For the Car Modeller

Post by NoelSmith »

If thinking about scratch building cars, The Complete Car Modeller books 1 and 2 by Gerald Wingrove are really worth seeking out. They come up second hand now and again but are very comprehensive books about making model cars by traditional engineering model making techniques.
I learned a lot from these books and adapted many of the techniques for using plastic for my scratch builds. Chassis members from Plastruct extrusions and plastic card for example. Also where the book describes soldering and brazing, on plastic I used liquid cement.

Very good books where Gerald's techniques are well described and inspirational.

There are indeed some tasty kits being released having just started to build Italeri's Type 35B Bugatti released a couple of years ago.

The books I referred to are aimed at scratch builders more so than kit modellers. But having said that, a number of scratch building techniques could be applicable to modellers wishing to upgrade or replace kit parts on their models for that bit of extra realism.
