Scratch building FOD covers for a F/a-18c

Afternoon everyone,

After some advice on where to start with scratch building some fod covers for my 1:48 kin etc hornet?

Not happy with how the intakes have turned out so decided to try making covers instead. Being the odd kidney shape they are I haven't the faintest clue on where to start


Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

I have tried cardboard with a foam backing, but they were a dismal failure...

Maybe I should just give them a coat off watered down pva and a paint and see how they look??

Found it....
But looking at pictures of the fod cover us aussie use... they are an internal plug style



Not sure.... maybe fill it with a 2 part putty inside the foil to get the right shape??

How about that form card stuff Ultimate has
You could warm it up, mould it in the opening, trim excessand then wrap it in the foil for effect.
Paint and voila

What is this form card stuff of which you speak??

I was pondering it today... the best I could come up with (without needing to spend money) was to form cling wrap on the inside of the intake and then fill it with silicone. Once set get the silicone a light coat of putty, sand and paint or wrap it in the foil and paint....

Ooo brain wave... or fart either way

The putty stuff you use to cover nail holes in walls etc...
Line the intake the cling film and then fill the intake with that, wait till it's dry remove and sand, wrap in foil and paint....
At leaSt with the wall putty I can sand it down to fit the intake with the foil....

I might just be thinking out loud now....

The foil Swann-Morton scalpel blades come in is quite handy for making FOD covers.

I've made fod covers for a couple of my f-4s. I just placed the intake over some plasticard and drew round the inner surface to mark the shape. Then cut out and paint. Job done. You can add handles from fine wire if required.

Used some yoghurt foil burnished into the intakes and then cover in tamiya basic putty. Still need to clean up the edges a tad more though
