Trying to make some smaller wood blocks…there is a limit to what one’s fingers can hold safely…two thumb jabs later

These are on the foremast , front of the ship so very visible

The rigging is looking amazing! Is there a point where you need thinner metal pieces for the scale?

Hats off on learning all of the rigging and sails names. There seem to be hundreds of them.

More microscopic awesomeness - that rigging is going to look spectacular when it's all fitted out.

A few steps forward and then another if one back

Detailed the little deck boat with the oars, mast and sail


Added a cannon ball rail along both sides of the visible cannons
Did a coiled rope for the canon’s tackle lines



Small internal details to do before the ropes come in…yes I am dragging it out in avoidance
The step back was I busted off one of the rear lamps. Than means I tore off the support AND the wiring to the light
I will rewire it all up and get them all working again
Not putting them in until the rigging is done though as keep bumping them loose

Feck!!!



I keep bumping them and it is just a matter of time until all the wiring breaks
Going to take the lamps off and redo the wires, leave until the end

Back to the niddly bits for the deck roping in the cannons.
Finished one side of the deck.



The brown ropes are the tackle ropes




I have to get some clean up and flat coat any shiny spots from the CA glue. Then the other side.

I am trying a stained canvas sail to be tied down over the boat

The painting of the Sistine Chapple comes to mind when reading this WiP. Epic and unending.

I have some attachment points for the rigging to re-make into brass and sturdier structure
These have the belaying pins to make into brass, this time with a soldered round top
Like I did with these ones except there are two with eleven sticks each!

My chin is aching from where it keeps hitting the floor. Those cannon look superb all roped up like that, stunning stuff.

It is super small especially when making little wood beans like those
I see all the defects and shiny ca spots in the photos I have to go fix

Super work roping up all those canons mate - great attention to detail.

Shame about knocking that lantern off but I'm sure you'll figure out how to put it right again & probably with additional embelishments

The quick cabin tour is a really nice touch too

Yes the scale gets small for these blocks and both the wood and the brass have a hard time coping with the forces and my honking fat fingers. When you go smaller that means thinner and weaker and certainly harder to see and hold.
I heated those wire loops on the blocks and added soldered to them with an extra solder blob even to make them stiffer, which it did

I did the canon blocks with just small wood ‘coffee bean’ shaped hard wood (alder) with a groove down the middle. Hardly a double pill block and tackle like is really used, but the scale is too small for that anyways…at least for my capacity and the diameter of rope I am using; so it gives the gist of the reality.

These are the wood bonkers that hold down the ropes for the sails







I have all the racks re-made, the holes drilled and now am soldering the round tips on the 48 brass belaying pins

Had to do some work on the Pearl’s temporary berth as the grey foam on the front was flopping and allowing the ship to fall

Wood reinforced the foam and added some scrap leather for the hull to sit on nicely.







Now she sits firmly with a bit of luxury

Belaying pin fabrication a few different styles


Got all my supplies organized, made few prototypes and then into a rhythm and cranked out 50 pins

Some with solder tops , some resin and some dental acrylic + ca glue



A cut tube of brass telescopes into the pin to give it the collared neck look and a rest seat





This is how they sit in their holder. Still some final shaping to do with a file, but on right track

They were too small a scale to try in the mini lathe, and lathe is out in the garage, and it is a mess out there and god help you if you drop one finding it. So I just cobbled these together in the lab after work and chores.

Then brain went through various methods to make that ring seat

The pins...could you just put them in a mini drill and lay a fine file close to them. Might be enough to just round them off ?

Just need a fine enough collet to grab it….Been thinking of that issue

More super progress mate - those belaying pins are another great detail

Not a perfect spinning solution, but I made it work





Filed them all a bit more symmetrical. Not perfect, but the they are hand made so shouldn’t be

Sunday got the belaying pins primed tan and then oil painted burnt umber

I used the Abtelung Burnt umber this time vs the Windsor Newton just for a touch of contrast as the Ab is a bit lighter in colour
It is a lovely smooth paint to use and seems to dry quite quickly…I will accumulate some more


She sits awaiting someone to rope her lines or the cat to bump her off again

Excellent work. I may have to try those oils. Mine are very slow drying if applied with any depth.

I dispense oil paint on to a bit of cardboard as a palette so it sucks out any extra oil. That makes it dry faster

Ok well,diving into the deep end of ship rigging.
Of course the kit directions and the real ship have differences, so looking to do best I can and pick my battles.
The idea is to first do the fixed rigging that supports the masts. Those lines are all down the middle of the ship, leaving you room to do the other more lateral stuff second, so you stay out of your way.

Added the other blocks that come off the three masts and are used for the sails. Have to do these now as never get to them with all the other stuff that will get in the way.

Monday mornings just wouldn't be the same without more eye popping updates on this awesome build

I am leaving the rope ends long so I can final adjust tightness near the end as I expect some sagging as I mess around with the sails.
All three masts have to go on fairly soonish, so she suddenly becomes a really big beastie on the desk

Agreed! I just got to spend another week in the hospital. I haven't been able to do any scale modeling because my hands shake so badly . I have been able to design how I'm going to paint the bead lock rims on my 1:1 jeep and came up with a way to indicate where the valve stem is, mostly while half asleep. Maybe not a good thing but I'm liking the asymmetrical, individual paint scheme for each rim and then a painted flag on the spoke where the stem is.

Way off base for your build. It's looking great!
