Tamiya 1/72 Mikoyan Mig-29 Fulcrum

Post by ThatParkaGuy99 »

Hi!

I started this build ages ago but got sidetracked and forgot about it, and have recently come back and finished it. I'm not super happy with it, especially the underside (which was damaged when my brother spilled the thinner i was using all over my bench :wall: ), but i will most likely make a base plate/mini diorama for it to help hide the damage.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks

Sometimes it feels good to just finish an old project. I like the ideas you have in this build a lot. Especially the camo scheme. Russian jets are so cool!! have one question. What kind of paint did you use? Did you use enamels or acrylics? For example, if you used Tamiya and you aren't happy with something you can drop a part in some windex and the paint comes right off and you can paint it again no worries and it won't attack the plastic either. I often recommend that to beginning modeler's because it takes the stress of worrying about mistakes out of the build. Mistakes happen to everyone from time to time. When I was building my first Wingnut Wings project I accidentally painted the horizontal stabilizer upside down. But because my colors were Tamiya I was able to use the windex trick and it worked like magic. Either way, I like this build and I hope to see more of your work in the future.

Thanks for the tip Matt!
I do use tamiya acrylics as they are readily available near me and are easy to use, so I will be sure to try the windex trick in the future.

Thanks again!

Just one note. It only works with alcohol or it's derivative based acrylics like Tamiya. It won't work with lacquer based like Mr. Color. I use both. But what's cool is if you prime with mr. Surfacer and pre shade with mr. color, if you make a mistake with the base coat in Tamiya when you remove it it will leave your primer and pre shade behind. That's what happened when I repainted the Horizontal stabilizer. Big time saver. Lacquer thinner however cuts through both. So if you attempt to remove your base coat with lacquer thinner it will attack everything.

Unlucky about the thinners, but still, it´s a very nice build. I think the weathered look compliments the character of your Mig. :thumb2:

Dirty Mig! Nice job, don't worry about the thinners, we all have disasters so kudos to you for finishing and posting.
Regards, Dave.

Thanks for the awesome feedback and comments guys! :)

Just as a bit of an update, because of how bad the bottom of the aircraft ended up looking, I have created a simple diorama base to sit it on. Its not a very complex base, just a simple taxiway design, but I think it makes the model look a lot better, especially since the bottom is hidden hahaha....
