The approximately 500 Hurricanes delivered by September 1939 formed the backbone of the British fighter squadrons at the outbreak of war. During the Battle of Britain in late summer and fall of 1940, Royal Air Force (RAF) fighter pilots fought against the German Luftwaffe over southern England. Two-thirds of the pilots flew the robust and reliable Hawker Hurricane, which stood in the shadow of the well-known newer Supermarine Spitfire. In 1940, 55% of British air victories were credited to the Hurricane.
