Mark's tiger 1 built
this will be my built of the hobby boss tiger in 1:16 scale
i want it to look like one of the last tiger that had zimmerit
i already have some aftermarket stuff like mg barrels clamps and clasps for the tools and the zimmerit set from atak
although i made a little misstake ( i got the tamiya set) but i will make it fit ......i think
but i want to know if there were tiger with zimmerit applied during the battle of the bulge
i do know that the appliecation of zimmerit stopped some months before the beginning of that campaign
but i think that there where some tanks left that had this coating
i also want to build a small dio for this monster (if you cam call that small) mainly because i already build several figures in this scale but they al resemble winter personel so thats why i want a b.o.b. tiger
so i anyone has tip im happy to hear them
ALSO i want to thank hamilkar barkas and coen for putting the reviews and build progress on youtube ,thats why i bought this tank
pictures will follow as soon as possible(somewhere this week)
greetings Mark

Re: my tiger 1 built
Mark... why don't you join the buddy build with Hamilkar, Pedro, and I?
I'm more than certain that they wouldn't mind.
If you have any questions or trouble along the way we'd be more than happy to give you a hand.
As for Tiger I's with zimmerit during the BOB. There were only about 100 available for the entire offensive and they were a mix of a Mid and Late model Tiger Is.
The mid productions (rubber tyres) had zimmerit as did the late productions... mostly.
I've seen a few shots of late tanks that had it and some that didn't but they may have just been bad pictures. Tiger production and zimmerit use stopped near the same time.
I hope that helped Mark.
Give some thought about joining in with Michael, Pedro and I.

Re: my tiger 1 built
so as promised my pics of the tiger progress even if its not that much

this is my aa mg34 for the turret roof ooh yeah before anyone points it out i know the barrel isnt really straight on the gun (i did not glue it yet)

as you can see i have travelled to mount roadwheel

because i bought the tamiya zimmerit kit (why bother to look what you buy)
i had to cut the inside part of the gunshield and that left a gap

and this is the solution i should mention i made this pic before the final fitting

this is the final fit just needed a little sanding to make it flush with the kit part
so i hope you like it so far ihave some other thing to do on this beast like cutting off the side fenders and the turretbin to make the zimmerit fit on the tank but i guess that will be a big job but thats for another day
so if you want to share your thoughts and ideas on this subject please let me know it might be very helpful
cheers Mark

Re: my tiger 1 built
I don't remember if you had mentioned it or not, what did you use to make the zimmerit Mark?
From what I can see of it, it looks fantastic.
You should turn the mallet around and take a shot of it. I'd love to see how it turned out.
Hamilkar is putting zimmerit on his and I'm sure that he'd love to see it to.

Re: my tiger 1 built
hi to all
well Coen the zimmerit is from atak
i have tryed to make it in the past but i don't have the patience for it
plus i have good experiences with atak zimmerit (looks good and easy to damage, the kind of damage you want that is)
but there is a small part that i do have to make my self because there is no part for the upper glacis(that flat part with the big shovel)as i believe its called further its just placing kit parts and making them fit

Re: my tiger 1 built
Hey Mark,
Thanks... I've heard of Atak but I haven't used it my self.
Most Tigers didn't have zimmerit on the upper glacis plate. So, depending on the subject that you're modelling, you wouldn't need it. So I guess that's a good thing eh?

Hey Mark,
It looks like you just clicked the wrong box to copy the link while you were on photobucket.
Take a quick look at this http://intscalemodeller.com/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=22
That should help ya fix it up.

Great updates Mark, you will really like the Aber accessories as the detail is unbelievable, i think the additional tow hook is a great idea and will add the same to my own, plus a great job on the convoy lamp holder it really looks fantastic.
looking forward to seeing how the skirts go together for you.

Re: my tiger 1 built
I was tempted to replace the side fenders on mine, but the costs of that on top of all the other AM sets that I got for her made it too expensive.
I left mine on but damaged the hell out of them.
I'll be leaving the front mud guards on mine off. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with the rear ones yet.
You've made me feel guilty now Mark, now I want to go work on mine. haha.
Great progress you've made Dude, that zimmerit looks fantastic. The mantlet especially!!!

Re: my tiger 1 built
thanks for the comments guys
and Coen your right on the fenders they cost quit a lot i believe about 40 euro's but i had to have them since i cut off the originals to.make room for the zimmerit i had to cut it exactly to size if i left them on
now currently i'm building the ammo set, looks great you won't believe the size of those things (no really you just want too use them in a real gun they that big) and for the box its all cut to size and you get nails lots and lots of nails but its all for the greater good
i will keep you all updatet on this monster project and i'll be seeing you around
cheers Mark
PS Jaycub i dont know if your building this aswell but if so maybe you can.join in just ask Coen thats how i got in

Re: my tiger 1 built
i managed to make some progress on this build last night and this morning
i started with ammo and the ammo box from aber and this is what i've got so far

many lose strips of wood looks nice but you have to sort them out first (the 1:1 scale drawings help with this task)
should come in handy

the ammo it self you get 3 and they are in 3 parts

the actual size of the rounds in cm so roughly 2.2 inch

the box before painting

also i started on the front plate of the upper hull
now for this part i do have some problems : the mg mount looks like crap (pardon my french)
and the drivers scopes need to be drilled out
further more the ring on the outside of the mg mount was turned in at the bottom and after a look at a dragon tiger i've built it should be more straight so out comes the putty
if you want an ammo box or just ammo for a tiger1 in this scale i can recommend the aber kit its great the nails are not that good (for me atleast) but it goes together well and the rounds themselves are awesome
so thats all folks bye

Super updates Mark, im not modelling the hobby boss kit, im using the Asitam upper and lower hull and the Aber sets, it's a pain buying them one or two at a time, mostly it is an all metal build i just want to add character.

Re: my tiger 1 built
hello y'all
and
to my new update
so the last couple of days i've been working on several parts of the tiger 1
i started on the front plate where i needed to use putty because i didn't like the seamline on the mg mount

next up was the ball mount it self i went and cut off the socket for the plastic mg barrel and glued 3 discs of styrene on the left over plate
after that was done i drilled out 2 holes and placed in 2 tubes 1 original and 1 was drilled to make the aber mg fit and then just cover it up in putty (i had a photo of it but you can't see anything but a white blob so i'll spare that one
then i worked on the aber ammo box
it goes together well and looks nice i just can't work the provided nails so i just drilled little holes to make it look like there could be a nail in side and the painting

for the weathering i just sanded it very lightly i'll be adding dust when i finnish it with the tank
then it was time to fit the ball mount and the front section to the hull

of course its now time to do zimmerit on the entire hull
now these are five parts in total and fit well perfect

i will be adding some more damage later
then i thought lets just fill the trach ejector pins cant be that bad right

i know i did only 2 row on the outside but i think y can't even see the others so i don't bother about them only sanding them for now
then i got to one of the biggest jobs of the build
removing the turret bin but i got it done

i will make a new wall on both the turret and the bin
then make the zimmerit on the turret and place the whole lot back in its place
but thats all for now
see you next time Mark

Re: my tiger 1 built
We should rename this build to the great hobby boss hack and slash haha. These are some massive reconstructions Mark. Taking off that turret bin must have been tricky. Nice work buddy.
I'm planning on removing the outer wall of the bin and replacing it with either sheet lead I or copper.
Nice fix on the MG ball mount.

Re: my tiger 1 built
well the removal of the turretbin is.not.that hard you just need a whole lot of patience and about 2 xacto blades as they will become less sharp
but i think i will be rebuilding the bin and.turret walls later today then i can place the last parts of the zimmerit and then its photo etch time with the fenders or the texture applicatiom on the cleam parts of metal dont know yet
untill next time

Re: my tiger 1 built
thanks Hamilkar
and yep i think that a project this size and scale needs the best (within reason that is) now i sure i could have rebuilt some parts like the fenders myself with some trail and error but this is also my first build in the 1:16 scale with the exeption of a couple of figures but i'm planning a diorama with this tank so i will be using those figures in it as well and i'm ordering about 5 or 6 figures and some equipment from verlinden productions for some final detailing of the tank and the figures but i think i will be building the dio from scrath as i never seen building in this scale in the modelling shops
and now for difrent :when will you be picking up your tiger build love to see the other tigers coming along as well
talk to.you later.and a good day to you sir

Gettin' a LOT of inspiration here guys!!, I'm kind of following all three builds, as I'm a complete novice to armor, but I lost my marbles and just HAD to buy the 1/16 "Tiger" when I saw it. Trying to get as many tips and tricks as I can before I take on this beast !!!

P.S. - I'm from the U.S. -- can anyone give me a lead as to where I might find a "barrel" set for this kit??

Hey Jim... good on ya buddy. Join us if you like.
There's no hurry so you can join in and work as fast or slow as you like.
These are big models and they take a bit of extra work to go together, so slow is the name of the game.

Re: my tiger 1 built
hi Jim
i got all the pe from a german company called mcm marketing but the down side is i got it all on conventions so i don't know anything about the shipping cost or if they ship it over to the US but they only sell the brands that i'm using so they are well stocked on those parts and that should save some time on delivering them
but if you want to use a zimmerit set make sure you have the one for the hobby boss kit cause i'm using the tamiya set and it is a lot of work making it fit and for the barrel you could check Coen's sites cause i used the kit barrel
so good luck on your build and do join in should be fun and thats what its all about
see ya

Here is the muzzle brake Jim
http://www.axels-modellbau-shop.de/kata ... :1327.html
You will have to file down the connector a bit so it fits properly
Here is the barrel.
http://www.axels-modellbau-shop.de/kata ... I::33.html
Use original barrel to guide you as to how it sits in the mantlet sleeve.

Re: my tiger 1 built
i have a little update on the big tiger
it's not much but this is because i wanted to make room on my bench so i finished off 3 other builds this weekend but i'm back on the tiger and this is what i've got

so i got all the zimmerit on the turret and as you can see there is a gap on the back
but a little filler and a toothpick should fix that
also i need to make a lifting pin on tyhe back of the turret as this is missing
and here are my figures that i already have but do note they are only painted and not yet weathered

so i hope this keeps you all up to date for now
all comments are welcome
talk to you later Mark

Re: my tiger 1 built
That's all great work Mark. Building these big buggers is real work sometimes.
I have a crew of four that I want to put in mine. All the hatches are sealed... So I have to remove them all and find replacements that don't cost $45.
The holidays are coming and that money is for gifts
Jim, I hear you buddy, all the after market parts for these monsters are pricey. I've had to scratch a few things off my list because of the prices.

Re: my tiger 1 built
so this should be another update on the tiger
now i didn't do that much on it
but i have a real good reason and that is
this got in the way and beer doesn't help my building skills a lot
and i finish 3 other builds that i was working on and that were standing on my bench
so now i have room to work
and this is what i did

i made the headlight and replaced the strap on the back side of it
also i added 6 small pieces of styrene to replicate the screws holding the front and back together

next up was the antenna the point about this is that the aber antenna is for the tamiya kit so it's just the antenna and not the mount for the antenna but it's a easy fix with a piece of tube and some flat parts

and then there was everybody's favorite task : mr surfacer
its dries fast and applies easy but man you can get stoned from this stuff really what a smell i almost forgot about that after 3 years not using it but it's back
and that's all i can do for now although i also got to work on the side and front fenders but i need some materials before i can go any further on those
so let me know what you think and talk to you next time

Massive progress Mark... That Mr Surfacer is nasty stuff bud.
There's a vid of my using it on my 1/16th Tiger and you can hear me getting funky as I work.
At the end of the vid I'm talking about poop and books I think.

Re: my tiger 1 built
hi and
to a little update on my hobby boss 1:16 tiger 1
i know it doesn't look like much but believe me it's quite a lot of work doing the side fenders in a PE set
this is because they are too big for my bending pliers and i don't own a bending tool since the prices on those things are insane (plus i wounld need the biggest one i think)
but this is what i came up with and for the first time it fits in 1 photo

the reason that they are still laying around is that i thinkl the fit on the tank will be kind of fragile since each piece fits on 4 1mm square blocks on the tank and i have the zimmerit on there aswell so so i want to reinforce the upper part of the fenders by placing a styrene stip in between each hole so i can glue it to the hull on a larger surface
i would need a 0.7 or 0.8 mm strip witch of course i don't have (yet)
so tomorrow i'll go to the hobby store and building this monster shall continue
see y'all later

yeah i will leave the side fenders of for now because i think they are kind of fragile
but i have the stuff i need to compleet the rest of the build
also i got me a pair of group built subjects so that will take up some time but most things i do on the tiger needs to cure for 24 hours ao that leaves me with plenty of time for all the.builts

hi Tom
good luck with the fenders if you use the aber ones
they are pure horror, horror i tell you
naaah just kidding
they build pretty easy but do take up a massive amount of time i worked on the bolts and the blocks on the vehicle itself for about 4 hours my tip would be to take your time with te cutting from the sprue/sheet and fold carefully but they look great i think atleast
but i will be reinforceing them on the inside to give them a bigger surface to glue
i'll be hearimg from ya
cheers Mark

Re: my tiger 1 built
so here is just a little update on the tiger since i have done that much on it the last week or so
i have my styrene that i needed and made the supports on the side fenders as you can see here

the i went at it on the turret bin and i have tried it with lead and brass to replace the outer panel and it can not be called a succes so i spare you the photo's
the lead folded under its own weight and the brass is just a pain in the behind to work with
so i think i will just sand down the inside of the bin and damage it that way
also there have to be some rivets on it (don't know how many i don't count them)
so i can work on those aswell
i dont have a punch and die set since these things are to expensive in my opinion
but i have another way on how i can make them
i use a sheet of aluminium and drilled a hole in it the same size as i want the rivet
then take a piece of old sprue ( cut it straight)
heat that up and press it on the hole while holding the plate in your hand
this way it will form a long rivet that you can cut off an glue in place
so that is what i will be up to
see you next time
