I would compliment you on the awesome skills on show in the captain's cabin but I know you like to stay humble.
But it does look great mate. Well done.

In a bit of a fit of OCD, I reprinted the gold statues outside the doors so I could make them more three dimensional…
as I know how to now and I needed two more inside the quarters.
Tried an oval table like Barbossa and miss Swan were sitting at. Meh not so hot
WIP but I am up at the Ski Place again for Remembrance day w/e

You're the George Lucas of the forum. As the technology becomes available you go back and create special editions of the original releases. Just don't go selling your soul to Disney!Twokidsnosleep wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2023 3:53 am

Re: The Black Pearl... a slow build log
Catch up my photos to the work over the last week
The cabin is complete and Barbossa and Miss Swan figures are in there and the Greek statue girls too.
I had fun with the 3D printing of the bottles and skulls and such

Now the bridge deck is glued in and I am sealing any openings with styrene decking that will be painted to match up

All the cannons are secured in and the newly printed female statues added

Re: The Black Pearl... a slow build log
Thank you everyone for commenting
This is a real long slog of a build both for you to watch and for me to grind through
I appreciate your motivations
Getting the gun bay doors on the cannons. Some doors are open and some are closed.
They need a rope to pull the door up so I used a square shaped brass tube as the support for the rope to go through; you would pull the inside ship rope end and the door would flop open.
The kit just had a round styrene plug with the rope end tied to it on the outside of the ship....the physics make no sense as it would not pull the door open that way

I cut twenty two of those square brass doodads and have them all pinned, put in place and now primed tan
Next is rope and tie tiny knots for the doors

Stern of the ship has some lovely mouldings.
I also cemented in the three lamps and did an electrical test on them

Some silly details added to hide the wiring

Filling in open spots on her bum
Adding some styrene planks to gap areas. I think the lack of fitment were my issue with not gluing the hull and parts all at once
I have been more careful now to test fit everything at once while gluing

Once shaped, textured and painted up it will all blend in

There's always a hiccup at some point, but it's slowly coming together. You did a great job of populating the interior.
Those ejector pin marks are bit of a bugger to clean up afterwards or is there something else to glue in there to cover them ?

Re: The Black Pearl... a slow build log
Thank you gentlemen, one and all
Yes some kit failings but honestly everything fits pretty well...surprisingly well in fact. The issues were with me and the order I glued things up
The moulding is really well done; the complicated fancy detail on the stern is lovely and it fit in absolutely perfect.
Deciding if I have all the cannon doors open or all closed or a haphazard mixture....ya likely the latter
I am slowly messing with the external hull colour and weathering. I am doing it like the decking but much darker and more black acents
Then a cement wash that leaves a bit of a sea spray effect.
Should be good. Just stealing little bits of time after work or supper to work on her

Moving on…
Got the cannon doors on and their lifting ropes all attatched too.
Now random priming the side of the hull for a black oil layer and then some brown highlights overtop before weathering

Got a new drink these days: whisky sours, sans the egg white top.

Re: The Black Pearl... a slow build log
Looks very good. Going to be awesome when all the masts are in place and the rigging is up.
Coming back to a comment you made about the gun ports. If your going to have the guns run out as in the top deck then would it be usual to have all the ports open and at least in the action of opening ports and moving the guns out to firing positions. I don't know it's just what crossed my mind. What do you think or what other scenario do you envisage ?

I pushed the lower deck guns inboard when I cemented them.
In most of the movie photos I have, the lower doors are closed or floppily closed.
If I do a water scene the doors would be closed so as to minimize water ingress.
The upper deck cannons had to be extended out to make some blinking deck space!

Good call on the lower gun doors. Dont want her doing a Mary Rose on us!
This thing is going to be massive once you start on the sails and rigging. Difficult to comprehend

They do call them "Tall Ships" nowadays. Have you decided on what you're going to use for rigging? String, EZ Line, etc.?Twokidsnosleep wrote: ↑Tue Nov 28, 2023 4:14 pmYes that was the ship that swamped herself...I think you got me on that rabbit hole a few pages back and the lesson stuck!

I hadn't realised they'd not bothered with the top section & a half of each mast for the movies, I guess it's a lot of extra building & rigging to avoid if you can get away without itTwokidsnosleep wrote: ↑Tue Nov 28, 2023 4:14 pm The masts were so tall they only did a portion of the masts for the working prop

Ok that was a good fast response
I have blackened both sides for weathering and am thinking a black tarp over part of the boat
There are some oars and stuff to add in as well
My computers are not talking to each other at the moment and this one won't let me access Flickr...so no pics yet

Re: The Black Pearl... a slow build log
On my recent trip to Cutty Sark I saw that they had them stowed both ways up so both are equally correct

So my vote is the same as the other lads - it'd be a real shame to hide all that internal work so keel down/thwarts up please
