Porsche 917k

Post by Tay99 »

Hi, new to all this so I thought I would dip my toe in.

I am going to build the Porsche 917 from the Steve McQueen flim le mans.
Here are a few shot of the kit and aftermarket goodies. Might try and get a racing figure later and build a small dio.

Thanks for looking.

Thank you everyone for leaving kind comments.
I have now made a start on the brakes, I am using a aftermarket set from Renaissance models. PE discs which are in three pieces and resin callipers, hubs and cooling duct, the resin needed quite a lot of cleaning up not to impressed to be truthful.

Image

Image

Primed with Alclad. The hubs wherethen spryed with Alclad Duraluminum.
Image

Image

I then added some PE bolts to the hubs.
Image

Image

Image

Made a start on the bodywork by spray with Hiroboy white Primer.
Image

Image.

I have a Steve McQueen and garage figures on order so when they turn up I can decide how I am going to build the Dio.

Thanks again for taking the time to look and leave a comment.

Thank you for the comments. Another quick update I have sprayed the body with zero paints Gulf blue.

Image

Made a start on the interior added some PE to the dashboard and stirring wheel.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

With the resin brakes there was also some resin parts for the brake cylinders in the kit there is no reservoirs so decided to try and make some,
i have seen this done on anther build, I used a straight piece of clear spur in the drimel and with a exto blade carved the shape of the bottle.

Image

while in the drimel drilled a hole for some clear yellow

Image

Then for the lid i used a piece off of a spur might sand it smaller later
Image

Finished part, a lot of trial and error carving the clear part :wall:

Image

And a pic of it in place on the brake cylinder, will add a metal band later.

Image

Thanks for looking.

Some nice scratchwork going on here :
Yes, pe is great, but it's much nicer making your own details. Somehow more satisfying (me think). :shhh:

I agree, and often less finicky scratch building....lots of PE is a B to fit properly and instructions are poor
But I cannot duplicate etched logos and fine details as well as the PE can

Hi thanks for the kind words.

Another update finished the wheels, sprayed the logo on the tyres with the template that came with the PE set aand added a PE part for the wheel nuts.

Image

Image

Made a start on the cockpit, I tried to get a texture on the seats by spraying Tamiya flat red letting it try and then spraying again from a distance so the paint is dry by the time it hits the seat, also added some textured foil for the foot well.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Quick mock-up to see how things fit.

Image

Made a start on the front shocks the kit part is not to special, so i cut the middle out and used a small brass rod and some wire rapped around a tooth pick to make the springs and then glued them back together.

Image

Image

Image

Made a start on wiring the engine 12 plugs per side.

Image

Thanks for looking any advise greatly welcomed.

PE pedals made up and painted

Fuel tank from the resin kit primed and test fitted.

Finished fitting the spark plug wires, need to touch up the distributors, next up are the fuel lines.

Image

here you can see the fuel tank which was painted with alclad aluminium and the oil tanks
also painted the drive shafts and couplings

Image

Image

Some garage figures for the dio. Primed and painted in gulf colours just waiting for some paint to do the faces, I will see
how they come out before I start the Steve McQueen figure.

You done some fabulous work
The body, colours and decals looking a dream
Nice job on the engine and wiring

I had looked at the full mfh kit of this. At £500 and 1/12 it's a monster build kit.
Will keep my eye out for this kit in sale in the future
