I didn't think putting them wooden shingles on the roof would be that much work! It's not finished yet and I ruined the base colour in some areas, but that's not too bad. I'll do the rest this evening and touch up the paint job. And I finally glued one wall section, the floor and the toilet together. Working on a Sunday!

Not exactly next door, but whenever my girlfriend is spending a day at her mom's she sneaks into the McDonald's there and steals as many stirrers as possible. She takes them from the rich and gives them to the poor! "Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen..."

I finished the paint job on the roof and I like it very much. One last coat of flat clear and that's it!

I'll explain exactly what I did in my next update video. Yesterday I had too much time to look at the roof and my silly brain came up with one of its "great" ideas. "You'll have to build gutters and at least one drain pipe, man!" I obeyed and took one of those aluminum buckets for tea lights. I shaped it over a thin paint brush handle, punched a 4 mm hole into one end, added a piece of a plastic straw and closed the ends with matching pieces of that aluminum foil.

Okay, it had to be done, 'cause even a small building like this usually has gutters and drain pipes. I'll have the shithouse finished over the weekend and maybe even most of the factory wall. Then it's about time for the dio base and the final painting of the figures. Some smaller stuff like oil drums, jerry cans and wheels need to be painted, too. Only three weeks left and I'm running out of time while my brain can't stop making plans for this dio! Am I going crazy? Yes, siree!

Some pics of the accessories that I'll place on the dio. Most of them aren't finished yet. I hate curing/drying times!
You saw the bench several times before, but now I've added the tools (those which survived the paint job and being removed from the yellow tack I used!!!) and a piece of tube for the vice.
The street sign is made from a short piece of a Q-Tip, a longer one of 2mm plastic tube, a tiny piece of .5mm plastic sheet and strong aluminum foil. The sign itself was designed on my computer as was the sign for the house number.
The spring coil comes from a ball pen and somehow I came up with the idea of fixing it to my hand vice with a nail. That made painting it really simple!

There's a good chance now I'll be able to finish in time! Who'd have thought? Take care, be good and keep on modeling!

beautiful work as always Jens, i so look forward to your updates and im especially looking forward to the pic that places it all together. When you do post it as complete i think you definitely need to post pics of the individual items so they dont get lost in the awesomeness of it all. i know it will be a picture that will take away hours of our lives just absorbing it all like a true piece of art.

Just throwing in some claps and bows as i haven't seen any given for a while.... and boy, does this EPIC BUILD deserve some.....

Jens you are putting us all to shame here, your use of ordinary bits and bobs puts even my scrap scratchbuilding to shame.... and i have turned some old recycled bits into usable items over the past few years... lol...
Its the card and photo paper walls and buildings i enjoy the most.... and the weathering.... all by brush..... all everyday items... No magic powders or washes or airbrushing..... Nope just Jens.... Bravo mate.....
Gonna nip down the bookies and place my bet soon...... Can you guess who my moneys on? lol...
Seriously though, this has, to date, been a most excellent thread to have followed... Long may it continue....
... But not too long as we need you to finish and reveal this masterpiece before the months out...

Thank you very much, Andy. Maybe I would use all these modern things (pigments, Vallejo, MIG and blahblah stuff), if I had them and knew how to handle them, hehehe! I do know how to handle my trusty oils and pastel chalks and I learned everything from (Francois Verlinden) books. Just adapted the techniques to my style. Nobody ever heard of the internet when I started and maybe I'm just one of those old dogs you can't teach new tricks anymore. And I just don't want to buy stuff for convenience. That's not my way of modeling.

The use of everyday items is something I learned early, not (only) because of money but because of availability. Everything I use is somewhere in or around the house. I like doing it that way. Gives me more room for being creative. Whom do I tell? You're doing this yourself.

I think I will finish in time. I'd be done with it if I had an airbrush. Painting by brush takes time. Don't put your money on me, Andy! There are around 120 builds in this GB and there are many, many very good ones that deserve one of the three prizes. But thanks again, mate. Much appreciated.

I put everything together (except for the figures/accessories) for a layout. That's not for me. because I know what it'll look like. Just wanted to give you a general impression. I'm really sorry for the poor quality. I wanted to take the pics out in the garden, but it's too windy. I chose the best of the bad photos, ahem. There'll be seven figures plus all the accessories I showed yesterday plus the interior for the buildings to add life to the scene. The complete groundwork will be cobblestone. Now I'm going back to work.

Not only is this gonna be EPIC.... It's gonna be a full 360' experience diorama with something for everybody to enjoy.. Your gonna need to set it on a turntable but I reckon it's going to be too big to rotate... Lol... Continued success Jens.... Awesome stuff mate.. :0)

I think my comment sums up the greatness of a fully immersive dio... Would be good if it did rotate though..

More progress on the wash room. I built a wash basin, added the partion and build a window (which is just primed on these pics). And I built the gutter for the damaged side of the building and added the mounting for both sides. Hope to get the build of this thing done by Sunday, so I can start painting the exterior. I'll have to put some debris into the wash room, but not too much. I want to do it in a way to make it look like it's been used AFTER it's been damaged. So it must be done like somebody cleaned it roughly. Ah, yes! I built the door that comes between the two wall segments.

As you can imagine I'm really busy! At the moment the biggest part of the groundwork is set aside to cure. I assembled the wash room walls. The most difficult job was to fill the joint on the right corner next to the entrance. Well, I wanted to do the edges again anyway, so that was okay. I used FIMO air drying modeling clay, an old stubby paintbrush and the tip of a screw driver to do the brick shapes. Thanks to Michael Coen I learned that the best way to add FIMO (DAS or anything alike) is with a thin layer of PVA glue underneath. It helped a lot! Cheers, Michael!

The building got its base colours and some dry brushing on the upper portion. It looks quite colourful right now and it will even more after picking out single stones and bricks. Then I'll give the wash room a clear coat and do the weathering the way I did it with the factory wall.

I built a door and a window for the wash room. The window is already in place. The door will be leaning against a wall. It's made of .5 mm plastic sheet, a piece of veneer, a piece from the lid of a dog food can and some .6 mm copper wire.

The second segment of the factory wall is almost done. I wrote three Russian slogans onto the wall ("Victory is ours", "For the motherland! For Stalin!" and "Down with fascism!"). Only need to paint the fence part and then I'll apply some pastel for the last part of weathering.

I also wanted to show you the progress on my figures, but that'll have to wait till the weekend. Enough time left to get the dio done, but I'll need all of it! Take care, be good and keep on modeling!

The discoloration of the bricks is really missing yet. Can't wait to see it completed!

Maybe some dark wash or lighter color drybrush on the bricks of the broken wall, some residue of the bound material (mortar?), I think there are some more details waiting for getting revealed there.

Thanks a lot, guys! Just painted some of the stones and bricks in different colours last night. Different reds, browns and greys. Even some in blue. This morning I painted the complete exterior with a clear coat and now gave the building a dark oil wash. The base is sprayed black and will get a greyish coat which I'll do in a sort of cloudy manner. No time to take pics of that now, but I'll show more of it tomorrow. Take care.

Since I haven't got an airbrush, the whole process of weathering is somewhat different. I always start with a colour that's the darkest nuance of the colour I want to achieve, which means it's actually TOO dark. I lighten it up with many passes of dry brushing. After the first, sometimes second pass I use a dark or medium dark oil wash. I mix them myself. I never buy any readily mixed stuff like AK or Ultimate or whatever. If I do the paint job on an American vehicle I use one of three base colours: Tamiya olive drab, khaki drab or dark green and modulate them with my method towards olive green. The results look olive green but have tonal variations. I'll build a US tank later this year. Maybe it's easier to explain it along with some photos. Or I'll try to explain how I did it in the last update vid before the final reveal.

Back to this task. The assembly of the washroom is finished. The paint job is 90% done. Some oils and pastels are still missing, but that's part of tonight's or tomorrow's work. The left gutter is in place now but isn't on the pics. The signs were designed on my computer. There won't be much debris inside the building, 'cause it's been used after it was damaged. I'll add a shovel and a broom to make that clear. Most debris will be stacked outside the house. When the paint job's complete a last coat of flat clear will be applied. The base is 75% finished, but I haven't found a way yet to take pictures of the complete thing. It is quite huge!

This is coming to an end soon and I must say I'm glad when it's done. Almost four months in this build now, not touching any other project. It's about time to finish this. Take care, be good and keep on modeling.

Jens PS.: I wrote the graffiti with a white acrylic paint pen. The brand's name is "Molotow", hahaha.

Thanks for the detailed explanation on your painting style. im trying to modulate more on edges that would catch the light but hadnt thought about doing on larger panels. I'm going to have to try a vehicle as ive a nice fuel tanker i want to do for a diorama with a mustang in the future.

I totally understand how you feel about getting it finished, i was like that a few days ago and had to fight the urge to rush the end. But im glad im done now. going to take a break for a few weeks from the bench and think about the next GB - Pacific theatre.... So tempted to do a section of the big E...hmm 4mths - reckon that would be way to short. plus i need a few years modeling under me belt to do something like that justice.

Thanks a lot, Alan! The beauty of this hobby - IMO - is that you never stop learning. New techniques, recycling stuff or put it to a different use and so on. I'm doing this since 1981 plus two years of 1/72 aircraft from 1976 till 1978 and quite often I've got the feeling that I don't know sh*t about it. Then I take a break of two or three years, start again and come up with things I never did before, just because I thought of them during my hiatus. And they work most of the time. I find that most amazing and that's why I'll never really quit. And the biggest PLUS today is the internet. The exchange of ideas with fellow modelers without being member in a model club, hehehe.

The groundwork's done! Today I'll glue down the factory and the wash room and at least one part of the wall. Damn, I thought I had a shovel somewhere, but I couldn't find one. Well, since I had to build a broom from scratch, why not building a shovel, too? I still have got plenty of time, haven't I? Argh!!!

Anyway, if you want to make cobblestone or stone walls yourself, I highly recommend drywall mud. It was my first attempt with that material and it's so nice and easy to work with. It's a bit porous, but you can scratch it, score it, scribe it, sand it smooth - just great!

Roadwork look superb Jens..... Then you spoil us and scratch build a Broom and a Shovel too!....

Hope the construction and placing of parts is going to plan... Gonna be a knock out display!

. I've got plenty of stones to scribe on my church when I get round to it, one reason why I've put it off. Tedius job but it's well worth the effort. Keep up the good work looking forward to the final reveal

Thanks a lot, Andy! I'm so sorry for the broom and shovel, but I had to do them. I needed an explanation why the wash room floor is rather tidy and I think these two tools make it clear. I installed the wash room and now I do the "mountains" of debris on the outside.

I started with more debris in the workshop. I'm damn busy, but I'm sure I'll have the final reveal up on Friday night. That's still early enough. isn't it? Continued success to you as well, my friend!

Thank you so much, Simon! I guess there's a difference between doing a cobblestone street and a church/any building, especially in a much smaller scale. You'll need currently recharged mojo to get started. But once you did start, it's almost impossible to stop before it's done. I'm looking forward to the final reveal, too, 'cause that means my dio is done - except for that placard column, but it was clear I couldn't do that for the GB. Just found it too late on the internet. Friday night is the time I'll upload my final reveal.
