Tamiya 1/48 Chance Vought F4U-1/2 Birdcage Corsair

Post by Willem »

Right. Turned the man cave upside down looking for a tiny spool of Ushi rigging line, when I find it I may edit these picks with an R/T aerial attached but, for now I'm calling this done as I need to get a P-38 finished by the end of this month. I have a Hasegawa Zero in the stash so I may put that into this GB later in the Summer too.

"White 20" flown by 1st Lt Foy "Poncho" Garison, VMF-213, Guadalcanal June/July 1943.

Tried a few new things on this build:
Post-shading and no pre-shading (although, in my mind, the process is fairly similar).
Sanded back the decals to distress them slightly.
Oil dot filter (Well, first time I got it to work).
Put a Geezer in the cockpit (haven't done that in ages and fancy doing it again with the aircraft in flight).

A few things I might have done differently, primarily the cockpit cut outs on the turtle-deck as I think they should be the same colour as the fuselage. The tail number does not match the aircraft as I had a decal problem during the build and managed to remove nearly all but the tail numbers. And I've just noticed that I've not painted the nav light on the fuselage spine but, as I've typed all of this and I'm currently 70 miles from the model, that can wait.

As always, great to take part in these group builds here on ISM and here's to many more.

Thanks for looking.

:cheers2:

It looks amazing, Willem. Extra kudos for all the experimentation, that takes some courage :) The effects on the decals and the shading and filters, it looks fantastic.

Inspirational build.

Some real top notch work here - just fantastic looking, the slight weathering you put in areas (such as those front areas around the decal on the top side of the wing) really make this model.

Many many thanks for all the comments guys. I am really chuffed with how she turned out. Some things worked for me that have so far eluded my skill levels. (It does help to have a kit that, nearly, falls together). She is not perfect and I like that. But this is a good step along the road to what I want to achieve.

I can sit back and watch all of the cool builds in this GB come to fruition........... Although there is a Hasegawa Zero that keeps catching my eye.

Need to finish a P-38 first.

Once again, a great pleasure to build along with such amazing modelers.

The Corsair looks absolutely fantastic Will :th: :thumb2: :th: I really like the distressed look you gave the decals, I'll have to remember that trick for one of my next builds.
