Image

Matthew reminded me he made them is 2018 so I am perusing his build

I took Saturday and cleaned up my Lab. Now the booth and desk are too clean to start anything

This is a really fun kit. Are you going with their traditional paint schemes or something different?

OK so started up on BB8
Jagemeister Orange from Splash paints, Aluminum silver from Mr Color and I left the kit's glossy white finish alone

And then, well he kinda just fell together. Super well engineered and organized assembly.

It was all done over a Sunday afternoon, start to finish.

Antennae for BB8 all installed so, Swinging over into the R2D2 side of the build now.
He is going to be blue, silver and white..big surprise
Image
smoothy smooth noggin
Image
Blue is Splash mica blue
Silver is Mr Color aluminum
White is kit sprue colour

I got a finger print into his smooth silver helmet paint when putting the blue bits in. Not sure sure what I will do as of yet :

Nope nope nope. R2 ‘s lid needs to be stripped down and puttied
Image

I am thinking this an older Bandai production as the quality is not anywhere near BB8’s in engineering and location of the sprues
The lid joint is huge as there was an attachment on all four sides right where they join and are visible
So I have added some thin sheet on either side to tighten it up

I broke off one of #37 side grates cutting out the sprue and was being careful using my good Tamiya cutters :bash:
So added more straight styrene to fix it.
Image

Those are some big and very visible sprue attachments :shock:Image

Bb8 I had done in an afternoon

Sanded the R2 helmet, a quick light Ultimate prime and then re spray the mr color aluminum
Image

I love this paint as it flows super smooth, but it rubs off in your fingers so you need to seal it. Every time. Period.
Going to let it cure all night and tomorrow and then I will clear coat it with Furture in the airbrush
I didn’t do this on BB8 but he had much less silver and easier assembly

Well I have to eat a little crow here :shifty:

I was dead wrong about the Bandai R2D2 fitment and engineering…it is top notch

Once I got the metal trashcan’s helmet smoother, painted and properly cleared everything was fine
I was being lazy and not putting a protective clear acrylic over the silver. Once I did, it allowed me to push the parts together properly.
Much better head the second time

The Splash blue may have been a bit hot and warped the surface just a little. But still pretty good for no primer

They both look great.

Its amazing to think how much character both of these droids were imbued with by the film makers.

Both were brave, fiercely loyal, sassy and funny. The affection for them among fans is greater than for some of the human characters! Just watch reaction videos of The Mandolorian and see people tearing up when R2 turns up in episode 8 of the second season.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.
