UH-1 D "Huey"

Post by Hawkmoon »

:bananaThis will be my contribution to the SIG the venerable Huey from Vietnam. The kit is from Kitty Hawk and my first build of one of there kits, I also have the Eduard etch set.

The kit is made up of three sprues of grey styrene with no visible flash is present and the clear parts in there own box. Two sets of decals are provided, markings and 4 different noseart. A small amount of etch comes with the kit if you look closely one of the engine vents is missing its covered both sides with clear plastic so it was packed that way. I have plenty of etch spare to make a substitute.

The instructions are very good and clear but beware as some parts are for later Hueys like the wire cutter on the roof. Six colour plates are provided four for Vietnam and a German and Thai airforce.

The Eduard etch set replaces the instrument panels which are reported to be poor and misplaced on the kit.

I'm glad someone is building a Huey, I grew up seeing these in action via news reels and the movies depicting those times...Even John Wayne starred in a couple.... :th: :cheers2:

Actually I might be wrong and Green Berets his only one......I liked that film realistic or not. It was very entertaining.

  Managed to get a little done today. The basic cockpit has been assembled and the coloured dash/centre etch added. Some of the rear seats have been added but seat belts also need to be added to the other seats. The two pilots seats have been made up and are again awaiting the etch seat belts.

:jd: Had to be done dry brushed some Ali about then red wash to represent the red dust /mud of Vietnam and a siena wash went on last to tone it down. The cock pit has been dry fitted into the fuselage.

  Work continues on the Huey. The two fuselage sides were made up and painted inside then the engine bay was made up/painted and the exhaust nozzle painted. The two fuselage halves had there glazing added then they were joined together after adding the cockpit, engine area and exhaust nozzle. The roof was assembled and the tail boom also assembled and added to the rear, the gazing was then added to the front cockpit area.

Next I jumped forward in the build and added the skids so she had something to sit on and the engine covers fitted to the rear one piece of etch as I mentioned at the start of the build is missing and is for the engine cover. Think I will leave it missing A La lost in combat/flight in Nam.

Next its masking off the glazing and some paint can go on the outer fuselage.

  All the etch and assorted grab handles, equipment has been added to the outer surface of the fuselage, the main and tail rotors were made up. after masking off the windows and other parts that needed masking the fuselage was given a coat of gloss black then a coat of Alclad Aircraft Aluminium was applied.

I still have the two gun stations to make up but that just about finishes the build of this just the painting left to do.

Painted that well. Does the silver imply that your going to give it that well worn look ?
