Beemax 1/24 Volvo 240 Group A

Post by JonMW »

Finally got my Beemax Volvo 240 so now I can get started on this GB. As a car loving Swede I naturally have had and tuned a few Volvos, so I was really happy when Beemax announced that they would release the 240 Turbo.

The plan for this build is to a pretty quick and simple build just adding the Beemax extra PE and a couple of wires. I will probably do one of the cars from the 1986 Macau race.

The kit looks pretty good but there is a bit more flash then I think it should have for being a brand new kit. And the tires are conical, the only reason I can think of why they did this is that with the camber of the wheels the model will only sit on the inner edge of the tires if they where cylindrical. But it should, so I'm not sure if this is just a mistake or if some one at Beemax saw that the car had a lot of camber and don't understand how tires work. I might try to find some other tires that are a bit better.

Until i get started on the build here is the 1986 Macau race in awesome VHS quality ;)

Cool Volvo racer
I hear the drivers signal for all turns, really annoying on an oval track ;)

Time to actually do an update on this. Started with the body, the molding of the body is really nice and clean and don't need much cleanup. So after a quick sanding I gave it a coat of Ultimate grey primer, the body is molded in white but the interior, chassis and bumpers are molded in black and I wanted the same grey as a base under the body color for all the parts to make sure the white is the same shade on all parts. For the body color I used Ultimate White primer. When the paint had dried I started to add the decals, they went down really well, only needing a coat of Micro Sol to conform and are pretty tough and can stretch a bit. To finish off the body I gave it a couple of coats of 2K clear and let it set for a couple of days.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Have been doing more work on the Volvo trying to get it done. First thing was to clean up the exhaust, it's made in two parts so there is a seam in the middle of the outlet that will be hard to sand. So I added some thinned Mr Surfacer 1200 that pretty much self leveled to get rid of the seam.

Image

All the small parts where attached to tooth picks and painted.

Image

I needed to make templates for the carbon and kevlar decals for the dashboard and seat. For this I used Tamiya masking tape cut to shape on the back of the seat and on the dashboard. These where then transferred to the decal sheets and cut out and applied.

Spend some time masking the chassis and painted the molded in parts in different colors.

The wheels are chromed in the box, it's a bit too shiny and looks a bit toyish. So the chrome was removed using oven cleaner and the wheels painted Gunze GX2 gloss black to prepare for the metal colors. I started with painting the centers in AK Xtreme metal gold, the centers where then masked using a circle cutter and the rim painted Alclad polished aluminium.

Then it was just a matter of putting all the parts together, I also added some lead wire for the air jacks and wiring.
