Let's do a Gundam/Robot Group Build!

Post by Lysus »

Hey out there, winter is coming up soon and it’s time to run ourselves ragged with family for a few weeks, then settle into thick sweaters and wait for spring with our hobby. I was wondering if there might be any of you out there who would be interested in building some robuts.

Image

Obviously in terms of appeal this would not probably be as big a draw as the Summer Sci-fi, but I thought I’d check in with you all regardless.

What I’m proposing:

- A non-ISM group or buddy build to run from December 21st to March 21st
- Build any plastic or resin Gundam kit
- Or any robot kit with ties to Japan (a.k.a. “mecha”); examples include (but not limited to):

-- Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K)
-- Armored Core
-- Zoids (got two of these in the stash--including the one pictured above--and I think if I don’t build one soon I’ll explode)
-- Muv-Luv
-- Macross (but it needs to have legs, no jet modes!)
-- Frame Arms
-- Mechatro

- A door prize to be determined by participation levels (see below)

Basically it needs to have legs and arms; or arms and treads, or legs and cannons, you get the idea.

Image

A Prize?

I’m not currently considering judging for this one, but maybe a door prize instead. Something like if we have 20+ entries with 10+ finishers I’ll just let an online generator pick a number at random and bam, prize. If anyone wants to add to the pot, great! If not that’s cool, too; my stash runneth over and I’m all too happy to share a little. Let’s keep this one low key. Cinnamon tea and scones. Whiskey and yule logs. Comfortable wintery goodness. Here's how I'm thinking I'd do it:

If we get 10 finishes, I'll give a random winner (chosen by a random number generator) a Bandai Action Base of their choice (there's two sizes, one for 1/144, one for 1/100).

If we get 20 finishes, I'll award an entire HG or RG kit out of my swollen stash.

Enter a build as often as you like, but only reveals qualify.

Sound good? Let me know--and again if anyone wants to add to either pot, feel free but you're under no obligation.

-----

As for Gundam kits, really anything is allowed, but just keep in mind we’re talking about three months here, so maybe that Perfect Grade isn’t the right choice unless you’ve got the time. Super deformed (the little cute ones, like egg planes but for robots), High Grade, Master Grade, whatever. Just go for it! Out of box, painted, unpainted, custom painted, it’s all fair game. Just build it however you like and share it with the forum.

And sure, I could humiliate myself again with another video reveal at the end if there's enough participation ;)

Once again I can’t have only one option for poll, so if you’re not interested you could mark the “no” box but it isn’t necessary unless you’re just curious to see the results.

As with last time, if you’ve never done one of these before, please consider trying one. You’d be surprised—I think—at how much fun you could have. The High Grades are inexpensive (as little as $10 USD for some), build up in an hour or two, and you can paint if you like, and in any manner you like. They make fantastic mojo helpers given you can start and finish a kit in a single sitting if you really want to.

Image

Our place on the forum will be determined by participation, so the more interest we can show before the poll completes the better. I'll be happy whether it's a buddy build or a fancy sub-forum GB, but let's go for broke, eh? (You can change your vote at any time)

If you have any questions, comments, or requests, ask below and we'll discuss it. If you've never built one but want to try, go ahead and check out the guide I wrote (and still need to finish!) or just ask me in the comments for some build suggestions:

Ok, now I have to decide between the 'normal' one and the Origin.

I bought a Gundam kit at a comic con this summer. This would be a good excuse to finally build it. I know nothing about Gundam but my boys loved it when we saw the http://www.japan-cool.co.uk stand so I bought one to try. I got this one

That's possible. Went with three months because it was Winter and I just did a Summer SiG--just symmetry and no other good reason. If I can get more on board then I'll consider adding another month to make it four :th:

Darn right it would. And oh hey, it's an Astaroth!

Maybe you can do the Origin version, then ;) Personally I really like the IBO Astaroth (both of them) quite a bit, so if there's two or twenty I'm all for it!

What about a games workshop eldar wraith knight, not quite a robot as it is piloted by the souls of dead eldar but a damn cool model.
John, whats on my bench? Usually a mess and a couple of different models a week.

That's an HGUC Geara Zulu (Guards Type). There's also a normal soldier type with some minor cosmetic differences and weapons.

I hadn't considered it too much, though I did say Gundam SLASH robot as a way to hedge my proposal ;)

Mark "yes" for now and if you're new to this thread but wondering about this, too, go ahead and also mark yes but leave a comment here saying what robot you want to do so I can see how big the demand is. Cool?

Nice, that's an older HG kit, but it's one of the best of the early batch. Simple but detailed, I think you'll like it!

Yikes! That's a wicked beastie...I'm leaning towards opening it up a little so long as we're still talking robots. Just got back into town and it's late, but I'll work on it ;)

I think it's worth a go for anyone who wants to, they're pretty fun and can provide a nice break from the norm. And yeah, I too have a full bench at the mo...so we're in the same boat there. Oh, see below about a suggestion.

They're seriously both pretty awesome looking. The sword/mace on the Origin version looks wicked.

Yeah, the Iron Blooded Orphan kits are $10-20 USD (most around $12-14) and are pretty good value for the money if you just want to try one out. Here's a link for HLJ so you can just have a peek at them: IBO kits

They're also one of the newer lines so they're pretty easy to find in shops or on say Amazon or something and not stupidly marked up in price.

I'd also suggest anything from the HG lines, these can vary from $12 to $40 but there's tons of good stuff for $20 or less. And they're always adding new kits to this line so they're also easy to get a hold of and cover a wide range of designs.

I'd be interested if my wallet allows. But that's the big question ATM, being a poor student and all. Put me down for a solid "maybe" cos I do wanna get back into Zoids again. I liked them when I was younger but kinda forgot they existed.

The new kits are pretty amazing looking (though I have yet to build either one in my stash). They can be on the pricey side, though. The cheapest I can find are the Shadow Fox (which is one of the two I have and it looks awesome) and the Lightning Saix. After that they start climbing up into the $50 USD + range pretty fast.

Otherwise for Gunpla there's loads to get for under $20 USD. If you're in NZ maybe give MindFenix Hobbies a look and compare to something like what you'd find on Amazon or in a shop.

Post by Lysus »

A little update and a request for input if anyone has any...

So we're off to a good start here! I was hoping for some input on a couple points before I have to make a unilateral decision:

I do think we could open it up to ANY mech/robot so long as it has some combination of arms and legs. So this would include Warhammer stuff or an Imperial Walker, for example. Thoughts? Objections?

I know Lee meant it in jest to add one more month (as he never finishes...yeah, I said it! Prove me wrong, Lee! Prove me wrong!*) but maybe we could make it a 4 month GB to allow for some more complex submissions. Master Grade and Perfect Grade builds can take a looooong time if you have like, you know, a job. I'm open to it; again, thoughts? Objections?

In terms of a prize, here's what I'm considering as of today:

If there's 10 finishers, I'll give a randomly chosen winner an action base of their choosing (two sizes available) -- the same as originally proposed.

If there's 20 finishers, I'll give a randomly chosen winner this kit:

Image

It's a 1/144 HGUC kit from my stash; it's #194 in the HG line and relatively new AND it's a Revive so it features all new tooling. It's a peach, I tells ya. This is also as originally proposed.

Here's what I'm currently wondering about and would appreciate some input:

IF we get to 20 finishes, should we:

a) Draw for the kit ONLY
b) Draw for the kit AND the stand for ONE winner
c) Draw twice; once for the stand, once for the kit (for two winners)

As for what happens if we get over 20 finishes, well I'm not expecting that many, but if we do I'm considering either upgrading the kit to the Real Grade version of this Gundam Mk II OR adding a 1/100 kit to the pot. Something like an IBO Graze Kai or the new MG GM Sniper II. I dunno...I guess I need to see what the turn out will be over the next couple weeks.

Anyway, if any of you have thoughts about this, please do let me know here before the time runs out. In the mean time, go tell your friends if you think they'd be interested to come and sign up (for the GB and/or the forum) and let's get those votes in!

Thanks, dudes and dudettes.

* I kid, I know you're a busy guy, Lee. :cheers2:

I have no objections to opening this up to any Mecha inc Warhammer.

Also have no objections to an extra month (im a slow builder)

Me being biased if we get 20+ finishers id love a 1/100 kit as a prize as i only build these or higher i dont bother with RG/HG

For the draw id choose C - draw twice

Just need this to hurry up now its killing me having to wait to start my RE1/100 Efreet lol

Same, I barely gave it a thought when I first saw it, but the more I see the more I want it.

20! That's the HGUC Mk II locked in. Assuming that translates into 20 finishes, of course ;)

If we get to 30 I'll work on bumping that up to a 1/100 kit of some kind.

Hi guys I've lurked on ISM for years but I thought I'd actually go in for this GB. sounds like it will be fun. My 2p I think it should be open to as many mech and robot types, like warhammer etc. Going on till April would be cool to. Lots of time to get something finished.
There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.

Glad we could draw you out from the shadows. I agree, I think April is sounding best so far.
