New use for DIY paint mixer

Post by ChrisLX200 »

I have this DIY paint mixer made essentially from a 140mm PC fan (variable speed) set onto springs having a silicone tube core to constrain (mostly) movement to the lateral plane. The out of balance fan produces a rapid swirling motion with minimal up/down movements. The top plate has some strong magnets to which can be attached my paint bottles (the bottles have ferrous penny washers glued to the bases) making it easy to drop them on and have the contents thoroughly mixed without have to hold it in place or fiddle with straps etc., (or even stop the motor!). Up to 5 bottles can be mixed at once.

Anyway, I had a thought that I could also attach a fine diamond lapping plate (1200 grit) using the same magnets whereby the rapid movement would speed up it's cutting action making the job less tedious. I also had some worn nippers in need of some tlc to try on the thing. I used some alcohol based thinner as a lube and gently pressed the (closed) blades against the plate and used a gentle rocking motion. Result was a nicely ground face which, whilst not perfect, was much better than it was. I tried something similar years ago to sharpen wire cutters by using the side of a fine 8" grinding wheel but it's very easy to lose control of the cutting action and ruin the tool. Less of a danger with this method.

Not sure if I fully understand how you made this. It doesn't look like any Pc fans I'v seen.
Understand the springs and the off centre weight is about all. Please excuse my lack of comprehension....I'm getting older :(
Listen and appear wise
