Tomcat's 1/16 Das Werk StuG iii Stugosaurus

Post by Tomcat64 »

So as not to leave Herr Oberst Stokesy alone on the battlefield I'll be sending in reinforcements also in the shape of Das Werk's 1/16 StuG iii ausf G... :cheers2:
Introduction
Sturmgeschutz III Ausf.G Fruhe Version
Here's a quick overview of the type.

Originally intended for infantry support duties, Germany’s Sturmgeschutz (assault gun) and abbreviated StuG III first appeared in combat during 1940. It had the durable Panzer III chassis with a completely new superstructure. To keep the vehicles profile as low as possible, the revolving turret was eliminated and the short barrelled 75mm L/24 gun was mounted directly onto the hull. As it was mainly intended for close fire support for the Wehrmacht, it was used as self-propelled artillery against the opposing enemy’s strategic points. However, when the German forces encountered the Russian KV and T-34 tanks on the Eastern front, the situation abruptly changed. To cope with this Russian tank threat, the Germans were forced to upgrade their existing weapons systems. The G-Type StuG III built from late 1942 onwards, used a more powerful, long barrel 75mm L/48 gun. The early G-Type had a square shaped gun mantlet. The superstructure was redesigned and an MG34 machine gun with shield, commander’s vision cupola and smoke dischargers were added. The thin steel plates, known as Schurzen (skirts) were attached to the sides of the hull beginning in the spring of 1943. The type-42 assault gun mounted a 105mm howitzer on the StuG III chassis and was developed to fulfil the StuG III’s original role of infantry support. Incorporating several minor changes about 7,800 G-Type StuG IIIs were produced.

For further reading there's plenty of information available at the excellent Tank Encyclopedia

I'll also be using this book along with several others for reference purposes :)

There are four of this one included mainly for the wheels & suspension

There are six of this one... tracks... lots n lots of tracks...

The instruction booklet - we'll be visiting each section in turn once the build actually starts
Image

There are also a couple of bags with PE, wire, aluminium barrel & clear parts which will stay unbagged for now.

I've picked up the same crew figures as Stokesy but have different stowage so I'll be adding fuel cans to the rear deck
Image
I had intended to get started over the weekend but managed to distract myself so hopefully I can start the build soon.

Hopefully it'll be interesting to compare how we tackle the same kit :cheers2:

Sorry about that - bit of a private joke between myself and Stokesy... although a 1/16 dinosaur would be pretty cool... and HUGE :eeek:

Looks like a great kit. I like the figures and stowage too as it will bring the large beast to life.

When you both are done are you going to have a battle of the Stug's, kind of like Godzilla versus (??), just kidding.

If you look, there are other companies making 1/16 WW2 armor details, like Marauder, etc. Sometimes those little things are worth it, depending on what your trying to achieve. 120mm figures will fit 1/16 scale well too....

I was going to get this one too, but my budget went to the Andy's Hobbies 1/16 Sherman. Watching your excellent builds may have me get a piece of German armor too. Looking forward to the build....

I think we're ok... from my limited digging on the subject I think they started slapping on the Zim in Nov/Dec '43 and all bar one of the five schemes in the kit are from mid-43... the only potential contender would be the one listed as Monte Cassino in Feb '44

Dodged a mine there :)

Thanks for the tip about the Marauder stuff Ben... I'm also thinking about maybe trying to find some appropriately scaled Grenadiers to ride on the rear deck...

Look for 120mm WW2 German Resin figures and you will see them specifically for your Stug. I know AliExpress carries them but I'm not entirely sure of AliExpress's reliability, perhaps good perhaps questionable. I'm sure you can locate them from a more local or trusted supplier.

Tomcat's 1/16 Das Werk StuG iii Stugosaurus - Build Part I

    Post by Tomcat64 »

My section of "A Tale of Two StuGs" started this weekend as well :)

The first thing I noticed was how hefty the bathtub hull felt after working on some 1/72 kits and I was intrigued enough that I actually went and weighed it & for those interested in such things it came in at 184g (6.5oz).

I decided early on to focus on the interior first so will be going off-piste with regards to the instructions; my thinking here was that I wanted to be able to paint up the internal components without risking knocking off any external greeblies - hopefully this won't bite me later on...

Anyways... here's section 1 of the instructions :)
    Image

    And the installed components
    Image

Just a quick note here in that I installed parts B32 & C12 onto the hull first and then added parts A19 afterwards... this went ok when A19 was being attached to B32 but did cause a minor snag with C12 in that A19 fouled slightly & needed the rear locating pin to be reduced to slide it into place...
    Image

With that done on both sides I moved onto sections 2 & 3 to install the torsion bars
    Image

Here's a bathtub full of them...
    Image

There were some mould lines on the torsion bars on my kit - they wouldn't be visible once installed but I sanded them off anyways in case they affected tolerances later in the build
    Image

So sticking to my internals theme for the weekend we hop ahead to sections 13 & 14
    Image

The rear firewall slotted nicely into place
    Image

I did have a minor technical cock-up on the drive shaft housing... there are some fairly hefty attachment points on chamferred edges and I wasn't paying attention when sanding some of them down so ended up "biting" the edges a little in places
    Image

Nothing that couldn't be addressed with a swipe of filler & a little more careful sanding - here it is installed
    Image

    Sections 15 & 16
    Image

I built up the front armour & inspection hatches as the undersides make up part of the interior
    Image

The hinges on the hatches are designed to allow them to open but since there's nothing underneath they were subsequently cemented in the closed position
    Image

Sections 17 & 18 give us the final components of the lower interior
    Image

Here they all are in place - it's a bit of a faff to get the deck plates installed but the all sit nicely when done :)
    Image

All the major components are just dry fitted and come apart for painting
    Image

Unless I've missed it there are no paint call outs for the interior so I'll just be going with ivory for the walls & fittings & oxide primer for the floor & deck plates.

That's where I got to this weekend - this really is a great kit so far and I'm definitely taking my time to enjoy the build

    Thanks for looking :cheers2:

    I agree with Paul...

The details and fit throughout really shows in 1:16. I like your interior color choices too. I've even noticed some nice detail in the molding in areas that will not be seen, that is a good indication of a nice mold.

Have you already determined the exterior camouflage scheme?

After watching these 1:16 builds, I can't wait to start my 1:16 Sherman E8. Yours and Stokesys builds are really priming me up.

    Keep up the great work.

Thanks for checking in guys :cheers2:

Regarding the exterior scheme I'm probably leaning towards the Grossdeutschland one from Kursk as I've recently read an account about that battle; but to be honest aside from the Monte Cassino scheme there's not a lot to choose between them.

Tomcat's 1/16 Das Werk StuG iii Stugosaurus - Build Part II

    Post by Tomcat64 »

Sticking with my "plan" of ignoring the instructions and building up sub-assemblies I decided to make a start on the gun this weekend

This starts at section 34 of the instruction book
    Image

A quick note here in that E19 & G5 don't quite mate correctly - according to my research the indicated gap shouldn't be there so I drilled out the locating holes a little to settle everything in
    Image

I also spent a little time dealing with EPMs that will probably never be seen again - but that's as close to OCD as I get
    Image

On the subject of EPMs, my H sprue seems to be fairly well represented with them, as well as ejector pegs & seam lines; nothing major but definitely needing some tidying not evident on the other frames I've used so far... I've also had to check & make sure that "moulding" seams aren't actually cast weld-seams and meant to be there
    Image

Anyway - here are all the bits from that section assembled :)
    Image

    Onto section 35...
    Image

    The subsections assembled
    Image

And installed - this was one of those jobs that really needed more than two hands to try and get everything lined up
    Image

Finally for this weekend section 36
    Image

The attach point of E29 to E14 was a bit of a struggle and if I did it over I'd probably start here before attaching anything else as I needed to do a little strategic trimming
    Image

But eventually everything was persuaded into position and it's starting to take shape nicely
    Image

Here it is stored in the bath-tub :)
    Image

That's all for now - this is definitely a slow & steady build for me and despite some clean-up and minor fit issues (which might be my own fault) I'm still really enjoying this one :)

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:

Really nice progress so far Neil, a very tidy build.
Are you planning to fully build the kit before painting?
Did you find any issue when you test fitted the gun to its mount in section 39? I have read that this area can be troublesome?

Thanks for dropping in Keith - I've not permanently attached the gun to the mount as yet, but yes it is a bit of a faff from my dry-fit tests as you're effectively working a bit blind. I'm contemplating adding some sort of "spike" to help alignment.

Oh and I'm planning on painting up the interior before finishing the running gear & rear deck etc.
    Cheers, Neil

Tomcat's 1/16 Das Werk StuG iii Stugosaurus - Build Part III

    Post by Tomcat64 »

Bimey - was it really January the last time I played with this? I really struggled for bench & browsing time in February but finally managed to get a decent session at the bench on Saturday...

Section 37 involves the parts for the gunsight assembly
    Image

Here it is assembled - I needed to do some creative sanding to get the three sub-assemblies together
    Image

And installed (clear part will be added after painting
    Image

The same section also included the seat
    Image

This was built up but not installed as I know that would only get knocked off during painting
    Image

Onto section 38 - my intent here was to build up the assemblies and just keep them dry fitted for now
    Image

    Looks ok from here...
    Image

But... whilst clipping one of the A11s off the sprue it somehow pinged up over my right shoulder... I heard the clatter of it landing somewhere behind me, but damned if I can find it! :bash: So I resorted to some creative bodging but this required the mantlet thingy to get properly installed - I've buried the bodge down the bottom so hopefully it won't show up when everything is buttoned up
    Image

Aside from that the muzzle brake & barrel went together ok, although some sanding & filling was required on the brake
    Image

With that done I skipped back to section 14
    Image

And installed the remaining plates along the hull-side as I think they'll be useful in supporting the fenders & casemate
    Image

So that's all for now - I'll hopefully crack on with the radios & casemate interior next so I can throw some paint at the bits I've got assembled so far & then move onto the running gear.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:
    Cheers, Neil

    Stugs! Stugs everywhere!

Great to see you back on the project Squire. I knocked ny gunsight off yesterday when removing the roof panel. Much faffery ensued! I'm looking forward to you painting the interior.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

What was the issue with the gun sight? The instructions look reasonably straight forward

Ref the gun sight, the parts fit on mine wasn't great and then I had a major faff getting sub-assembly C attached to B - it's like a wedge & groove thing and needed adjusting before it would sit properly.

I think the interior scheme will be similar to yours with ivory walls & roof plates and red-brown floor plates... hopefully I can start spraying soon :)
    Cheers, Neil

Okay, thanks for letting me know, I will keep an eye out for that.

Yes, I guess there aren't too many options for the interior colours, I used AK real colour Elfenbein RC046 and Rotbrün RC066 as the main colours, these were lightened with a "cream" colour. The shading was done with Alclad sepia.
The floor plates were sprayed silver and then I sprayed chipping medium before adding the Rotbrün and then "chipping" with water and a stiff brush.

Tomcat's 1/16 Das Werk StuG iii Stugosaurus - Build Part IV

    Post by Tomcat64 »

Still struggling for bench time but have been pottering along throughout March - I'll be honest & say I thought I'd already posted the first part of this update a couple of weeks back but apparently not...

So let's start with sections 19 & 20 and build up the fenders
    Image

Except for the tools which will be added later
    Image

Although I did put the jack together - actually found this a little fiddly as there didn't seem to be too much in the way of positive fittings for the brackets but that just might have been because I wasn't installing it onto the fender
    Image

Sections 22-25 see us put together the majority of the casemate and radios etc
    Image

So here we go for the outside
    Image

And on the inside - not much to show here but there were some EPMs to try & sort out since they would potentially be on show if I leave the roof removeable
    Image

Sections 26 & 27 have us attach the casemate & internals to the fenders
    Image

Which I only dry-fitted for now just to check how it would all go together & thanks to a tip from @stokesy44 I attached the shelves inside the casemate rather than onto the fenders
    Image

I did have a slight panic when I spotted this gap thinking I'd missed something as this looked most un-German but having checked references there is definitely a gap there...
    Image

Ok - fast forward a few weeks and skipping an episode where I managed to clog up both airbrushes with Vallejo Elfenbein which I put down to old paint and ordered some more which sprayed with no issue... The interior has had its basic colours added over a coat of Ultimate grey primer. The deck plating is AK Interactive red oxide primer. There's also a bit of a mess at the bottom of the cartridge catcher basket where I cocked up trying to fix some late-spotted EPMs in hard to reach areas...
    Image

And as mentioned previously I added a short length of styrene to act as a guide for getting the gun in place
    Image

Finally up to date and this weekend started with painting up the radio sets
    Image

And installing them - fit wasn't great & I could have taken more time to resolve that but just wanted to crack on given how little will be seen...
    Image

    Here's the other side
    Image

Added some basic chipping to weather this up a bit (yep casemate is still only dry fitted at this point)
    Image

I'll let that dry and then give it some sort of interior wash to finish dirtying it up
    Image

That's all for now - it's been good to get back to the bench and with a four-day weekend coming up for Easter hopefully I can get on with this some more.

    Thanks for looking :cheers2:
    Cheers, Neil

Really nice progress, the paint looks very nice.
I decided to fit my casemate before adding the fenders, as this allowed a lot easier access to get tamiya extra thin cement around the base of it to get a secure glue joint.
The fenders went on afterwards with out any issues try test fitting this way and see what you think?
Looking forward to seeing your next update.

@Mpfiend I'll take a proper look at test fittings the fenders & superstructure when I bring all the subassemblies together, but from the dabbling I've done so far I think your suggested method will work for me too :cheers2:

Tomcat's 1/16 Das Werk StuG iii Stugosaurus - Build Part V

    Post by Tomcat64 »

Well, having been put to shame by the speed with which Kampfgruppe Stokesy managed to deploy their StuG to the field it's time I gave this some serious attention.

So I gave myself a decent talking to, and being me, I answered myself back... but in any case I'm happier building than painting so having been bogged down with low mojo for a while I decided what I needed was a session cutting & gluing plastic and as a result I've had the best session at the bench that I've had in a good few weeks :)

First up I decided to build the rear deck since that was effectively a self contained unit
    Image

This did involve a little painting as I gave the internals of the air intakes a quick blast of dark yellow before assembling things; one quick update is that I'll need to remove & relocate the gun cleaning rods based on what I've finally decided to put on the deck. Other than that the only thing I did find is that it was easier to connect the hinge parts (e.g. A28 & A23) off the kit before adding them to the deck & relevent covers.
    Image

Ok... now a slight interlude as I picked up a couple of 3d printed figures at a model show yesterday - here's how they looked initially
    Image

And again once their scaffolding had been removed (still some final tidying to do); the commander figure is a little tight fitting into the cupola but there's enough flex in his legs to get him to fit :th:
    Image

Ok...back to the StuG and I thought I'd tackle the rear end
    Image

Got this far and saw that it involved connecting to bits of the suspension
    Image

So decided to scamper back to section 4 to bolt those bits on at last
    Image

And that's where I got to...
    Image

So next session I'll carry on with the suspension before switching back to the rear hull plates & fittings... unless I skip over to the fighting compartment roof :)

Anyways - as I mentioned at the top that's the best session I've had for a long while so hopefully it'll keep moving now.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:
    Cheers, Neil

very nice progress, the figures look interesting.
with regards to the suspension, you may want to think about leaving the suspension arms off until you have permanently fixed the casemate to the lower hull, this is so they don't get in the way if you need to clamp the two halves together.

Tomcat's 1/16 Das Werk StuG iii Stugosaurus - Build Part VI

      Post by Tomcat64 »

I've actually managed to make some mid-week progress this week... don't remember the last time that happened!

Anyways just a quick update as I focussed on the roof of the fighting compartment

Here's the assembled bits - following a tip from @Stokesy44 I've left the vision blocks out for now as they can be inserted from the bottom later

And dry fitted to the superstructure with the figures in place... the commander is really a struggle to get in & out so I might resort to chopping him off at the knees to make things a little easier

That's all for now build-wise but I did also receive this for the rear deck so I'll definitely need to relocate the gun-cleaning rods

      Thanks for looking :cheers2:
