I just noticed Academy released a new asymmetrical turret version of their Tiger I Mid exterior only model as a 70th anniversary for D-Day. Figured this was as good of a place as any to mention it in case other people hadn't seen it.

I'll be participating in this build as well. Just need to find a kit to build. Id love to find a Dragon 6253 but Im thinking a standard Dragon kit plus a full AM PE set will be much cheaper lol...

I've been looking for that kit as well and it usually goes just beyond my price range on ebay. So I bought 6406 And plan to either just use the styrene parts or get an etch upgrade, although that puts you near the price 6253 goes for. Also consider adding an etch upgrade to 6383 as then you wouldn't need to go after market for Zim and it goes for almost $10 less, but the etch sets for 6253 might not fit well without major alterations. Those are really your only two affordable options for Dragon Late Tigers.

Coen, as far as I can tell it's the same kit with the new box art, possibly different PE grills and these two new sprues. That gun looks an awful lot like the Dragon gun style.

It does a bit.
Where did you get that Sprue shot?
I just got my hands on a 6253 for $60 off ebay. Paul found it for me. I'm a really happy dude. Been hunting for that kit for years.
I got the Atak zim set and the masterbox resin tracks for it too (the tracks in 6253 are the wrong ones).

I missed my shot at getting 6253 for cheap. seen it go for $55-$60 a few times and not pulled the trigger. So I just bought 6406. For the level I'm at it's fine to not have the goodies.

I've used 6406 myself, good kit.
It looks like everything that's light grey is new tooled in that academy kit and all the dark grey is original. Not much left of the old one by the look of it. That's promising.
It's too bad that they didn't improve those rubber band tracks though.

I'm finding it hard not to snap one up. I only found it because I do a daily search on ebay for Tiger kits and it just popped up today. Hard to know if it's worth what they're asking for it though as it's almost as much as some of the Dragon kits go for on ebay ($40-$50). Still always excited to hear about a new Tiger I kit.
Besides, I think this is enough Tiger kits for a while, although the Academy early with interior is still on the slow boat from Korea.

Also consider Tamiya. The kits have nearly the exact same molds as Academy in some cases. Just make sure it's something after the new tooling in 1989. So the late version 35146, The mid 35194, the early 35216, and the initial (Afrika) 35227 are all fine kits. Simple, go together easy and look pretty good. And you can find all of these for somewhere around $30-$35 online if you look.

If you don't like the idea of rubber band tracks you can try some after market, but if you're going for an easy build rubber band is the least work. I could recommend after market stuff as I'm sure Coen, Seb or any number of us could. Some styrene, some white metal. But again if this is your first armor build then maybe keep it simple?

I've actually got a couple of tanks in my little stash, Miniart Valentine and Trumpy T-90 both have styrene tracks but you may be right Manloon keep it simple for my first, we'll see...

I am a fan of the AFV Club workable tracks which are styrene and not on sprues. and are pretty simple to build. I use those which run about $18 on most of my Tigers. If you want to try after market it's a good way to ease in.

I'm in mate! Even though I've only built a tiny little 1/72 Airfix Stug 3 from the 70's I had a blast and I've got my eye on the Tamiya 1/35th Tiger I (Early and Mid production) at my model store, just depends on which one is in stock

. Looks to be a pretty decent price too, $41.99 AU for each, if I can find some AM for it I might just have to give it a go.

I have a question for this build
i have the very nice looking Otto Carius mid production Tiger
But i got it second hand and the former owner has removed all the bags from the sprues
Everything is still on the sprues though with the exception of 1 part that snapped off (think during transport)
Would it be a problem to build this or would you prefer i start a completely new kit with the bags still unopened
It won't be a problem as i have early and late prod. in the kit aswell but i was planning to build this kit
Cheers Mark

Go ahead and build the Otto Carius one if thats what you would like to build. One piece being off the sprew isnt going to matter. Thanks for asking though.
