Late Entry Revell Sukhoi T-50

Post by fire4effect »

So I am late to the party but my entry willbe the Revell Sukhoi T50. its the 1:72 scale kit with after market resin cockpit and wheels with after market decals. First time in a GB and first time using after market and resin so be gentle folks, today is the day I start so here are some pics and background information to kick things off.

In August 2011 a pure stealth Fighter-Bomber for the russian armed forces was displayed for the first time at the Russian International Air Show (MAKS) at Zhukovsky near Moscow. The fact that this aircraft has a certain similarity to the American F22 Raptor is to a large extent due to the demands of Stealth technology. By todays standards, the T50 occupies a place in the same class as the American F35 Lightning II. As the F22 is in all respects inferior to bothe aircraft, it is now regarded as obsolete. Similar to the F35, the T50 is also fitted with electronically controlled vector jets, which guarantee excellent manoeuvrability and outstanding handling characteristics in all speed ranges. Another advantage over the western aircraft is its two engines, which dramatically improves its survivability. Whilst the USA was trying to achieve stealth characteristics using special design features, the T50 had achieved up to 85% stealth success through the use of special nano technology materials on the outer surfaces which also dramatically reduced wind resistance. In order to fully utilise its stealth characteristics all of the T50`s weapons are housed in a weapons bay within the fuselage. The T50 is the only stealth aircraft that can use its internally mounted weapons at speeds above Mach 1. Additionally, however, it also has the ability to carry long and short range air combat missiles and larger anti-ship missiles on external weapons stations under the wings.
As well as a top speed of over 2000km/h (1250mph) great emphasis was put on its low speed flight characteristics. To this end the aircraft has a series of electronically controlled slats over the entire width of the wing in addition to its vector nozzles. The planned mass production of initially 1000 T50`s by 2016 is a jopint venture between the Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi and and the Indian company Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL). Whilst the Russian Air Force has placed orders for 400 to 450 single seater PAK FA versions of the aircraft, India will get 250 FGFA PAH, the two seat version. Other T50 customers currectly include China, Iran, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Malaysia.

Cool! I've not seen one of these built. Keen to see how you find the kit.

So time for an update on the build so far.....

First order of the day was to to get the resin cockpit built and painted, the first time using resin and I am a definate convert, I sourced pics of the cockpit on the internet and this is how i got on, for my first resin "tub" I am pleased with the results

Next up was the priming of the fuselage halves, I am a complete airbrush novice but ordered some badger primer (before Ultimate released theirs!!) after some test sprays I found the about 20 PSi through my Iwata Neo worked well and here are the results.

Image

next the instructions called for the intakes and exhausts to be fitted

Image

The `Tub was then glued in place to the top half of the fuselage and the two halfs glued together, not a bad fit at all and no filler required but lots of clamps, the resin saftermarket was a less than perfect fit and required som modification to the front wheel well

Once i was happy with the fit of the fuselage it was time to spray the first coat of white, Masked with tamiya tape and using vallejo model air white at 22 PSI through the Neo and this was the result

Image

White then masked and the light grey sprayed again at 22 PSi, this was Vallejo Model Air Light Grey

Image

Image

More masking to get the dark grey camo down, took an age but thank god they are straight lines!!!

And the results so far....

Really enjoying this build and using it as a bit of a learing experirnce with the airbrush techniques. Watch this space as the end is now in sight.....well sort of....
