Kiwigav's Tamiya McLaren MP4/13

Post by kiwigav »

Hi all
This is my second thread in the GB. I have always wanted to build a F1 car. Got a few extras also.
I managed to get some Zero Paints to New Zealand so this kit may take a slight priority over Repsol Honda build, which is waiting for supplies.

I am planning to get "West" decals also

UPDATE 1

Here is my progress on my build
First job was to fill pin marks and paint chassis floor. The paint call out for this was X18 Tamiya semi-gloss black. apon looking at some photos it looked to me like a composite material. So using some poetic licence I made a mixture of gunmetal and black. pretty pleased the way it came out. I painted the engine heat shield with AK Xtreme Polished Aluminium.

Have the engine painted and The detail kit from top studio called for the top of the engine ( excuse my lack of knowledge of engine parts) to be covered by a metal foil which Top studio provided, I'm assuming a form of heat shield
Image
Image

Painted the exhaust, first Xtreme Metal black base, then xtreme chrome. heat stained with clear orange and clear blue. Just a little finishing touches to do on exhaust and did a partial mock up.

Exhaust Shield was done with Top Studio PE bent into a curve and foil sticker applied and texture made a round file.

new update coming soon

Hi fellow modelers, here's a big up date. I have only been working on the engine but have been adding top studio detail.
I am not use to doing so much wiring detail and my precision not perfect yet. I think my skills with CA glue need to improve.
Working with fiddly detail is nothing less than frustrating at times. hope you like the progress photos, some images may look repetitive, but wanted to make sure I kept a record of the steps.

another mock up to see hows the engine is looking

Next up is to work on cockpit with added detail seat belts and the suspension springs from Top Studio

Looking really sweet there Gav just a tip for the cockpit, join the 2 halves together then remove most of the plastic on the underside so the seat unit fits in after the cockpit has been sanded primed and painted not as per Tamiya instructions otherwise the seat unit is nigh on impossible to paint and mask properly. It's a great kit I built 2 of them when they first came out and had them signed at a tyre test at Silverstone by Hakinen and Coulthard .the kits were for a charity auction for the BRDC track marshalls.
Good luck with the rest of the build Gav.

Just caught up with this one - absolutely awesome work on the engine.

Love the heat discolouration you've achieved on the exhaust.
