Trumpeter 1/32 Bf 109F-4/Trop

Post by wbill76 »

Due to losing a bet with a friend of mine over Christmas, the price of that bet was building an aircraft in 1/32 of my choice in 2014. I managed to snag the Trumpeter 1/32 kit #02293 on sale for a good price so gave it a whirl. Built OOB with the help of some Eduard pre-cut masks for the canopy, finished with Model Master enamels (mostly), and then weathered using home-made washes and a little touch of pigments for the landing gear since it's a DAK aircraft. I chose Marseille's 'Yellow 14' markings from the finishing guide. This is the first aircraft I've built and completed in over a decade so was quite the experience. Enough talk, here's the finished pics after the last touches were added today.

Are those rivets on the kit as standard or did you rivet the kit yourself. I might have to buy this kit. :thumb2:

That's what comes molded on the kit. Trumpeter did a fine job in that department IMHO...the only downside is that it literally took hours to get all that nice detail to pop out with the wash application process because there are sooooo many of them! :D

In that case you may need a camel with the tracking ability of a Basset Hound. It was left in the Gobi desert during a low tide. Not so far from the tumble weeds going up stream. Close to the dunes, that I accidentally thought was Camber beach.

I was sooo tempted to leave one of the engine panels open as well as the canopy but then I realized how difficult it would be to keep it intact once finished due to my limited display options so they both got closed up. Trumpeter provides you with a lot of great detail on it for sure. Thanks for the comments!

Exceptional work on this one Bill! I've come to admire your armor builds through the years (when I used to frequent armorama) so I can tell you it's nice to see you do aircraft. Same spectacular results!

Very nice clean build mate!

How did You do the panel lines (wash?)
Very nice and tidy result, as in perfectly highlighted panels/rivetlines without any mess.
The decals are also very good, even from the distance in the photos you can clearly see all the surface detail underneath.
I like to "grime it up" but love different styles. Really like the subtle approach on the weathering.

You have achieved a great averall quality and harmony with this one.
Very nice to look at!!! :th:

Great work!

Thanks Patrick, appreciate the comments! The panel lines were done by applying a modified pin wash to the panel and rivet lines. I say 'modified' as it's kind of a hybrid between a 'sludge' wash and a true 'pin' wash where you touch each and ever rivet independently. I then used clean thinner and a 10/0 pointed brush and very carefully removed the excess wash from the lines and rivets to get the look you see. I won't lie to you, it took several hours spread out over multiple days but achieved a very nice result that I couldn't get with the standard 'sludge' type of approach. ;)

Glad you like how it turned out!

Nice work mate, you should continue with 109s. I spent 2 years hyper-focusing on 109s, and there are 2 minor inaccuracies in this kit. first one is the 2 small air vents on the right side of the nose, which were only present on the G-2 and latter varients.
the second thing that i couldent stop myself from fixing was the landing gear bays. Trumpeter moulded the squared off landing gear wells, which, were not on the F-4. funnily enough, the F-4 was the only 109 that had circles for landing gear bays. Trumpeter, u so silly. Other than those things, the kit is an amazing one. Dont lets this detract form the build tho, i just addore the 109, and unless someone knows what theyre looking at, they wont know. i dont mean to be a rivet counter, but i am right now..... :th: no harm, just trying to give some constructive criticism. The paint job is amazing, nice work on the weathering, and that was the same colour scheme i made mine in! love the work, want to see what else you do!

cheers mate love the work, looks beautiful! :cheers2:
