While I take a hiatus from my Corvette build, I've pulled this one out of my stash. It has been many years since I built my only other Tamiya F1 car. I hope I can do this one justice. As complicated as this car seems to be, Tamiya engineering should guarantee a fall-together build. This will be a strictly out-of-box build. I hope the decals hold up despite the kits age of 25 years.

Well there you go, it is a big green swoop. You can definitely do that.
Still, I wanted to see if those decals bailed out on you so I could be prepared

Havent seen it in 10 years, still packed since I moved 2008.

I started the build and after all evening, I still haven't gotten thru step 1. I removed the parts from the tree, cleaned up some seams, and primed with gray Stynylrez. Then using Tamiya acrylics, painted the pieces according to the callouts in the instructions. A lot of masking and paint mixing were required.

As apart of step 1, the first two aero parts are attached. The instructions say to paint these TS47 Chrome Yellow. The were primed, then airbrushed with chrome silver before spraying the chrome yellow from the spray can. Interestingly, these parts are to have green decals applied. If I were so inclined, I would have ordered the correct yellow and green from Zero paints, forgoing the decals.

Interesting to see how the decals go
Have you found lots of seam lines on your parts???
Man this ‘88 Fujimi kit Ferrari I am doing has seam lines on the edges of every part...you don’t see them all until you are in paint. Driving me nuts

I have had some good progress these past two days. The decals seem to be fine and applied them to those rear aero parts. They were a bit fussy to apply and had a good amount of carrier film outlining the color. I used decal solvent to help them conform. After the decals were in place and dry, I trimmed the edges using a fine grit sanding needle. This process did a very small amount of damage. I mixed some Testors acrylic yellow and green to make s few touch ups.

There are so many parts to this engine and suspension that I am only thru step 2 of the build. There is also a lot of detail painting. The majority of the paints used are Tamiya acrylics and Model Master acrylic used here and there. One thing I wish I had done better were the silver lettering on the cam covers. My Molotow chrome pen flowed a little too well.

Today, I realized that I must order a new set of decals. I have been working on the cockpit tub's paint job. It is now yellow and ready for the green decals. Upon close examination of the decal sheet, it was apparent that the entire sheet was crazed. I had a solution for that in Testor's Decal Bonder. This spray is intended to seal inkjet printed decals so you can soak them in water. It can also be used to repair damaged decal sheets. Normally, this works well, but when I sprayed my sheet, the ink bled into every crazed crack.

Indycals.com sells a replacement sheet, but without the green parts. That is OK, because on those kit decals I can simply cut off the clear carrier film around the edges.

Wow other than old decal issues (yea, thats a scary thing, Im sure) the rest of that build looks awesome! I hope Indycal gets you new ones soon!

I haven't had much time to work on this build. I do have a small update.

I finished the cockpit build and installation. I also painted the cockpit section yellow. Because the IndyCals decal sheet doesn't include the green or blue areas, I stuck with the kit decals for those painted areas.

As before the yellow is Tamiya spray can TS47.

The green is the decal. It has a very subtle alligator texture. Because I am not confident in my masking ability, I am leaving it. The black areas have been brush painted.

Some of these edges are rough and will require touch up. I am hoping for a good color match. I also hope that a clear coat will smooth over any resulting imperfections.
