1/444 Gato

Post by digger303 »

Ok I've upped my game and decided I will build this sub by Trumpeter.

This is a second hand kit and some parts are off the sprue, but nothing is painted or glued. So if no one objects I shall make some progress on this. No after market just a OB build nothing fancy.
I have a couple of other builds to tidy up first.

I was too tired to paint or do anything fiddly so I did make a small start tonight .
It's a a bit weird...
Image

But it appears to be a straightening/ stiffener for the hull which does have a small bow front to back down it's length.

So I cemented it together and installed it. I did have to remove a little of the cradle it rests in so the hull would close.
The clamps are necessary to straighten the hull and I have them fairly tight.
Image

Even so I'm sure when I go to add the other half of the hull it is going to be a awkward cuss.

I was going to build a sub until I found the kit I'm building instead.
I'm glad someone is showing up to build one! They've always been my favorite ships.

Sweet......can't wait to be finished seeding so I can finish a few things. It's easy when your tired to just glue a few parts together, but painting is a totally different ball game. I always feel like I need at least a free hr to pick up the airbrush.

Nice! We've got a good mix of sea-going subjects already :th:

I know what you mean about having to take a run up at the airbrush though - I'm much happier pottering away with clippers & glue :)

Very interesting. Excuse my ignorance but I am assuming that the mottled look on the box art is the artist's attempt at reflection rather than a cammo scheme?

Yes the boat is depicted under water and that accounts for the jagged edges. I couldn't find this camo by google anywhere. Yet I do remember the navy at least trying it out for use around the islands. More typical I believe was shades of grey and black patterns and even red.

I'm not going to do the camo depicted on the box, but a black and grey which was the more usual.

Happy for you that you've finish your hard work ! Didn't touch it for a long time on my side !! Same for my Mig. Since my last update I only had time to prime the tube at the front. The only thing left for me to do on it. May be today. But I have so much to do around the house before our trip in July. And just finished sanding and staining my mom's patio. If I could squeeze only an hour or two to finish it and take pictures of it. As you can see, that's why I didn't enter in the Maritime GB...even if I received all my extras I had plan for it

Dropped the Pfalz tpday. Broke the tail rudder and under carriage strut....repairable, but it knocked my mojo about.
The Gatto was just to be a quick build and get the kit off my floor.... :D

2 weeks since the last up date. The scale is small, but the subject is large.
Not the best kit around needing a lot of filling marrying the deck to the tube and I'm not a lover of these tiny plastic deck railing. I shouldn't have used TET to glue them in they tend to move when the glue is drying I should have used CA and they are so easy to break. I can't see them lasting. I had to replace one hydroplane as it just disappeared off my desk and nowhere to be found.
Image

I drilled out a lot of holes, broke a few bits and I think the paint may cover them. Thinned the props down a tad.
Image

Not much painting to do now except the masking may take some time.

Looking at the size - if thats 1/144 its scared the hell out of me as regards the 1/72 Type VIIC.
Looking good though Digger - looking forwards to seeing the paint go on.

Scare me too and one section of base coat is on. It's almost the same color as the primer. Just gotta wait a another day before I mask it.

Thanking you kindly for your lovely comments.
The paint was good , but the build result wasn't great and those of keen eyesight will have noticed the missing periscopes, which I managed to break while attempting some better pic's in the garden. Plus a couple of terrible seams and the crooked safety rails.

I don't know why , but I lost all love for this build at about the half way mark

It's a real shame you lost that lovin' feeling for this build as I think it looks great!

There's always going to be things that jump out at you that the rest of us wouldn't pick up though.

It does look great (if a little precarious) up on that fence post though :)
          Cheers, Neil

          Looks just fine, periscopes down

I am waiting for the "after shotgun" photo with her perched up there on the fence post like a fish out of water :pistols:

No wind at that point in the day and I had no where else to perch the blighter.

Not such a silly thought, if I only had a shotgun ( only rifles)

          Thank you
I was so damn careful with it through the whole build and to accidentally brush it while about to set it up for the pic did my head in.
          Cheers to you all. :cheers2:
