Kiwigav's Tamiya Repsol Honda RC213V Build

Post by kiwigav »

Tamiya Repsol Honda - RC213V '14

Hi all this my build for the above mentioned ISM Cars and Bikes Group Build.
This is a 1/12 scale race bike, kit no. 14130. I have also purchased the Tamiya Front Fork detail up parts (No. 12667) and also the Top Studio Detail Master set for this kit (TD23175).

Not only is this one of the more challenging Tamiya bikes to paint, I have added almost all the detail parts you can get. The chain set I have decided not to purchase. Nothing like throwing myself in the deep end!! But I love a challenge. I have also purchased some time ago the Gravity Colours Paint set and pre cut paint masks, but they are still coming. They are on the 3rd attempt to get the order to me, fingers crossed they arrive in time.

I have also printed off some images from the web for detail reference

Good luck to all building in this GB and fingers crossed my paint arrives.

Also many thanks to Ivan for stepping up to run this section of the forum :th:
Cheers Gav

Will be watching with interest and looking for build tips, never built a bike before, but I was lucky enough to win a Ducati kit in the live show some time back, not built up the courage to tackle it yet.
Looking forward to seeing more

My first Gravity order came almost right away, but the second Gravity order is “pending”
That was Nov 27th....should easily have been before Christmas. No contact at all, I had to e mail with no response yet due to the holidays. I will be after them next week :bash:
Hope something isn’t up within the Company  :

Update 1

I have got the engine assembled and painted. I have used AK Xtreme Metal Polished Aluminium with a AK Xtreme Black Gloss base. also used Tamiya XF56 Metallic Grey, have also used other shades of AK Aluminium to create subtle contrast . Also started on frame also going to be Polished Aluminium, but waiting to get some more black base to finish rest.

Will have to hold here as I need more supplies such as new CA glue for adding detail parts and other paint colours.
Pretty pleased so far, really don't want to rush this one, even if its at the expense of not finishing in time for GB.

Update

Have got the frame painted up. I am using AK xtreme Metal products here and found out something useful. It wasn't until I actually read the instructions of their Xtreme black base, that I realized that you don't need to prime before the base.

The main frame was primed then painted in AK Xtreme Black base then painted with Xtreme Polish Aluminium, The swing arm was just painted with Base black then the aluminium. Without the primer I was able to get a much smoother, glass like finish than the primed one.
Sorry I didn't get a photo of the swing arm in the black. But the result is far better this way.
I ended up polishing up the frame and giving it another black coat before the aluminium so they both matched. Pretty pleased with the metal finish.

now waiting on some carbon fibre decals to arrive then I can finish up the frame

Machine: RC213V 2014

Machine Specs

Overall length (mm) 2,052
Overall width (mm) 645
Overall height (mm) 1,110
Wheelbase (mm) 1,435
Road clearance (mm) 115
Weight (kg) As per FIM regulations
Engine type Liquid-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC 4 valve, V-4
Displacement 1000
Maximum power Over 175 KW
Frame type Aluminum twin-tube
Wheels Front (inch) 16.5
Wheels Rear (inch) 16.5
Suspension Front Telescopic fork
Suspension Rear Pro-link
Fuel tank capacity (litres) 20

Concept
The concept of the 2014 RC213V continues the 2013 project of mass centralization with the improvements of each part of the machine. Honda’s concept of mass centralization aims to produce a machine with optimized handling characteristics combining stability, agility, resistance to wheelies and maximum cornering grip.

Chassis
For 2014 the chassis has been modified in its rigidity balance and designed to reach the maximum compatibility between turning and stability. The twin-spar aluminium chassis is immensely light and yet provides the ideal stiffness and strength characteristics required to contain and deliver more than 170kw (230bhp) from the RC213V’s engine to the rear tyre. As well as strength, the chassis features the right amount of carefully designed flexibility to enhance tyre grip.

Engine
We adopted 4 cylinder “V” engine with 1,000 capacity to RC213V which can exploit maximum power of 1,000cc keeping duration for 18 races in season with 5 engines.

We have reviewed all the details of the new engine, making it lighter and reducing friction. We also achieved better fuel consumption than the RC212V whilst retaining more power after 2,000km of durability testing.

Suspension
For 2014 the RC213V is fitted with Ohlins suspension front and rear. Providing the essential link between wheel and chassis, the suspension’s job is to keep the tyre in contact with the ground and producing maximum grip as the machine hits the thousands of bumps and ripples encountered on every lap. It’s a crucial link in the performance chain and for this reason both Repsol Honda riders have a dedicated Ohlins technician assigned to him.

Bodywork
The lightweight carbon-fibre bodywork plays an important role in making the RC213V as aerodynamic as possible. The 2014 RC213V has a modified fairing to reach the maximum compatibility and performance between handling and drag.

Tyres
MotoGP tyres are supplied exclusively by Bridgestone. Each rider is permitted to use a maximum of 20 slick tyres during each grand prix weekend and 12 wet tyres, or 14 if every session is deemed wet. Each grand prix weekend, Bridgestone’s slick tyres are available in two compounds and the wet tyres available in just a single compound, selected by Bridgestone in advance. The softer of the Bridgestone slick tyres is marked with a white line painted around the sidewall. The tyre sizes are: Front tyre size: 125/60R16.5 Rear tyre size: 190/65R16.5

Brakes
Carbon fiber front brakes are provided by Brembo. Carbon brakes work best when they’re hot and reach anything up to 400 degrees ºC. For rear disk and front disk under wet conditions the RC213V relies on Yutaka steel brake disks.

She is an absolutely gorgeous bike....the colour scheme is just fabulous. Love those real photos.
Take note that the wheel colour is darker orange than the farings....looks like a bit of red added into the orange to get it a smidge or two deeper orange 🍊

Looking great mate :th:

I've been playing around with the AK Xtreme on my GSX-R build and I've now got the hang on it I think. For me, I got the surface as smooth as possible, turned down the air to around 10psi or less as each colour seems to vary, light dust coats with about 15mins between them. This is the result with Polished Aluminium on the bottle cap the picture really doesn't do it justice, plus it's damaged from the capping machine, but you can see the potential. If you look you can see the reflection of my phone!
