the same size as the tank
or i will have problems displaying it

Hi huys
just a little update for now as there was some progres but not as much as i would like
I had a bit of a loss of mojo so i didn't do any modelling for a couple of days this week
but after my shopping spree therapy everything is back to normal
i dis some work on the interior of the tank
Mainly closing up the fuel tanks as those where just the fronts and that would look really ugly when the upper hull is removed
so i closed all the open parts on the lower hull and that is what i have for today

Image
the sides of the front suspension units where closed with styrene sheet
there is a seam but that is filled by now

Image
the back had the same problem but here i also have the fueltanks to worry about
as there is no how to online about doing this i had to figure it out while i was working on it
so i closed the suspension blocks first

Image
i then started to build up the sides and top

Image
then a large front was made and glued in place

Image
the last little bits where closed up and now it is ready for some filler

Image
and here it is after sanding
it is now ready for some primer

I actually started to prime and paint the interior
i am using the Ultimate primer in white but it isn't going as well as i would like
i don't think the primer is the problem though but the airbrush setup
i got most of it down and it is smooth but i have a lot of clogging and splattering
i think the problem is the needle size
i am currently working with a 0.4mm needle/nozzle wich is the largest i have but i think a 0.6 will work better
to get the result i have now i had to crank up the pressure to 50 psi wich is very high and it is getting near the max that the airbrush can handle
but the result is good enough and i will finish up the interior with Tamiya flat white
then it is time for a little bit of detail.painting in the crew compartment and after that i can start to weather the interior and exterior
allthough i will have to paint the markings on the exterior
i haven't decided if i will use a brush or make some masks and spray it
because the exterior surface is very rough i think masking will lead to a lot of bleeding paint under the mask
but i haven't reaced that point yet
i still have some other painting to first
but the mojo is back and i am looking forward to finishing this build and make some room
those big styrene blocks that hold the parts are really getting in the way and i am looking forward to some other builds aswell

So thanks for stopping by and having a look
cheers , Mark

Ps : don't build so fast i had a hard time just to find my own build in this long list of builds

Thanks Smiffy
the rust didn't take me very long
i sprayed the base color on the first day and all the rest was done the day after
i did the entire tank in rust because i wasn't sure where i would do all the chipping and worn spots
that is why i just did the entire tank
it does take up a massive amount of paint though

i think i will do the detail painting today while the aqua gloss on some other builds is drying
once all the parts are weathered and chipped i can put everything together
and i am working on a plan for the base
i don't know exactly what it will be but i am thinking about a street with a wall in the back and some rubble so the workable suspension can be showed
but that is for the future , first i will have to finish the tank

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys
So after being not very productive for a while i picked the big T-34 back up and went on with painting the interior of the tank
That means that by now the build is just about ready for the first steps of the weathering but i will show the painting for now

Image
I started out with repriming the interior
I wasn't very happy with the coat of Ammo primer that was on there so i sanded the uneven areas and resprayed it with the white Ultimate primer
That took a long time but i think that is because i don't have a very large needle/nozzle setup in my airbrush
I am planning to buy a 0.6mm setup for this in the future as i think the 0.4 i have was too small and it only worked good when i had the 0.2 needle in the 0.4 nozzle to get a bigger opening
But the primer went down very smooth and with a good result
I sprayed a few coats of Tamiya flat white over it after the primer was dry to get a more even finish as i didn't spray the primer very evenly

Image
After that i started out with the ammo boxes
I painted them black and the base color of the straps is vallejo khaki
The straps could be metal or canvas and i went for the canvas look to have a bit more color in there

Image
The entire box was then dry brushed using Vallejo buff
It didn't show on the straps though but i think it gives a nice worn look on the black boxes

Image
And finally the boxes where finished by making paint chips using vallejo gunmetal grey
I used both a sponge and a brush for this
They look pretty beaten up but they are the floor for the crew in the turret
So they would be standing on these boxes the entire time and that would damage the paint in no time

Image
Next where the seats for the driver and bow gunner
Because they where white already i only painted the leather covered parts in vallejo leather brown

Image
Image then used orange ocre and buff from Vallejo to dry brush the worn areas

Image
For the worn leather look i will use these 2 oil paints
They are raw umber and nickel titanium yellow

Image
I made some dots on the seats
And with a big clean brush i blended the oilpaints together on the seats
I did this straight over the vallejo paints i used to paint the base colors
After this i rechecked some reference photo's and discovered i had to paint the armrests the same way as the seats so i corrected that later

Image
The seats after the oilpaint stage

Image
I then painted some of the details in the hull
The wires and some other parts where painted with vallejo black grey
The small handle in the hull was painted with dark prussian blue and all the metal parts where painted with mr metal color stainless steel

Image
The airtanks for the high pressure starting system where pai ted with the same dark blue

Image
Then i dry brushed the interior part with neutral grey to make the panel edges a bit more visible

Image
I then turned my attention to the ammo for the maingun
The shell is painted with Alclad polished brass
After that i masked the shell and sprayed the tips with Tamiya flat black
The brackets where painted with Vallejo white

Image
Then i painted the detonatortips with mr metal color aluminium

Image
The ammodrums for the mg's where painted with mr metal color dark iron and then buffed them to make them look cleaner (the paint leaves a residue) and to highlight the details

Image
then i painted the dials using green and red from vallejo
I don't know how accurate they are but they where a pain to paint and it looks better then a blank space

And that is all i have for now
I have the engine compartment painted aswell but it would be a very big update if i added that part to this update
So that is for the next time

Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time
Cheers ,Mark

I'm having a hard time grasping the size , any chance you could take a side by side with a 1/35 scale?

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys
So time for another update
This time the painting of the engine compartment and all the stuff that is jammed in that part of the tank
And the few missing bits for the turret as most is just the same as the hull

But first a little size comparrison as requested by the troyster
Image
Image
This is a old Dragon T-34/85 that i have build years ago
The big one is going to be higher though as the wheels and tracks aren't placed yet but the wheels keep falling off untill i glue the fixing pins in place

So on with the painting
Image
I started with the radiators
They where painted black and drybrushed with vallejo gunmetal grey

Image
After that i painted the frame and cover with mr metalcolor aluminium

Image
The engine was painted with Alclad aluminium as a base color for the bare metal parts

Image
The wiring and large tubes where painted in vallejo black
The 2 metal tubes on the front are painted with mr metalcolor aluminium

Image
Then i painted the waterpump in black aswell
The rubber tubing and the pump where then drybrushed with vallejo panzer aces dark rubber

Image
Then i used the mr metalcolor aluminium to paint some small parts to make them look different from the engine block itself

Image
And the air intake manifolds where painted with vallejo neutral grey

Image
The gearbox is painted in the same Alclad aluminium as the the engine

Image
To add a bit of color i painted the startermotor black
The 2 control units and levers are painted in neutral grey

Image
I then drybrushed the black and grey parts with vallejo sky grey
I also repainted the bolts with mr metal color stainless steel to make them look different then the gearbox body
Just to give the idea that they are made from a different metal

Image
Here i buffed the repainted metal parts

Image
The airfliters and tubing for those filters where painted in vallejo neutral grey
I later painted the screws and wingnuts with mr metal color aluminium

Image
Then i painted part that connects the 2 radiators
The rubber tubing is painted black and then dry brushed them with vallejo panzer aces dark rubber
The central part is in neutral grey and all the straps are painted with mr metal color aluminium and the refilling cap is painted with Aqueous H14 orange

Image
The brakes are painted with Alclad aluminium
But because they are drum brakes i painted them in rust colors
I started with dark rust from Ammo

Image
And then i sprayed the dark rust with some shadow rust (also Ammo) to get more color variation

Image
I then painted the axles with mr metal color stainless steel

Image
So with the engine parts done i started with the turret
The seat is painted the same way as the seats in the hull
Other then that it is just white

Image
The periscopes where painted black
Then dry brushed with dark rubber
The glass is basepainted with white and then covered with Aqueous clear green

Image
The radio is painted in neutral grey
Then i painted the switches with white and the centres are painted with mr metal color aluminium
The clear parts have a white base and i covered them with clear orange

Image
The machineguns where sprayed with mr metal color dark iron and then buffed to remove the residue it leaves and show the metal shine
The pistolgrips are painted with leather brown from Vallejo

Image
The bottom of the turret

Image
And the top of the turret

Image
The gunsight was painted white except the headrest and the glass
The glass is painted black and i put a drop of Kristal klear in it to make it look like glass
The headrest is painted just like the seats

Image
The breachblock and sides where the block slides through are painted with mr metal color dark iron for the block and stainless for the sides

Image
I then assembled the engine and gearbox to see if the paint wasn't going to cause problems with the fit

Image
I then painted the hull with hull red from Vallejo
The fueltanks where painted with exta dark green from vallejo

Next are some photo's of the painted and build up hull with all the parts in place
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

And that is all i have for now
I hope you like it so far
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time and happy modelling
Cheers, Mark

That's amazing! Can't really tell which part is the best, but probably I like the engine the most.
I wish I would have enough space for a similar beast! :)

Hi guys
Just a little update for now as there has been some progres but not that much
I said i was going to build a base for it and i probably will but not during this gb
I have way too much fun thinning my stash and i am currently working on a whole bunch of planes that i want to have ready for paint in just a few weeks besides that i don't have the right materials for building a base at the moment so i decided to do that some other time

But for now the progres of the T-34
Image
I chipped the interior with Vallejo modelcolor german camo.black brown
I used it on the exterior too
My prefered method is to apply it with a sponge to get a very fine and random effect and it works much faster then a brush

Image
Image
The exterior chipping that i added
I used it on the hatches and weldline of the roof for the most part but i did add some chipping to other places

Image
And i added the ice cleats

Image
And the spare tracks on the front
Once those where installed i coated the entire model with a coat of Alclad Aqua gloss to protect the paint and prepare it for the decals

Image
And then the decals where added
There are only 6 of them so that take very long

I will add a second coat of the Aqua gloss later today so i can start working on the weathering tomorrow when it is dry
And once that is done i will be back with a new update to show how everything went
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time
Cheers,Mark

Really, really looking great! A base for that "monster" will be a lot of work and will need loads of space, so I understand why you won't do that for the GB! Anyway, I love this build, mate! :) Jens

Thanks Jens
I wasn't planning to make a base that was much bigger then the tank but that already is 20x50 cm so that is about as big of a surface then my old diorama's where
But it won't fit in my display cabinets either and the spot i can put it is not high enough
So i will have to wait with that
For now anyway and i want to put more time in other builds instead of using that time for a base
There is 1 last spot i can put a base for it but that is occupied at the moment by a other diorama but i am clearing out my collection of diorama's and i am not certain if i will keep that one yet

Thank you very much
I have started the weathering already and i made some good progres with that but i wasn't feeling all that well today so i didn't do any modelling
But hopefully i can finish most of it this weekend and i will post a new update once the final steps are finished
Allthough i aam planning to make some stowage
Mainly because you can't buy it anywhere but i think it will add some intrest and life to the tank so i want some stuff for the interior and the exterior
But that will be a seperate update as i haven't done that before so i will need to take my time with that and look at some How To vids before i start trying

Thanks Kevin
It is a pretty nice kit
There is some room for improvement but out of the box it is already nice enough and out of all the 1/16 tanks it is one if the cheapest ,only the Hobby boss T-34 and Tiger are cheaper then the Trumpeter T-34's but the Hobby biss kits are just the outer shell and don't have a interior like this one
The other Trumpy kits aren't exactly what you can call cheap but they still beat the insanely expensive Tamiya kits in this scale

Seriously good looking monster you have there. I saw a few 1/16 boys at the Cosford show last week. Frikkin HUGE they were.

Great work
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Thanks
They are big for sure
The T--34 is one of the smaller tanks in this scale ,at a show i visited a few weeks back they had the new Trumpeter Jagdtiger in this scale
It was only a unpainted showpiece but it was a lot bigger then this one

Hi guys
So time for the final update
As you may have seen already thid build is finished and has a thread in the reveal section
So for this update i will show what i have done for the weathering and then this build is officially finished

Image
After the chipping of the interior and exterior with a sponge i focussed on the engine
I started out with Mig prod. dark wash

Image
After that i used AK engine grime to make it look dirty

Image
To finish them i used AK engine oil
I made some spots with the oil and then used thinner to make them bigger and more transparent
After that i applied a second set of spots
The thinner ones look like older spills while the thicker and darker ones look like newer spills

Image
And once the engine was dirty i placed the exhaust manifolds
They where painted the same way as i did for the exterior and then dusted with some Mig prod. old and standard rust pigments

Image
I then used the engine grime again but now to make the entire engine bay look dirty

Image
As you can see here it worked very nice on the white bulkhead but the red and green parts hardly show it
So i will get back to that once i start with the oil paints

Image
To give the exterior a wash i used AK track wash wich is a pretty dark brown color

Image
After the wash i applied some streaking effects
I used the AK streaking for dark yellow vehicles for this
This again is a fairly dark brown so it will show on the green

Image
Here you can see the result after i made them finer by stretching them with a flat brush and thinner
Keep in mind to only use a moist brush and not soaked or you will remove them in a single stroke with the brush

Image
After the wash and streaking i gave the entite model a coat of AK ultra matte varnish
This protects the previous work and gives a good surface for the oilpaint
To get more colorvariation i used a pale yellow on the sponsons and the rest of the interior

Image
Near the running gear i used a dark olive green and a light green

Image
And for the upper hull and turret i used 2 shades of yellow

Image
With a moist brush i started to spread the oils

Image
It will take a few times but after a while the layer becomes very thin and changes the color that is underneath it

Image
On the interior it worked pretty good

Image
On the exterior the result was less to my liking

Image
So i decided to add a second layer of green

Image
It didn't look that pale anymore but i still think it is too light

Image
So i applied a 3rd layer of oilpaints
This time i only used the fairly dark olive green
I didn't cover everything so i still have some faded areas but after this color i am happy with the result

Image
Then it was time for the final assembly
All the big and small subassemblies can be glued now with the exception of the upper and lower hull and the upper and lower turret parts

Image
The gunners seat and scope where glued in

Image
Some ammo for the coaxial mg and some rounds for the main gun where installed

Image
The 12 round storage was filled and the protection plate behing them was placed
If you build this kit i would advise you to cut the locating pins from the ammo storage before you assemble it
They don't fit and i had to cut them off at the last minute wich wasn't easy

Image
The crew compartment was put together

Image
And the engine compartment was put together
The bulkhead with the airfilters is not glued in place yet as i still need to add the pigments to the exhausts that are mounted on there
But everything else is glued down

Image
After the final assembly i repainted the slogans and unit markings
Because of all the oilpaints they turned green so that had to be fixed
Just so i didn't get a bright white i mixed up some Vallejo ivory and white and used that

Image
I then added the rust pigments to the exhausts
The hull and turret are now ready for the pigments and final steps as all the work that is left will be on the exterior

Image
Then it was time for the tracks
I sprayed them with Tamiya flat black and then drybrushed them with Vallejo gunmetal grey

Image
To finish the tracks i applied some pigments
I used mig productions rubble dust
I picked this one because i want to make a base for this later and my idea is a urban setting so a destroyed building and things of that nature
So this color will suit that

Image
I then started with the oil spills and other weathering on the exterior
I first placed some spots with AK engine oil
I add this around the turret ring aswell
In the turretring you would find oil or grease aswell
Just the weight of the turret is enough to force any excess grease or oil out of the bearing and it would spill on to the flat surface of the upper hull

Image
To add some depth to the oilspills i thinned down the first layer
Then i added some drops of the oil on it and i left them as they where

Image
The same was done with the fuel spills from the shot up fueltanks
I didn't add a realistic amount because that would mean i need a sea of fuel on the fender and i doubt that would look nice

Image
To finish the spare tracks i usdd a sponge and some vallejo black to make a chipped finish on them
It was common that spare tracks where painted in a thick black paint
But this would chip once the crew started to use them as steps to get on the vehicle

Image
With a big graphite pencil i added some bare metal effects on the edges of some panels and hatches

Image
To add some color to the dust i decided to use diffent colors on the hull
The colors i used are by Mig prod. and i used european dust and dry mud
The first layer is the darkest one
So i made some random spots with the european dust

Image
With the help of a big soft brush i blended the dust to make it look softer

Image
This was repeated with the dry mud pigments

Image
The wheels where given some brick dust pigments just like the tracks

Image
The same pigments where used on the tank
I used a bit more on the flat surfaces and a bit less on the vertical
The towcables where painted with gunmetal grey and then covered with mig prod. Standard rust wash
This will settle in the details and give you a rusty look

Image
To finish it up i added some rust pigments on the exhausts and some soot stains on the hull

Image
And all that was left to do was take the reveal pictures and call it done

And that concludes this build
I hope ypu like it
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time
Cheers,Mark

Thank you very much Kev
I would say :just give it a try
You have a lot of control over the oilpaints
Those made the biggest difference with this build and how it looks
And you can do the same i did with my first attemps
I used a gloss and a satin varnish for my first tries
The oilpaint has less grip on those finishes so if you don't like it you can still remove it without that much effort
The only real mistake i think i made was that i forgot that the flat finish of the ultra matte varnish makes it look a bit paler then it did already
That is why i had to do 3 layer or applications with the oilpaints
Other then that it was a fairly smooth build but kits in this scale can be mojo killers
There is barely anything you can do in a few minutes like you would with smaller scales
Most things on it take up quite some time and materials
I used over 2 bottles of Aqueous paints
1/2 a bottle of flat white
2 bottles of rust colors from Mig
3 knife blades
And so on
And that is really something to think about when you start a large kit like this one

But when you build it it still is good fun
