Tamiya 1/32 F4U-1 “Birdcage” Corsair

Post by jkelleycrna »

I started this project in August 2013. I finished it up in February 2014 - My last model completed.

There’s really nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said…it’s the best kit I’ve ever built. It’s built out of the box, with the exceptions of Barracudacals cockpit placards & stencils, and Eduard seat harness, and the coiled solder used as an antennae tensioner.
ID light lenses were created using white glue.

Tamiya acrylics were used exclusively, mixed according to the kit’s suggestions.
Weathering was done with airbrushing and artists’ oils.
I hope that you enjoy the photos...

You should. It's a bit pricey, but worth every penny. The hours of enjoyment you'll get out of it will make it a very reasonable investment. :)

The eduard seatbelts are those made like tissue ? They have some PE named FABRIC or something ...they look really great !

No, these are the regular, printed metal Eduard harnesses. In fact, they're from a set for the 1/32 P-61 Black Widow, lol! The ones in the kit are very thick and hard to work with, even after heat-annealing. I saw these at a show and grabbed them. I think I have two more sets in the package.

The "FABRIC" ones they have now are some kind of micro-fiber belts. I have some made by HGW, from the Czech Republic. They're pretty cool.

Very impressive. I'd love to build this kit but it's way too expensive for me!
The general finish is excellent

OK, Lego, here we go....
These are Tamiya acrylics callouts from the instruction booklet:

Upper surfaces: XF-18:3 + XF-2:1
Lower surfaces: XF-19:2 + XF-2:1
Interior: XF-5:2 + XF-8:1

I hope this helps you. :)

Sorry I should have posted I bought the kit last weekend. Your posts and Paul's build pushed me over the edge.

Thank you for posting the mix though.

Going to look for after market decals I don't like the look of the Tamiya ones in the kit.

Excellent, I've been working on the corsair getting it ready for the next video, should have it up by mid week. :cheers2:

As for the colours i would do a little research as depending on which scheme you do the tamiya callouts are a little off ;) Akan do a nice paint set i bought for mine, closest colour matches i could find (the only ones in fact)

Linden hill mob or something you said in your video as the supplier for Akan. The ant hill mob are the little guys from the Penelope Pitstop cartoon.

Hmmm.....I've never heard of AKAN. Do you use the acrylics or enamels?
How do the acrylics compare to Gunze Mr. Hobby Color aqueous?
They seem to have a nice selection, perhaps I'll see if I can get them to ship me some to the States.

I love your Corsair as well. Your decals turned out better than mine. I had a lot of trouble with the insignias in this kit for some reason. Tamiya's decals seem to be hit and miss and are so thick. They wouldn't melt evenly. If I did this again, I would go with after market decals because these were so aggravating.

Your weathering skill in this build is superb. I should have done more washes and such. But it's easy to take it too far. Yours is just subtle enough. Can't say enough. I might build it again someday. I hope Tamiya will release the F4U-1D with the bubble canopy along with Pappy Boyington's markings.
