This is a non-ISM Special Interest Group build.

There will be 1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes as well as a random prize draw kindly donated by Tomcat64, Twokidsnosleep, DBmiller, Lee, and Lysus.

Because at ISM our ethos is that it doesn't matter what you build or how it turns out, as long as you enjoyed the journey, the way who gets the prizes is determined is going to be totally different to every other modelling website! It's not going to be just the prettiest or best built model that wins or places, the prizes will go to the best overall build thread. This means the more back story to your model you post, the more updates (with pictures) you post, the better the explanation of your techniques to achieve the end result you post (including your YouTube vids), the better chance you will have of getting placed for a prize. Basically what this means is that the more you share your information, the better the benefit to the modelling community, which in turn benefits every one of us. So, it doesn't matter if you're all thumbs, just started modelling last week, or can't achieve an exact replica of the subject you're building, we want to see that you've enjoyed the journey to the end result, no matter how it's turned out and most importantly, that you've had FUN getting there.....

Special interest group builds are great fun and gets a committed few working together towards the same goal and helps to get modellers out of their usual comfort zone and try something else whilst sharing their tips & techniques with the whole community. If you've never entered one before, don't be shy and have a go, we'd love to see your work....

Summer Sci-Fi Special Interest Group Build Guidelines - PLEASE READ

Objective: Build and share any science fiction plastic or resin kit from any film, television, print, or animated feature (or from the depths of your own imagination).

Summer Sci-Fi Special Interest Group Build Guidelines...

• Any plastic or resin Sci-fi kit.

• Any kit manufacturer.

• Any scale.

• Anyone may join, no skill requirement, no kit complexity minimum.

• No restrictions on aftermarket products (decals, PE, etc.) or additional material.

• Scratch building is allowed.

• You may enter as many times as you like, build as many kits as you like.

• All kits must be not be started prior to the start date - no exceptions (damaged while in transit sprue parts are allowed).

• All entries must have a build thread in this SiG forum area for the entry to be valid.

• A progressive build thread must be posted - which must include sprue and box shots, regular picture and/or video updates with comments on hints & tips - by sharing your build progress others can learn.

• You must provide a minimum of three still photographs (as well as any video) as part of your final reveal.

Hmm got a few weeks left for the start of this SIG. Got a few older Scifi kits on the shelf, trying to figure out what to start this with. This is my 1st build (with any model site really) so I am a beginner with all this stuff. Ive built many kits through the years so not a basic beginner modeler with so-so skills, but was out of it for 20 years or so, so this maybe tuff gettin back into it.

I think I may start with a very in-expensive kit to just get my feet wet again. I have some Glencoe Scifi space themed topics, one that is a classic UFO type that may be the one, and I have a diorama on my mind with it (I do love space stuff). I wanted to do that with this kit for years. I have a uss enterprise trek kit in my stash, a Star wars naboo kit and a couple Batmobiles. Mostly the mid 80 Bat cars. So to pick one is an issue!

So when this topic gets a bit beefy-er I my post a few boxes to get your opinions on this as well. I think I may already know, but I do appreciate many of your guys ideas on what to do here. I am not a seasoned modeler by any means and my tools need to be made more up to date, but Ill do what I can and see what you guys are gonna do. I do appreciate ANY feedback. Sounds like fun!!

I think going with an easy kit for your first go makes sense if that's what makes you the most comfortable. The goal is to enjoy yourself, not make it work

Building a bandai AT ST at the moment (man what a great kit), but will be aiming for a diorama featuring the Savoia from Porco Rosso as time allows (about to start a new job) for this build, been sitting looking at me for a while

Hmm Im not sure, looks like alot of work. Yup I remember seeing this post somewhere on this forum. It is very cool. Reminds me of what happens when you mix an F15 or 16 with a bit of Star Wars and some INCREDIBLE guns, haha!!. Wow that sucker scares me. In its build and its possibilities if it was real! Nice PE too! Wow, and the Stormtroper-ette is cool too.

I do wonder how much of this empty space is the final frontier though...


This kit got a serious slating when it first came out because of the engraved panel lines on the saucer section which weren't on the 1960's original and there are threads out on the net of people spending weeks filling and sanding to get rid of them; but this kit is actually based on the model of the Enterprise used in the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" which did include those panel lines. Anyway - it's been lurking for long enough in the stash now and I'm looking forward to tackling it in June.

If I get my act together and finish this one quickly enough there are plenty of Bandai & Fine Molds Star Wars kits lurking back there in stashland to let me get a second entry in

Hi Tony, picking the kit is always the first challenge Lysus is right, if you're just getting back into it then maybe think about tackling something fairly simple to start with and just enjoy the build process and the sense of completion. It's amazing how quickly four months soon disappears when you're working on a project... the way I work it tends to be fourteen weeks of "I've got plenty of time" followed by two weeks of blind panic.

Maybe have a browse through the instruction sheets on some of those kits and see what catches your eye in terms of making sense (believe me there's some instructions that seem to have very little relation to the plastic in the box) and also give an end result that appeals.

Just my two pence (or cents) but above all have fun - there'll be plenty of support from the crowd... oh and don't be surprised if threads get temporarily hijacked or veer way off topic (yeah you know who I'm looking at Lysus & TKNS!)

Oh very cool with the Enterprise Neil! I have a few myself, one is the old AMT model that I do remember from my childhood (exact copy of the 1966 version I built back-in-the day) This one I got from ebay in the late 80's. (the 6676 number, a real good rebox of that version but still the usual poor casting that AMT did on it I think) I dont know If I want to do that much work on it. At least for this SIG, I may still stick with my UFO or something else. I did not know that about it being a copy of the DS9 version you mentioned in this post. Thank you for that info about the revell one. (what a great episode that was, both Original and Deep space 9). Its funny to see my AMT is 650th scale and your Revell 1/600th?? Hmm I wonder if thats accurate. Im sure my AMT is off!! lol. Good luck with the best Scifi ship ever made!! I hope you win!!

Yes, I think thats whats best about this SIG Lysus, is the variation of people we are going to meet (at least me with you guys) and the sharing of what we like to do. The prizes are pretty sweet and it does help us to keep it going, but the sharing is cool and makes the build fun.

Oh BTW. Does this entry mark the kits we need to do for the contest, or can any one be changed before June 1st and revamped on this SIG location with another picture? Thanks.

Ahh.. great! I see your from the US, I see about 3 hours ago tho, haha. So far I see from the people and its only been a few days, there are some really great entries. Your Valkyre looks awesome!! and an old Enterprise is always cool from Neil not mention a couple great SW bandai kits. What does blow my mind is Lees Venus ship from the 60's. I was just watching that movie on YT a few weeks ago. I did not know it was called cosmostrator and that they made a version of it from that movie. Very neat stuff already on this SIG so far! Very cool.

Well Im sure this may be simple to all you pros that have been doing this for years, but I was so excited when I dug out my airbrush this weekend and cleaned it (again) thoroughly for my new found entry into this SIG. Really this thing has not been used for over 20 years. I am so very glad that I cleaned it before putting it away. Its an inexpensive one but seems great for basic painting which is what I used to do.

The compressor still works as well, but I am so upset that I did not invest in a tank at the time when I 1st got into airbrushing. My hobby shop said yea, it will work great without one, but it does get hot and I found out may be bad for long usages. Anyone know where to get a nice cheap gallon or 2 tank?

There were so many 50's-60's sifi classics on that show, but yes The Cosmostrator was really cool and had that same look and feel of the C-57D on Forbidden Planet, The Luna (Pegasis has this model), Flight to Mars, Spaceways, Day The Earth Stood Still Flying Saucer 16, The Space Ark on When Worlds Collide, War of the Worlds ships, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, This Island Earth, Rocketship XM, even the older Flash Gordon ships.... arrrgg the list goes on. God I loved those shows!!

Spent 3 hours in the ER. CAT scan showed no bleeding but I had an awesome 1:1 scale lump! It's gone down to just a very sore spot now.
Off work today with a bit of a headache but I may start my build thread anyway.

Four months off would be nice but I'd need a bigger bump for that one! SiGs are easy but in the past I would enter too many and not finish them.
By the way, that is an F-94B (an old Heller kit) from the Mass ANG at Otis Air Base on Cape Cod. The squadron was transferred to Barnes in Westfield a few years ago (F-15's these days).

Had a friend from a few years ago when we flew R/C planes together that worked at Barns (our club flew next to barns). He repaired A10's, mostly there engines before they got switched to F-15's. Needless to say.... he was so interesting to talk with. haha!
