Hello!

Post by LeoDahlin »

Hi! I have heard about this site and decided to make an account!

I'm a 14 year old beginner modeller. (I used to build model kits a few years ago but stopped.)
I don't know much about this site, but I hope it will help me improve my models and take part in Group builds.

There is a question I would like to have an answer to now.
Since I'm only 14, I don't have a job so I don't have much money.
What companies make cheap kits?
If I have to pay 60£ for every kit, I'll only be able to make a couple models every year!

Leo

(Sorry about my bad english, I'm from Sweden.)

Hi Leo, I think you have come to the right place - welome to the forum - it's certainly improved my model making. Taking part in the group builds is a fantastic way to get more out of the hobby. As for kits, what sort of models do you like making - is it aircraft, armour, cars, ships etc, and what scales do you prefer (1/72, 1/48, etc)? I am sure your fellow forum members will have plenty of suggestions for good value kits :th:

:welcome: aboard Leo! I'm from the UK, but live in the USA now and if a Airfix kit costs 18.00 pounds in England, it costs $18.00 in the USA...which means they are a lot cheaper here than the UK based on the 1.66 conversion rate.

I don't know what the shipping rates are to Sweden, but check out if you save any money by ordering from a USA sight...here's a couple of links for you to look at for USA suppliers of kits and ancillaries that I use. The first supplier is actually in my neighborhood, so when I place and order with them, I collect the items I have ordered and save shipping costs.

I haven't checked the shipping costs to Sweden, but if you place a order for a few items, the additional one shipping cost might still work out slightly less?

I look forward to seeing your models!

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Leo, :welcome: to ISM. Firstly, don't apologise for your English, it is just fine (and I'm sure that a lot of the guys here can't speak a word of Swedish - I now I can't)

With regard to cheaper kits, you should look for Airfix or Revell. The new mouldings are pretty good, but their older kits can be more trouble than they are worth (the old kits can have lots of problems with fitting, flash, raised panel lines, and generally poor quality).

If you are looking for armour, the older Tamiya kits are usually very good and are not too expensive.
Look out for deals on Academy and Hasegawa, I've had a few of them and found that they are usually very nice to make up and I've usually paid less than £10 for them.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I'm sure that either Schoof or HamilkarBarkas would be able to give you some info as to the cost of European costs.

Welcome to the forum Leo , I think Airfix or Revell are the most afordable, try the new mouldings as Daishi12 mention above , also I saw some HobbyBoss 'Easy assembly kits' that don't cost too much ( well ,at least here in Portugal ) and they are great to start from , ok they are easy build kits as the name mention , but for a start and to get used with materials in my opinion they are ok , but you can make something like this 109 (not the perfect build , far from that :-)) , it was my first build since my return to the Hobby :

It is a 1/72 scale from HobbyModels it cost me around 6/7 £

Looking forward to see your first build here in the forum , try and experiment and always have fun !
