Guy's Revell 1/48 Jaguar GR.1A

Post by GuyMac »

Jaguar is conceived and manufactured in the 60-ies by SEPECAT (Société Européenne de Production de l'avion Ecole de Combat et d'Appui Tactique)(European training and light attack aircraft production company), a joint venture between French manufacturer Breguet and the British Aircraft Corporation
Originally conceived as a jet trainer with a light ground attack capability, the requirement for the aircraft soon changed to include supersonic performance, reconnaissance and tactical nuclear strike roles.
Besides the l’Armée de l’air (French airforce) and the Royal Air Force, India, Oman, Ecuador and Nigeria obtained the Jaguar. It also saw real combat. Bosnia, the Gulf War to name a few.
This feline was replaced by the Tornado and Eurofighter Typhoon in the RAF and by Dassaults Rafale in the French airforce.

If you want to see some Jaguar footage... (link doesn't open in a new tab or window :wall: )

Jaguars have been seen in a lot of camo schemes : wrap around grey-green, overall grey and brown (pink/sand) color, etc... Also some special paint schemes have been applied for different occasions.

The kit, is the Revell 1/48 GR 1(A) and was released in 2014 as a 2012 Heller rebox with new decals. The Heller kit itself was a 1994 Airfix rebox.

The kit number is 04996 and offers one green-gray wraparound camo paint scheme and decals for two jets. 54 Sqn XX732 GR.1 (RAF Coltishall March 1979) and 41 Sqn XZ117 GR.1A (RAF Coltishall September 1987).

I’ve picked this kit up at a local shop for € 21,25

Image

The color of the sprues look and feel “Airfix-like” Light grey and soft. It has recessed panel lines which do look very soft at some places and more trench like in others.

The tail does show some nice (rivet) detail. I wonder why they didn't use the same amount of detailing on all the parts. The wheel gear bays are very sparsely detailed.

Image

The kit has four sprues and a clear sprue. No visible sinkmarks or flash. The clear parts are OK, almost no distortion.

Image

Image

Image

Image

The decals are very nice, semi-gloss and in register with not much carrier film (Cartograph)

The instructions are the (now) old, 12 pages long, Revell newspaper type.
The kit builds up in 29 steps.

Well it's no Phantom, but I will follow along.
:pop:
I am interested to see what you do to the weak moulding areas.
Kind of odd to see that.
Looks like their mould is wearing perhaps :

Moulds must be old and worn
On the lower parts of the fuselage it's very visible

Interesting to see that the revell kit has the fuselage in just 2 pieces, instead of 4 pieces like the KittyHawk kit...I'm a bit jealous of that!

Looking forward to seeing how you get on :pop:

Ya that is interesting, didn't notice first pass. Could be good, could be bad :

Bret is cruel... :D
Don't wait too long to get it Scott. I got the Rockin' Rhino when it was released and the good evening Da Nang. Sadly the good morning one isn't available at a normal price anymore. Have a look at the Zoukei-Mura (SWS) F-4's. No extra's (PE and Resin) like Eduard but the J is really nice. Have to get the S now :shhh: There's some AM for those kits on the way or already out there. But Rhino's are another story.

Full attention on the Jag now. ;)

Did some work on the office of the Jag today. Primed all in Ultimate Black.

Image

Also some sink holes had to be filled with Tamiya white primer. And again as it shrinks. Put on a thick layer this time and sanded it away.

Image

The wings have been assembled but needed a bit of sprue goo so I can get a smooth leading edge

Image

and
The backside of the wings needed some minor sprue goo touches

Image

I will leave the "goo" for a few days until it's properly dried and cary on with the assembly of the cockpit.

Do you like the trenches ? Or are these panel lines : :)

Sanding and filling Guy's Revell 1/48 Jaguar GR.1A

Post by GuyMac »

They see me sandin', they hatin'...

Past few build sessions, mainly have been about fixing gaps and steps.

The cockpit has been finished using Revell Aqua Acrylics, thinned with Ultimate thinner, and weathered with some Revell weathering powders. I bought these weathering powders just to check how they work. Well they're just like when you scrape off some pastels yourself.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Closed up the fuselage, left it to dry. Then it was time for some fixing and cleaning...

I fill..., Therefor I am.
Used Tamiya filler, let it dry, let it shrink, fill, shrink, dry... sand from course to eternity (buff).
I also used sprue goo. All this slows down the build as it needs to dry for a few days before one can sand and clean the sprue goo.

Image

Image

I don't like seam lines on a model where they're not supposed to be, so I spend a lot of bench time on getting them 'removed'

Image

Image

Now this has been taken care of, I can cary on building and priming. Soon I hope...

primed and ready to paint Guy's Revell 1/48 Jaguar GR.1A

Post by GuyMac »

The Jag is ready to be painted.

Finished priming in Ultimate Black today. I'll leave it to dry until tomorrow and I'll start with the grey part of the camo.
Once that part of the camo has been done and dried, I'll mask it using white tack and spray the green.
It will take a few paint sessions as it is a wrap-around camo.

Image

I also masked the canopy and fixed it temporarely for the paint work at hand. I've used some white tack to keep it in place. Also, I've noticed the canopy doesn't fit that well. It'll need some figuring out how to fix that.

Great work on sorting out those seams and joins :

Is that just some kind of sponge you've put up the air intakes?

Yes, it's the easiest way to keep intakes clean when painting.
Also easy to remove after you're done.

For wheelgear bays I used Playdoh in the past. But it dries out and some give off a nasty residue color which is very hard to clean out. So I try to mask them as best as I can or paint them last and mask the surrounding area.

First of two camo colors on Guy's Revell 1/48 Jaguar GR.1A

Post by GuyMac »

The gray MrHobby H 331 (Dark Sea Gray) has been sprayed on the Jag. Worked in thin misty layers until coverage was to my satisfaction.
Before painting, I've masker the camo pattern with whitetack. When fully dried, I will apply a new whitetack mask as it is a hard line camo scheme.

With the whitetack mask still on the model:
Image

After removing the whitetack:
Image

I know acrylics don't need that much time to dry but to be on the safe side, I'll leave it for at east 12 hrs before applying the new whitetack mask and spray the green (Mr Hobby H 330 Dark green)

All parts have been primed and will be painted soon in their proper color. So far it has been an enjoyable build. Learned some new things about filling gaps and get rid of steps. Only drawback : The canopy has a bad fit. Either it is a bad fit or it might be due to the temporary fixing. We'll find out later on. :shifty:

Thanks for that - I've been using wet tissue up until now for that kind of masking but the results have been a little erratic - I'll try some sponge on my next project.

And nice work on that first layer of paint too :th:

Another day has passed on Guy's Revell 1/48 Jaguar GR.1A

Post by GuyMac »

Last two days, I have been working on getting the camo on the jet painted and primed and painted some 'smaller' parts (wheels and wheel gear, weapons, pylons, ...)
The Jag has an AN/ALQ-101 ECM and a PHIMAT pod (Chaff dispenser) which, according to the Revell color call-out, should be painted in some weird green. So I looked up some reference pictures and found they both are gray. So I used gray instead of "Seegrun mixed with Clear". IMHO an error in the color call-outs.

Also started to construct the wheel gear. Aft gear consists of 9 parts. Front wheel construction needs 5 parts to be assembled. Takes a lot of time to get them done. Found out doing it in steps (build a part - let it dry) is the best way to get it done. Also some decals need to be added.

Front gear

Image

Rear gears

Image

Most of the 'small' parts primed in Ultimate Black and painted using Revell Aqua

Image

The camo (so far)

Image

And some cockpit shots. Nothing fancy, all OOB and decals. Used some pastels for weathering the seat and inside of the cockpit

Image

Image

"Steady as she goes"

To do :
- Paint the wheel gear bays
- Glosscoat and Decal the weapons
- Finnish the wheel gear, paint and glosscoat it
- Glosscoat the Jaguar
- Decals on the jet
- Protect the decals with another coat
- Adding the last details (antenna's and such)
- Adding the pylons and their load after glosscoating and decaling them
- Weather and Wash
- Round up and check, taking reveal pictures, place in display case,...
- Inbetween those last steps : having food, goto work, sleep, shower, visit the little room (for nr 1 and/or number 2), ...

Guy's Revell 1/48 Jaguar GR.1A

Post by GuyMac »

After some time glosscoating the jet, parts and sorting out the smaller pieces . Left it to dry for some days.
Tonight during the Live show, I' ve been mostly decaling the Jag.
These decals (printed in Italy, so I guess Cartograph) are nice and there aren't that many (which is good - I don't like decaling  )
But then again it takes your build to another level. It starts to look good :)

By using the "magic" waterpens with Microsol and Set and Walthers Solvaset the decals lay down nicely and smooth.

With roundels it starts looking great
Image

A big decal for the No Step. No problem with the sol-set-set combination
Image

Decals look great. As much as no silvering.
Image

Still one side to do and the belly of the beast.
After that: Wheel gear, antennas, fuel tank and armament which also needs some decals to dress them up

Jaguar : A piece of art

Post by GuyMac »

As seen in the news :thumb1:
A former RAF Jaguar became fine art, it's the brainchild of Fiona Banner, an artist who lives in London's East End.

Read more and see more on the Daily Mail website.

Panel lines & washes time on 1/48 Jaguar GR.1A

Post by GuyMac »

These last few days I've been busy on taking the last steps on the Jag.
I used MIG Dark wash to get the panel lines a bit of an accent and will be applying some Ultimate concrete, Dark dirt and dark grey washes also.
The jet needs a bit of cleanup on the panel line wash.
I'll put on a final coat of semi-gloss to seal it all in. I mixed 30% matt and 70% gloss to get my semi-gloss coat. I've tested it on my paint mule first :-)

Image

Image

The canopy might need some touch ups as well. :wall:
Also saw some silvering on the larger transparent decals. Need to figure out how I can make it les obvious
