I have a questions is there a smart way to apply tiny small Decals. I'm having a hard time with it and google did not come up with a tip.
So if anyone has a hint for me, it would be appreciated
In small I'm presuming aircraft stencils, instrument dials, (rank) insignia's is what we are talking about here.
The first tip I have is to not soak the decal in the decal water solution (water and white vinegar) for to long. This will release the decal from its backing paper and will cause mayor headaches. For small decals I use the 5 second rule in lukewarm water. After the decal has been submerged for this time remove it from the water, and set it aside for the water to dwell into the backing paper completely. There are also nifty tools on the market like the Trumpeter Decal Tray that could be a help in keeping it all organised.
Talking about tools because we are dealing with very small decals that have only minimal adhesion from themselves good decal setting and softening solutions are a must I have three favorites: Decal Set, Decal Sol and Solvaset. The first two are by Microscale Industries, the later by Walthers. Each of these have it own application. Decal Set is a decal adhesive and and prepares the surface of the model to prevent "silvering". The other two are decal softening agents that will make the decal conform to the the surface and give a painted on look the the decals. The Walthers Solvaset is a more potent version of Microscale Sol and is used on thicker more stubborn decals.
For the actual placing and positioning of the decals I use a pair of good tweezers and small brushes. To removed any excess decal water and setting solution I use "Q-tips" / "Cotton buds" do make sure the are slightly moist other wise you stand the risk of removing the decal when trying to apply it.
There are several good How To's on YouTube which I recommend you to watch.
As always happy modeling and keep sticking Styrene
