great tip for the rivets Mark and i cheated with the side skirts i bought the blocks instead of using the styrene that i had planned to-do.. i bought the extras from a German company, i must take a leaf out of Lee's book and keep my wallet tucked away.

great to deal with but a bit awkward for the non German speakers such as myself :(

hi guys (and girls should you be here aswell)
so a little update on the big tiger
i've been working on it for a while since i found a new burst of building mojo on it
i been busy with the big pile of photo etch mainly and a bit of scratch building
and this is what i did
Image

Image

so the turret bin has most work done to it
i sanded down a big portion of the inside with a dremel tool
made some new bin covers since the old ones where to short in my opinion
and it has some shrapnel damage to the right side and the rightside of the big surface
also i did a part of the rivets on the upper part

Image
then i made the third lifting pin on the back part of the turret since this was not in the kit

of course the PE had to be done aswell so i got going on the front fenders
Image
the right hand side with the side plate folded up

Image
the left hand side (drivers side)
these parts take up about 5 to 6 hours to make so if you get them i would say take your time (and i'm not that good with PE : )
i did put the turret bin back in it's place but seem to forgotten to take a photo
but that will come some time later
so that's all for now
see ya

To-date that is the best front fender i have seen as others tend to over heat when annealing the brass and they turn black and ugly, i really like the stowage bin and the work you have done there, this is turning out to be a great project and the scratch built turret bin doors look great.

so here i have the missing photo of the tiger

Image
as you can see i added parts like the connecting brackets to the turret and the clasps on the bin covers
so there is not that much to do on the turret just finnishing the rivets
building the periscopes for the turret roof and the cupola
and placeing the lifting pins on the sides
and before i forget placeing the mg mount on the cupola
so thats all for now have a nice day and happy modelling

thanks guys
i'm expecting the last ordered part to arrive within the next day or the day after (just before christmas) ans then i will be complete the buildimg part of this kit
because after a little inspection of a smaller tiger 1 i build before (a dragon and those are good tiger kits) i found several parts missing in thos kit so after some tried and failed scratch building i took the easy way and simply ordered the missing parts and some other stuff
but i will show those when i have them and then there will be an update aswell because most of the parts are things that injust need to glue in place
see ya Mark

Re: my tiger 1 built

Post by MarkVerploeg »

well then
it should be time for an update, after a month or so
since my last update i only worked on the tools and the turret but i had to order some parts since my scratch building efforts didn't had the right results
most things that i missing i ordered in along with some tow shackels and cables and all hatches
these parts do need some attention but not that much

but i started out with the turret periscopes because they are not included in the kit
Image
it is a bit blurry but i made 8 of these half periscopes for the cupola and the loaders side of the turret

Image
this is the cover for the loaders periscope
this had 2 inner walls but i removed the foward one to make everything fit

then i tried to fit my replacement loader hatch
this means i had to remove the entire kit hatch that was molded on the turret
after that was done i made the holes for the hinges of the hatch

Image
this is it before final sanding

after i made the hole i made the rim that is inside the turret and the support for the hinge
and the support bracket that stops the hatch from falling on the crew
Image

also i did place the close quarters defence weapon on the back of the turret
and i placed all the parts on the cupola

Image
and that is all i have so far
i still need to make some rivets for the stowage bin (real boring work)
and then the entire turret should be complete and ready for paint

and then it will be time for the hull and all its parts but that comes with the next update
so until next time and happy modelling
Mark

thanks
and the metal parts look great except for some pinmarks
and metal ones sure don't sand down that easy compared to styrene
but they are for an RC tank actually but it fits and looks good so i'm happy

Re: my tiger 1 built

hi there
so i think it could be time for a update on this build
it has been about 6 or 7 weeks since i last touched it and then i had the bug
so i just had to do some work on this massive beast
i had several parts for this tank pre build stuff like the fenders and some other parts i showed in earlyer updates
and this is the result on the tank
Image
as you can see i placed the front fenders
also i replaced the driver and radioman's hatches these are working hatches
they just slammed shut when i tried to take the picture
this is because i made a ledge on the hull as there is on the Original to keep out the rain that is on the hull
i made this with lead foil but i left in a part that is now blocking the hatch swingarms

Image
here we have the side view with the pe fenders these are bend and dented with a pair of pliers

Image
the lower front with the blocks that connect to the drive sprocket
these needed some filling and now i just have to sand down the excess putty
there are 2 big sinkholes just above the parts aswell and these need some sanding

Image
the drivers side
i just added the small cable and the fenders

Image
and the tigers bumm
here it is clear to see where i used putty this is because the zimmerit pack i used it for a early style tiger so there where all kinds of holes in the rear plate for the use of feifel air filters wich where no longer used on mid and late production models

Image
and here i have the crew figures
these are verlinden figures all of them but the crew comes as a set and if you compare it to the other set they have wich has the half figures but not the standing commander you pay 2 euro's less
so i went with the full set
the other figures are the panzerschreck figure wich is missing parts of the weapon like sights and the ring that sits on the back of the tube
and the last one is the ss sniper but on this one i'm not sure iff i will use it in this diorama
because i don't know iff it will look good and if not i have seen a dio with this guy sitting in a half blown up tower so i can use it with such a setting if i want
and that is pretty much all i have done so far
i'm trying to get it ready for paint but there are some small things that need to be done first
but i will keep you updated on that when i get to it
cheers Mark

Re: my tiger 1 built

Post by MarkVerploeg »

hi guys and girls
i have a new update on my big tiger
last time i had all the big components sorted out and i needed to make the smaller things like the photo etch clamps and that sort of things
i reworked the towcable hlders using the kit part
i cut off the cables and cleaning rods ,then i drilled out the blocks to make room for my scratch build cleaning rods
the cables themselces will be replaced by 2 aftermarket copper cables that i will have running down the sides of the vehicle

Image
here you can see the reworked holders with my home made cleaning rods
i did make them the same lenght as the kitparts but i tought they where to thin so i used 2mm styrene rods instead of the 1mm thick kit part
also the frontbrackets for the heads of the cables are visible here , these are drilled out kit parts aswell
all these parts where sanded down a bit on the topside and i used leadfoil to make new covers for them

Image
here are all the tools in place with the pe clamps on them
the aber set i have for this offers 2 sorts of clamps but there is a difference between them , 1 is for square tools and the other for round tools
these are not that hard to make even for me with my very limited pe experiance
the big square in the middle is a scratch build holder for the wooden block wich i will keep seperate untill i have the painting done
this part is made out of lead foil

Image
here i have the reardeck with some more brackets for the cables and with the pe grills in place
the covers on the exhausts are the kit parts in this photo but i made new ones to replace them
but this part of the tank is kind of boring in my opinion and for that i have a bucket and the ammo set by aber to dress up this part of the tank

Image
and before i forget about it
this is my new wooden block
the wood is made with balsa wood the straps on the outsides are lead foil and i glued some left over rivets on the that i had left from the turret bin
the middle strap is made from 2 parts one is a straight and simple piece with a hole drilled in it
the other has a small buckle made from brass wire and the edge of the lead is folded over one side to secure it
the small pin was glued in last

Image
and these are the replacement exhaust covers
to make them i folded a piece of lead foil around the kit parts and worked them into shape
then i cut off the excess lead with siccors and a hobby knife

and that is all for now
the building of this tank is complete and now it is time for paint
i have picked a scheme that i want to use for it wich is a pretty bold one i think but it does look cool in my opinion
the only problem is i ran out of primer and airbrush cleaner so that will have to wait a few days
as i will go to the hobby shop in a couple of days
so thank you for watching and untill next time
cheers Mark

Re: my tiger 1 built

hi guys
so i think it is time for a little update as it has been over a month since the last one
the last time i had all the parts ready for priminig and paint
so now the big block of plastic is painted
but enough talk here it is

Image
i just added the first layer of camo to the base
it is a mix of buff and red brown from tamiya
and i seem to have lost the pics of the priming and base but all you would see is a grey and yellow tank

Image
and here it is all painted up
the red brown is repainted as i found the first mix to pale
all the small metal bits are painted with Vallejo gunmetal grey
the tracks are srayed with thinned gunmetal from tamiya (had this laying around and found it after moving some stuff : )

Image
Image
Image
Image

and that is the tank for now
i think that a build of this size has some good things about it like the detail you can add or that is already there
but the size itself is a drawback aswell ,just getting this thing on the bench means moving some stuff to make free space for this one but i think she will be put a side for a short while as this giant is starting to get on my nerves after a month of having it on and off the bench
and some time on other builds is a healthy change i think
i did make a small dio setup to test if it will fit on the shelf i want to put it once done

Image
Image
but as you can see there is still a lot to do before this is done
so i hope you guys like it and untill the next update
thanks for watching
cheers Mark

thanks Devon
i did do my favorite camoscheme on this one
looks much darker then.most
but the size makes it harder to work on
and it takes a lot of paint there are about 2 bottles of thinned tamiya paint on it
while a normal build takes about 25% of a bottle
but i'm glad you like it

Hey Mark... I have no idea why I missed this... SHame on me.
I didn't know that there was any work done on anyone's builds.
:bash:
She looks amazing buddy... absolutely amazing. Certainly inspiring, I was planning on getting back to work on mine sometime over the summer, but now I was to get back into her last week haha
Look at that paint work... beautiful!!
I have a big build that starts tomorrow so I won't have anytime for awhile but I plan on working on my tiger over the summer.
I'm way behind now haha.

Wow that's a gorgeous beast!!!

Thanks Coen
There is still a lot to do on it though
It still is likr in the pics and i haven't touched it since
I had a problem with 1 figure that won't go in his hatch so there is some resin cutting to do
Maybe i should start weathering it sometime so it is finished
Lucky for.me i have no real big stuff coming soon
That starts whem the shelf of doom gb begins as u want to repaint my leopold gun and make a diorama with it
So this should be done by then i hope
But first i will finish some current builds

not really an update on the tiger
but i have painted the last figures for this build , there is still some detailling to do but they are about 80 % complete
Image
and here is one of the reasons why all my work slowed down
there is a lot of time used for these big dudes
i hope to repaint parts of the tiger soon as i have messed up part of the chipping :wall:
but nothing that can't be fixed
after that i will weather both the tiger an the figures so i can make the diorama
thanks for watching

Those look awesome Mark!
I'm not completely sure, but I think that they're the same fellas that I'm using for mine, minus the grenadier.
I'll be painting them in a much earlier style though.

And no DOTS EVERYWHERE ahhh my eyes my eyes
Could i did see you figure in one of your videos
The 3 half figures are sold as a set but the set with the standing commander was on sale for almost the same price so i picked that one
The grenadier is verlindens panzerschreck kit
It looks pretty good but the fit of the left arm is terrible
I still need to paint the panzerschreck though but that comes with the update

My commander and the three half fellas all came in the same set. I think that I got it from scalehobbyist in the USA years ago thinking that it was a 1/35 set. Oops.
They looked awesome so I kept them.
That grenadier looks excellent even with the fit issues. He'll really help to dress up the dio that's for sure.

They looked awesome so I kept them.
That grenadier looks excellent even with the fit issues. He'll really help to dress up the dio that's for sure.
Was a big suprise then such a big box for 1:35 figures
But they are good
I just don't plan on using all the pe for the medals
One or two guys need the arm patch of the eagle but that is all
And some wires for the headphones
I didn't use the troatmics either as i couldn't get them to fit
And the grenadier has a ammo box with 2 rockets aswell so those will find their place in the dio

hi guys
so here we are , about 20 months after i started this build and have put it to the side many times i have finished it
i am sorry that i don't have a lot of progres pictures but i have lst some of them and today i forgot to make any at all but i do have some and a reveal of sorts

so here we go

Image
as the Tiger was painted a while back i could start with a gloss coat and applying the decals
it was then glossed again and a dark wash was applied
i do a lot of streaking effects these days and i do it on almost all my builds but this time i didn't because the ridges of the zimmerit are pretty big and there would be large build ups of the streaking wash in between them
besides that these effects look better on a flat surface instead of these ridges

Image
i then started to build a base for the diorama
the base is made up from a MDF shelf but any kind of wood will do just make sure it is thick enough
then i glued balsa wood sheets to the sides ,they are 5mm thick and i use these for bases and scratch building because it is easy to work with and if you need a certain size you can just cut it from the sheet
this box was then filled with a large block of modur foam wich is a light weight foam that is often used by rail road modellers

Image
Image
testing the layout
i do this with almost every diorama i make as plans often chance during a build
unless i am very certain about the way i want everything to look

Image
then a big jump in the build
the modur foam was cut into shape to resemble a gentle slope
this is covered with a mixture of sand , plaster (speeds up the drying) , white glue (PVA) and water
the plants and branches are pieces of roots and moss that we had growing around our fish pond
when that was filled i gathered these things to dry and use later
the little fence in the back is made up from the same balsa wood as the outside of the base
i just cut the pieces to size and glued them together
it was then painted with a wash to make it look old and weathered

Image
from a different angle

Image
test fit with all the figures to see where everything will go
when i remove the figures i put a piece of metal wire in the hole in the base
this is the same size as the one in the figures foot and it keeps that hole open and makes it easier to find later on

Image
and once i was happy with everything i finished it
the tracks where given some mud to blend them in with the base
i also applied some pigments to the soil to make it look like it has a finer texture and not too corse
then as a final step the outside was painted and i was done with this build

here are some "reveal" pictures

and that is all i have for this one
i hope you like it
happy modelling
cheers , Mark

Thanks guys
I am glad you like it but for now i will stick to 35th scale kits for a while
I think those are a bit easier to build and paint
Although the huge pe parts where a nice change
