Mitsubishi A6M5c "Zero" in 1:48 from TAMIYA

Post by MatiasLuge »

Along with the Spitfire, Messerschmitt Bf 109, P-51 Mustang and IL-2 Sturmovik, the Zero is arguably one of the most iconic aircraft of World War II. With 11,000 built, it is the most widely built Japanese aircraft of the war and, as a result of its media presence, the best known. The aircraft was highly maneuverable and had an unusually long range for fighters, but this came at the cost of sacrificing protective features such as armor or self-sealing fuel tanks, which is why it was considered extremely vulnerable. Here is a short clip from the almost forgotten Spielberg film "Empire of the Sun". 11-year-old Jim (Christian Bale) lives with his family in Shanghai and is very fascinated by flying - when he sees Zeros over the city, he constantly dreams of seeing or even touching such a plane up close. The pilots also have a kind of legendary status with him because of their oft-reported bravery.
When the Japanese reach Shanghai, Jim is separated from his parents and interned in a labor camp - which means the greatest misfortune for most people, but makes Jim's dream come true:
