Started the weathering on the KT

My weathering stages using acrylic paints and washes with enamel based filters so they don't react with each other.

Paint (acrylic)
Chipping (acrylic)
Filters (enamel)
Pin wash (acrylic)
Oil rendering (mineral spirit)
Pigments dust effects
Airbrush dust effect
Pigment mud
Stains and streaking

I started using Vallejo model colour German cam black brown as my chipping colour, giving that natural weathered bare metal look. Using a 000 brush applying random shapes a d small pieces of sponge, more so in high wear areas and damaged parts. Once weathered it'll tone it down.





With the chipping done I then applied a couple of coats of sin industries tritone filter.



With the filter wet



And dried giving that faded look, really makes the Camo blend perfectly.

Is your chipping done with a sponge ? Or mini brush

I use both methods, it's looks a little ott but it all fade into each other as soon as the pigments go one.

Ok so a bit of oil fading to add to the filter effect.

Using various mig oil paints, dabbed on to the body work, avoiding the zimmerit. This is then stumped back with mineral spirit, leaving a nice faded effect behind. Ive got a few dvds that show this done, i tend to do it a bit heavier as i like really faded armor.



At this point i normally think "what the hell have i done" but patience and more mineral spirit takes it back slowly.

And done, the camera doesnt pick the effect up too well, but it has a hazy look to it


Gotta let this dry then ill add some wash to the zimeritt to give it some depth

This is spectacular Paul. That filter really blows it away.
I may have to give them a try sooner rather than later. That faded glaze is really the business.
It's like an oil filter... with magic in it.

Great job on the chipping too Dude. I do it the same way. Old fashioned.

You gotta try the filters they are awesome, I know people say oil filters work the same, but they don't, they give a different hazy effect, hence why I use both.

Funnily enough me and lee were talking about chipping on the phone today, I much prefer doing it by hand, takes a lot longer but I think it gives a better effect.

I agree completely. I'll use a sponge for some things to add variety, but nothing beats the hairy stick I think.
You're dead on about the different haze. I can see it in your pictures. That is totally different than what I can get from my oils.
It's much better in many ways.

Right so, i added a dark dirt wash to the zimmeritt, which once dry gave the effect i was looking for, i think the theme im going for is FILTHY lol. The verlinden zim is alot better than the eduard, holds alot more detail to my eyes, but hey ho it is what it is



Ive then given it another pin wash with tamiya xf1 enamel thinned with mineral spirit. This brought out more of the detail lost n the oil fading. I also added chipping to the barrel using the same method as on the hull and turret.



I then used tamiya xf57 to start the dust effects, i airbrushed a light coat around the bottom of the hull and around the turret base, i went a little heavy around the turret but i can blend it in with the pigments.




Need to tidy up a bit then later im gonna start applying the dust pigments

Looking at those pics the dust effect looks really white, in real life its alot more transparent, i was worried for a minute and had to back and look at it again to make sure i hadnt overdone it

You're right about the Verlinden Zim. That's beautiful stuff. That micro damage really sets it off Paul.
Gorgeous. This is a stunning piece.
I think that the "over done" that you're thinking of is the heavy lighting at your bench. That last shot looks much more natural.
Pigments and the running gear will fix up anything that you might think is too opaque or bright.

Thought I would get some pics that show the airbrushed dust effect properly as my dslr seems to exaggerate them a lot.

So took a couple with my phone, this is how it looks to the eye, much more subtle.





Btw if anyone has any comments suggestions or criticisms I'm open to hear them, you won't offend me at all

I josh, looks awesome. The subtle dust effects on the fenders are great, and the zimmerit really pops with that wash on it.

How are you gonna handle the decals?

The only thing I would add is wheels and tracks I tend to find mine look better with them

Decals ? we dont need no stinking decals.

No there wont be any, late war tigers didnt have any tactical markings and some didnt even have unit markings, and i like that look so it will be bare of all markings bar one identification flag

Im a bit rubbish at unit markings etc, so im guessing which flag to use, would love to use the SS one but i think the swastika will look better contrasted against the battered KT

Love the build as always Paul and I've only got one criticism - it's tooooooo darn good!!

You're pretty much bang on with your flag choice Paul.
That one was used as well as a slightly more simplified one.
They weren't used often however, as at the time the late KTs were in use the Luftwaffe was pretty much toast and sticking a sign on your tank saying you were a bad guy for all the RAF and USAF to see from the air... not so good.
That doesn't mean they didn't do it though.
As for markings... you're right about that too... some of them didn't even have paint... they just rolled out with the primer and they camoed it up as best that they could in the field.

I've never seen cotton flags used before.
Alex of Alex Modelling has some I think but I've never seen them used.
I would love to see a vid on them if you have some time Dude.
If not tonnes of pics.

I'm excited about those flags Dude... can you tell.

Anyway this is the last pic of the tank itself you will see until the reveal, ive been applying various pigments last night and this morning, these are currently drying awaiting blending, so they may look a bit harsh.



After a few hours drying, once fully dry i can blend them more


So now ill start with the tracks and then on to the tools, figures etc.

Im hoping to get this done with the dio and the kubelwagen, but with just three weeks left, im gonna concentrate on the tiger done for now, as i dont want to rush it.

This is going to look spectacular Paul.
That weathering job is going to be perfect, I can already see where it's going.
I can't wait till the reveal Dude!

how did you manage to fix the zim on this tank ???? or is it another tank the ZIM is screwed up ?

I say the tiger weighs almost as heavy as the real thing with amount of metal parts in it, just wow smashing work, looks great
