Tomcat's 1/35 Takom Panzer I Negrillo - SCW

Post by Tomcat64 »

My entry into this GB will be a Panzer I ausf A "Negrillo" from the Spanish Civil War

First some background from the excellent online Tank Encyclopaedia along with some images I've found across the interweb
Overview
General conception
After Hitler’s victory in the 1933 elections, Germany started rearming and expanding its army. Due to the treaty of Versailles, the German army wasn’t allowed to have any tanks when Hitler came to power. Officially called the Sd.Kfz.101 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug/Special-Purpose Vehicle), the Panzer I became the first mass-produced tank of the Wehrmacht. In 1933, after extensive trials, production of the Sd.Kfz.101 began. In 1936 it got its modern name, the Panzerkampfwagen I Ausführung A (Ausf.A). The first fifteen were delivered without turrets, for training purpose only. Mass-production of the proper military model began later.

Image

The first Panzer
The Panzer I was the very first in a long line of tanks. The only other German tank at the time was the sluggish and massive Neubaufahrzeug. Its story is linked to the 1919 treaty of Versailles, which severely reduced the abilities of the German Army to rebuild a potent army. The total amount of soldiers allowed was reduced, so that only a police and defensive token force could be maintained. However, many officers saw in these limitations the potential to build a new small, but well-equipped and very well trained, professional army. Due to the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was forbidden from owning any kind of tanks. But, despite the fact that the few tanks built in 1917-18 never had the power to change the outcome of the Great War, the potential of this new weapon was well-understood.

In 1930, Krupp was selected by Waffenpruefwesen 6 (the automotive and tank design office of the German army) to work on the design of a small light tracked tractor named Kleintraktor. It was to be equipped with a 20 mm (0.79 in) auto-cannon, powered by a 60 hp engine and weigh no more than 3000 kg. A year later, in 1931, Krupp sent a description of the Kleintraktor-Fahrgestell (chassis) to Wa.Prw.6. A description of the superstructure was promised after the construction of a wooden model.

The Krupp Kleintraktor was described as a fast and manoeuvrable tracked vehicle that weighed about 3.5 tons and could achieve 45 km/h (28 mph). The hull was made of steel sheets welded together. It was armed with a 20 mm (0.79 in) auto-cannon and carried 500 rounds.
As development proceeded, several prototypes were made, and faults were removed from the tank. The turret was redesigned to fit 2 machine guns and armor was increased. In 1933, the Panzer I was considered ready and an order was placed for 150 training tanks, with another 1000 combat-ready tanks being ordered the following year. Neither of these orders were fully delivered.

Image

The Ausf.A
This first model came into production in late 1934, and continued until early 1936. Around 800 were built, having several limitations. The armor was insufficient, being only 13 mm (0.51 in) at its thickest. There were problems with the early suspension, making the tank pitch backwards at high speeds. There were also concerns about the propulsion, overheating, the commander being both gunner and loader of the two machine guns, and communication going through old-fashion vocal tubes. With its two machine guns, light armor and speed, these machines were nothing more than training and scout tanks. Despite this, most of them fought in regular Panzer divisions alongside the improved Ausf.B until late 1941.

Image

The Panzer I in Spain
After the Civil War broke out in 1936, the two opposing sides quickly found themselves supported by friendly countries, which desired to test their equipment and tactics. For obvious ideological reasons, the Soviet Union quickly chose to support the Republican Front and sent waves of T-26s, a Russian derivative of the Vickers 6-ton. On the other side, the Nationalist Forces were supported by Germany and Italy. Italy sent dozens of CV-33 tankettes, with Germany sending the then only tank available. Approximately forty-five Panzer I Ausf.A tanks were sent, followed by seventy-seven Ausf.B tanks. Most of were delivered to the Gruppe Imker, the tank unit of the Condor Legion under Hugo Sperrle. The Spanish forces dubbed them “Negrillos”, due to their dark grey paint. Most were quickly painted in a new lighter scheme.

The first engagement that the Panzer I took part in was the battle of Madrid. Here, the Nationalist forces managed to defeat the Republicans, despite the Panzer I being inferior to the T-26. Only at very short range and using AP rounds could the Russian tanks be taken out. Col. Wilhelm Ritter von Thoma even offered rewards for every captured T-26, so he could bolster his unit’s abilities.

In August 1937, General Pallasar received a request from Franco to upgrade several Panzer Is with the 20 mm (0.79 in) Breda model 1935. Only four were converted at the Armament Factory of Seville in September 1937, and further orders were suspended due the large number of T-26 tanks available by then. The Panzer I remained in service with the Spanish until 1954, when it was replaced by the M47 Patton.

The Kit
Now onto the kit
Image

This is a 2021 release from Takom and is one I've been really looking forward to breaking into since it arrived into the stash in October last year and unlike other manufacturer's 2 in 1 kits does actually contain enough parts to build two complete models (the ausf A and the ausf B). Since it's the ausf A that I'll be building for this GB I'll build the ausf B in a separate thread in the general armour section here.

On opening the box the parts are nicely bagged with multiple copies of the same sprue frame in a bag together so here are the parts

Four A frames
Image

Two Bs and the upper hulls
Image

A pair of Cs, the lower hulls & turrets
Image

D & E
Image

And a couple of Fs to finish off
Image

Some PE, wire & decals which I've left bagged for now
Image

The instruction book which has the same cracking artwork on the cover as the box top
Image

I won't go through all the pages of this as I'll cover them off as we progress but here's a sample page, the instructions are broken down so that section 2-1 covers the ausf A and 2-2 covers the ausf B so I'll have to pay attention and keep parts & subassemblies separated if I'm building them side by side
Image

And finally here are the after market decals which I'll use to make the Spanish Civil War example
Image

The plastic feels great and crisp but there are a fair number of hefty sprue gates & ejector nubs that'll need some care on the more delicate items
Image

Image

All being well I should be able to make a start on this one later this week or at the weekend.

And just to give an idea of the size of these things here's the 1/35 Ausf A upper hull sitting next to a 1/72 Panther
Image

Thanks for looking :cheers2:
Cheers, Neil

Looks like it's going to be fun. It's the same chassis as the Panzerjaeger I built a couple of years ago and it's a cute little thing.

Tomcat's 1/35 Takom Panzer I Negrillo - SCW - Build Part I

Post by Tomcat64 »

I've been able to get some bench time after work this week and made a start. Overall the styrene feels great & very crisp although there are fine mould lines on most parts that need some attention with scalpel & sanders.

The first section of the instructions deals with the return rollers & some bits for the hull
Image

As my preference is to attach the running gear after painting I've just added the parts to the hull & kept the rollers separate for now (there are two spares which I can use for lining up tracks later)
Image

Section 2 moves onto building wheels & bogies
Image

I decided at this point to bite the bullet & spend a couple of hours working on all the wheels (for both the ausf A and ausf B as many parts are shared) so skimmed through the rest of the instructions to find out what was needed
Image

And again due to the way I want to leave the wheels off for now the bogies weren't fully assembled.
Image

Essentially the back plate was attached to the hull and the rest dry fitted for now
Image

And over the page more of the same...
Image

Dry fitted in place
Image

That's all for now - this is going together really nicely so hopefully I can make more progress over the weekend.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:
Cheers, Neil

Tomcat's 1/35 Takom Panzer I Negrillo - SCW - Build Part II

Post by Tomcat64 »

More steady progress on the leetle tank...
Image

The next couple of steps add the bow plate and then start on the suspension for the left hand side
Image

Just a quick note here is that the springs had a mould line to deal with and I sorted this out with a scribing tool in the gaps
Image

Wheels & bogies then needed to be added
Image

And as per the other side these were all just dry fitted aside from the bogie back plates
Image

The same went for the drive sprocket, additional road wheel & beam thingy
Image

Here they are in place
Image

Then onto the tracks...I had hoped to be able to lay these flat and allow the cement to partially set before curving the ends around, but unfortunately the "link" parts A9 are actually two joined links and are pre-curved so won't lay flat.
Image

So after some faffing about trying to add them directly to the wheels on the chassis I ended up using the sprocket & idler from the opposite sides as formers
Image

First side completed
Image

And then the other side was tackled in the same way and as a bonus both runs popped nicely off the wheels when they were set
Image

And that's where the weekend ran out; next up for this one is to add some details on the rear plate and then make a start on the upper hull.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:

Tomcat's 1/35 Takom Panzer I Negrillo - SCW - Build Part III

Post by Tomcat64 »

I've been trying to get around to posting an update for this for a few days but work keeps getting in the way - ridiculous state of affairs!

So... after the tracks were done there were a few bits to add to the rear plate
Image

Which went without too much hassle but I forgot to photograph

Then we went up top
Image

First point here was some fairly impressive injection pins, which were chopped out and cleaned up
Image

Then back to the top sides - I'll add the tools after I've painted them so just assembled the exhausts and moved on
Image

Here are the fenders attached to the pram with the exhausts dry fitted them as they'll be painted up separately as well
Image

Then onto the upper hull and a load of view ports to attach
Image

One thing to note here is that the tow cable ends (a4) are trapped between the hooks (a3) and the hull - I'm assuming there was some sort of sprung latch on the real thing. Also a3 seemed fairly insistent on joining the carpet monster and had to be rescued more than once...
Image

More of the same around the back
Image

Although I've left the tow cables off to faff about with later
Image

All the hatches had levers despite the all being in the closed position as there's no other interior
Image

But I fitted them anyway just for practice :)
Image

Out onto the rear deck and I assembled the platform with the smoke dischargers and rear air intakes (I think)
Image

The platform is dry fitted to assist with painting
Image

Time to add the pram cover...
Image

The PE Exhaust grilles will also be left off until later although I do need to find something to curve them around. The two hull halves popped together really nicely with a little encouragement
Image

Final greeblies
Image

And again the aerial is left off until painted
Image

Over the page and we tackle the turret
Image

One note here is that the turrets are very similar with only the arrowed notches for lifting hooks on the ausf b being the difference
Image

All hatches in place with more of those slightly redundant levers
Image

After taking this photo of the assembled unit I realised that I'd calmly and carefully added the gun assembly the wrong way up
Image

Luckily the TET was still soft enough for me to prise things apart and correct this before the final build photo
Image

So that's us done with building - onto priming next; but since I'm building the ausf b in parallel here are the twins next to each other
Image

Hopefully I'll be able to make a start on the paintwork this week, although I am waiting on some colours to turn up.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:

Looking great - strange that they have hatch levers but no interior!

When I have to curl PE I use the rolling method rather than wrapping it around something. I've had far better results with it. Here's a helpful video I found to demonstrate

Me too,but getting a piece of hard /soft foam that is just right isn't always easy. Where he resorts to adding 2 dobs of solder at the ends of the joint to get a curl where they join. It still didn't look perfect although he whipped it away pretty quick. What I think is better is using a harder surface to roll onto at this point so the ends of the pe don't push down into the soft surface as much and not adding those high points at all......Also a drill bit while being a small diameter is also short and a bit of a bugger to control....imho.

Yes, it needs to be adapted to suit of course. No solder will be needed in most cases, especially for the exhaust guards as they don't curl right round and meet. For the rolling surface I find that a buffer stick (or several lined up) is perfect.

Apologies just dropped on this and love the updates and theme, especially as I loved building the 1/16 Takom Panzer 1.

Lovely job chap,

DW
Thanks for dropping in DW - these two little tanks have been really enjoyable to put together, I think they probably just down scaled the 1/16 version.
Honestly Neil, what a fantastic script, post and insight. I really love these little tigers and Takom produce some lovely models. I particularly like the Plastic they use. Its all good quality stuff. keep up the great works.
DW
Thanks folks :cheers2:

I've made a start on the paintwork in the evenings this week, and will hopefully get some decent time in and around the rugby this weekend.

One other note is that having done some research it looks like the Pz1s in Spain didn't have the smoke launchers on the rear deck so I've taken that back off.

Thanks for sharing that video Rob - he certainly seems to make it look easy :)

I've tried rolling PE before but like @digger303 said I've had mixed results - probably due to not having the right type of platform underneath.

I might give it another go now I've seen how he did it, but normally for U shaped bends like the exhaust grilles I find a screwdriver with a shaft the right size and just gently bend it around making sure it's lined up properly.

Tomcat's 1/35 Takom Panzer I Negrillo - SCW - Build Part IV

Post by Tomcat64 »

Well... not the most glorious of updates due to some questionable colour matching but here goes...

It all started off so well with a coat of Ultimate Grey primer on both the hull & turret
Image

But then I did some research about the colours that were used and apparently the Vallejo matches for the first two colours were 71.420 (Earth Yellow Nr. 17) and 71.117 Camo Brown... I wasn't convinced about the Earth Yellow when it went down but thought ok - let's see if the camo helps tone it down...
:eeek: Nope - It's horrible...
Image

So I've redone the brown freehand and will find a better shade for the sand colour then start masking again. Will hopefully post an update later this week

In better news the tracks were primed in Ultimate Black, got a basecoat of Black/Brown and were then dry brushed with oily steel
Image

That's all for this weekend's events on this one - hope the garish photo didn't dazzle you too much!
Cheers, Neil

Tomcat's 1/35 Takom Panzer I Negrillo - SCW - Build Part V

Post by Tomcat64 »

So I decided to paint over the mess with more of AKs 3rd Gen colours - I should have taken photos as I was going but basically just kept reworking freehand with the airbrush and Dark Brown, Yellow Brown & Olive Green. Edit: nope they weren't 3rd Gen - they were the previous type of AK paints! But they still sprayed nicely out of the bottle

It's nowhere near perfect but a damned sight better than anything I was going to get flogging the dead horse I created in the first place; and nice to see the red panels for the national insignia & white cross for aircraft recognition survived the debacle :th:
Image

With that done and (more or less) dry I added the wheels & tracks - the drive sprockets don't rotate on these kits as they have locating lugs, but it is possible to manipulate the tracks onto them once the sprockets are in place
Image

And here's everything stacked up - the return rollers still need to be finished & added though
Image

I nearly gave this a miss this evening after the mess from the weekend but really glad I got stuck in and happy enough with the results - onto the exhausts & tools next before decals & a bit of weathering to finish (and hide any future cock ups!)

:cheers2:

Maybe fade in some lighter yellow on the brown sections to create more contrast. Just a thought, not a critique :th:

Cheers mate! I did think about adding some modulation especially on that big front plate, but decided not to push my luck and quietly put down the airbrush and walked away from the scene :)

I'll add some interest there with some dust & streaking instead I think.

    Tomcat's 1/35 Takom Panzer I Negrillo - SCW - Build Part VI

    Post by Tomcat64 »

Just a quick update from this week's efforts :)

The return rollers were finished & added
    Image

And so have all three of the decals... around the back with 20-20 hindsight I should probably have removed the lifting hooks before putting the yellow stripe on... it's a little wonky but I'll live with it
    Image

And up front a slightly thicker yellow stripe as well as the "N" marking on the bow all settled down nicely despite the stripe splitting in half in the water
    Image

Tools & exhausts have been primed and started so hopefully I'll get those moved along & installed this weekend in and around the rugby and other activities :th:

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:

this has come together very nicely and it looks like you got away with one on the stripe. I think the cammo will tone in ok once its had a bit of weathering on top :thumb1:

    Tomcat's 1/35 Takom Panzer I Negrillo - SCW - Build Part VII

    Post by Tomcat64 »

Still happily pottering away at the remaining jobs on this one...

Exhausts painted up with Life Color's rust set - initial coat of dark shadow followed by stippling with base colour & light shadow
    Image

Tools painted up by brush & added with a dab of CA
    Image

And the tool set the other side - the jack assembly was a bit fiddly and needed some sanding & clipping to fit but nothing too taxing
    Image

Manifold covers were shaped, painted & fitted both sides
    Image

Along with the jack block down the back end
    Image

And finally down the front the tow cable was installed, again it was a little fiddly but nothing that couldn't be sorted with a couple of strategic dabs of CA
    Image

Popped the turret on for a look and here it is with all parts installed
    Image

And once again with big brother :)
    Image

Next up is a matt coat followed by some light weathering and any touch ups and it'll be done :)

I don't want to go too heavy with the weathering this time but I'd be really tempted to get this pair again and properly beat them up.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:

    Tomcat's 1/35 Takom Panzer I Negrillo - SCW - Build Part VIII

    Post by Tomcat64 »

Just a quick update from the weekend as I've done some light weathering with oils - basically using MIGs Oil Brushers (dust, summer soil & Starship Grime) along with some Tamiya panel liners to pick out some details.

And I think that's this one done :)
    Image

I'll see if there's any other tweaks I want to do, but otherwise will aim to get out the grown up camera and post the final shots later this week.

Thanks as always for checking in and commenting during the build - I can really recommend this kit to anyone interested in the subject :th:
