Mark's DAF XF 105

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys
So this will be the buildthread for my entry in this GB
It will probably be the biggest "car" in the build since the XF 105 is a truck used for long and/or heavy haulling

So first i will be boring you with a short bit of history about the company and their activities

The DAF company was born prior to WWII
DAF is short for : van Doorne's Aanhanger Fabrieken wich is dutch for van Doorne's Trailer Factories
In the beginning they only made trailers for trucks and cars
After a couple of years thet started to produce parts for cars aswell
Mainly becuase the skill of metal working was there allready
After some time the van Doorne brothers who founded the company decided to start producing cars aswell
Unfortunatly WWII started and the factory was used to produce parts for the Germans
When the war was over DAF started to make cars , trucks and trailers
Even though they stopped making trailers for civilian thry still made military trailers
Mostly small ones that where towed by jeeps or tanks

For the civillian market they made trucks and cars
After a number of fairly succesfull cars models and even some succes in formula 3 racing the company sold the car division to Volvo
But the truck division remained along with a racing department and a 'military' division
This division adepts regular production trucks for military use but they also made some other products like the landing gear for the dutch F-16
In the mean time the racing department started to focus on track and rally racing with trucks
The comapny had a number of wins in the Paris-Dakar rally with driver Jan de Rooy during the 80's
But during the 90's they stopped with racing for a while

The regular factory produced several types of trucks like the 2100 and 2300 series in the 80's to the 45,55,65,75,85,95 trucks from the 90's wich had good succes and made the company grow
In the late 90's they replaced their line of tracks with 3 base models
The LF as the light trucks replaced the 45 and 55
The CF replaced the 65,75 and 85 models
And the XF replaced the 95 model
Allthough the number is still included in the type
After a while the 105 was added as the biggest of the bunch ,they have larger cabines and bigger/stronger engines wich makes them better for long hauls or heavy hauls
From 2003 onwards DAF restyled the trucks to make the second generation of the XF,CF and LF series
This was done again in 2015

And now it is time for the kit
It is this one
Image
This is a XF 105 of the second generation wich in my peronal opinion looks the best out of the 3 generations

And this is what is in the box
Image
The unboxing
Image
The single piece chassis
Image
Cabine parts
Image
More cabine parts
Sadly some parts snapped from the sprue
Image
Various parts for the cab and chassis
Image
Cab interior and exhaust parts
Image
Wheels
Image
Clear parts
Image
Rubber tyres
Image
Decals

And that is all there is in the kit
Next time i will post the building stages so i can get the thread going
The build itself is going very well and i actually primed the build already and it is now ready to get painted
But more on that next time

Thanks for stopping by and having a look \take care and happy modelling
Cheers
Mark

Thanks guys
I'm in the middle of painting this bad boy at the moment
Allthough in terms of colors it is fairly simple
Some looks like the plastic will be done with some varnish to make it look matt compared to the satin chassis
I want to make it look new or a bit like a show track so it will be clean

Hi guys
Well it is about time for the buildupdate
Wich i keep forgetting about to begin with

Building this kit isn't very hard and the most challenging bit is to put the 4 big panels of the cab together
Because there is no engine and the cab isn't able to tilt forward there are a couple of challenging parts that aren't present in this kit

So let's move on to the build
Image
20180105_092757 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Step 1 is easy
Just a big casting piece needs to be removed from the chassis piece

Image
20180105_093529 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then you need to choose between step 2,3 or 4
This is to determine wich chassis version you want
I picked step 2
Allthough the parts are the same for each step it is the way you need to install them that makes a minor difference

Image
20180105_095104 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
The subassemblies from step 2

Image
20180105_095651 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Installing the parts

Image
20180105_100213 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
A better view of the rear suspension parts

Image
20180105_154848 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Step 5 is about the front springs and the bottom of the fueltank
This is the first half

Image
20180105_155158 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
And the second half

Image
20180105_160352 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Step 6 adds the steering and wheels
I will add the rubber tyres later on

Image
20180105_161203 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Step 7 adds a couple of mudflaps and the rearwheels

Image
20180105_161847 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Step 8 is for the walkways that i painted seperate and the dish on the back

Image
20180105_221323 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Step 9 adds a couple of support parts for the cab and the sidepanels
I didn't glue them on yet because i want to paint them as seperate parts to save me a lot of time masking parts

Image
20180105_222602 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Step 10 is the start of the cab

Image
20180105_230040 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
And the other half of step 10

Image
20180109_005613 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then i started to ignore the buildsteps and paint all the cabparts in one go
These are about 4 steps all at once
I mixed up a light grey as that is one of the standard colors DAF uses
The seats where made a bit lighter as the rest
I didn't add much else as they often look rather simple inside

Image
20180109_010836 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
And the actuall construction began

Image
20180109_011421 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
The roof was added wich has a bit of a tight fit and toom a while to get on there

Image
20180109_011641 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Image
20180109_012335 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
And then i basicly had a truck
Except for the parts on the back of the cab

Image
20180109_140332 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then the wind deflectors where added

Image
20180109_143522 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
And the airfilter

Image
20180109_143539 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
And the mirrors

Image
20180109_143545 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then all i needed to do was to add the rearmudflaps and the boxes for ths taillights

Image
20180109_143827 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
So the truck was done in terms of building it
And here are all the seperate parts prior to painting

And that is all i have for now
Next tine is about painting and decals on this rather big build
Well bigger then i expected anyway

Thanks for stopping by and happy modelling
Take care
Cheers
Mark

It makes for a nice nice

Hi guys
Well it is time for the last update allready
With the truck build last time all that was left was to paint it and apply the decals

So let's start off with this rather short update
Image
20180122_021929 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
I started with the base color on the body
I used Tamiya's Lemon yellow
Then i added the black edge around the glass
It looks very bad on the inside edge but that is on top of the masking so it doesn't matter
The bare metal parts are done with Alclad chrome and the rest is Tamiya flat black

Image
20180124_004952 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Once the paint had time to dry i added a coat of Alclad aqua gloss

Image
20180129_080004 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
I then started with the decals
The 2 big decals feel rather thick and fairly stiff
They didn't break though

Image
20180129_093547 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then i started to add all the clear parts like the head and tail lights

Image
20180129_100301 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
I then added a second coat of aqua gloss
Once that was dry i added the mirrors and removed the masking

Image
20180129_100304 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then the wheels got their tyres
And the sunscreen was painted with Tamiya smoke

Image
20180129_101127 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then the wheels and sunscreen where glued in place

Image
20180129_101131 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
And the windscreenwhipers where added as a finishing touch

Image
20180129_102031 by Mark Verploeg - Flickr2BBcode LITE
And then i called it done

The rest of the reveal shot will be in the reveal section
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Take care
Cheers
