The whole build process for this one was a lot of fun and thanks again to everyone that stopped by to offer help, advice, encouragement and general goofing around. The build thread is here if you'd like to take a look at how this came together.

I learned a lot about how to light stuff up without over thinking it or making it expensive, and also learned some more about how to use photoshop as you can see from the last couple of images above :) If I get chance I may go back and see if I can figure out how to edit out the remnants of the base supports where they encroach on the bottom of the secondary hull. Edit - I've tidied up both photo-shopped images by masking out the display stand and realigning the animated gif to reduce the jogging.

And I also learned about how not to handle decals! :bash:

Just one more photo of the whole thing including the base

Thanks for looking - Live Long and Prosper!

Thanks mate! I enjoy the original series, Next Generation & Enterprise all pretty much equally - my homage to Next Generation is that the backdrop for the animated image is a still from the TNG title sequence :shifty:

Thanks Tony - as well as learning about basic lighting I've also expanded my photoshop repertoire! The flickering LEDs was a challenge to capture but as with everything it's a lot easier when you know how!

Thanks Karl - I've not seen the new Trek yet since it's out on Netflix - how's it looking?

As for the lighting it wasn't as scary as I first thought but it did make things fiddly from time to time!

I know a bunch of people that are not liking the way they are dealing with the time-line in the new movies. I for (at least) one love what they did. It is going to let the new series of movies pretty much do whatever they want without conflicting with the previous movies. I really like the character choices. Simon Pegg makes and awesome Scotty and Karl Urban plays a great Bones. I would check them out. Just make sure you watch them in order.

Ah my mistake I thought Karl was referring to the new TV series (Discovery?).

I've really enjoyed the new set of movies. Oddly enough Pegg as Scotty is the one that doesn't work so much for me but I think the others are fine and completely agree with you about Urban as Bones - he's got that spot on :cheers2:

Yeah I was referring to the new series.. Discovery

Its one of those ones you need to watch and make your own mind up..

Look at it as though its something new.. Don't try and compare it to all the other series as it, in places, is hugely different..

3 Episode's in and I am enjoying it :)

I refuse to pay CBS to watch a tv show they won't air on normal tv. The only way you can watch it in the states is to subscribe to their online streaming service.

Thanks mate - this is the one with recessed panel lines. There's loads of room inside and I'm sure with your electronic skills you could probably wire up the nacelles with proper rotating strobe effects :)

Regarding the animated gif here's a quick summary I put together for Dan's weekly thread a little while back - let me know if you need any more detail on any of this.

I positioned the model in front of the TV with an appropriate background image. Set the camera up on a tripod and locked off the zoom & focus once I'd framed the model how I wanted it. Took ten shots of the kit with the internal lighting on, and one background shot without the model in it. The eleven shots were loaded into Photoshop, stacked and aligned and then using a sample of the background image I masked out the display stand on each shot. Finally each shot was setup as an animation frame on a continuous loop with a 0.1 second delay between each frame then saved as a GIF.

You can do the same thing with a video clip but that generates a really high number of frames (layers) which is what I did the first time around and it took forever to create the composite.
Cheers, Neil

Sorry I'm way late on this, but we're done! Yay!

I'll be contacting the judges shortly and let them get to work on all the very fine submissions this year. I hope you enjoyed yourself and look forward to seeing you again next summer!

Again, I'm sorry for the delay and if you need some explanation, you can find it here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=23701
