Matchbox PK-116 Mk IX/NF30. The "Poor man's" Mosquito in 1/72

Post by wappynutter »

Okay, hopefully Nige will let me in with this old, not very accurate version of the De Havilland Mosquito. :

All you guys sporting their Tamiya's and larger Revell kits left me to dig through my small stash and find out a small scale "freebie" kit i received at the end of last year as part of a "Sorry i miss sold you a kit" handout..
I purposely put this in close reach just for this SiG..... Hope its a worthy entry?
Unfortunately, Matchbox messed up on the shape ( tail is wrong apparently, among other things ), and the cockpit detail is slim to say the least.
Panel lines are recessed as opposed to raised but are again, dogged with complaints that they are "too deep"...
Landing gear is wrong, tyres are wrong, Clear parts are thick and not very transparent....
Oh dear, this may well be a right pigs ear of a kit.... Some may yell... "Burn it now!"..

In its favour, it is built purposely for the younger audience to encourage modelling, moulded in tricolour plastic, the fit is reported to be nice.
Also, it isn't an "Airfix".... which for me is a welcome change.. Tho' maybe just "as bad" if not worse in its reputation. :eeek: :violin:
Built in 1976.... and tempting me to enter the other Long-term build on the forum, the kit looks to be in fair order, all but the decals, but they may be salvageable... :
Here you go with a quick peek in the box, be prepared to be amazed at all the glorious detail!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Instructions are pretty simple..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

These decals are real bad, but on a plus i did get the paper off the front without damaging them any.

Image

Sprues next.....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

....and thats where we are for now guys...
Planning on maybe giving it the old "Panzerman Bill" treatment with a little scratch building to add the detail, not much as the kit cannot support too much extra work, but some..
I promise, one day i will build a more "up to date" kit..... "Nostalgia" and "Childhood memories" should be my middle names. Some of these kits need sending back to the last Century i know...... but they all deserve the love, and to be built... even if it is nearly 40 years on from manufacture... lol.... :wall:
Till the next time, stay safe, keep well... Play nice with the plastic fella's... :thumb1:
:cheers2:

Yours included with that mighty fine scratch detailing going on there!..

So just a quick update on the Poor man's Mossie.... :eeek:
Seriously lacking in detail i think we gonna be building some "Extra's"...
...but just how much Extra do we go?:

I Choose the Bomber variant of 105 squadron out of RAF Marham in Norfolk of the Summer of "43"..
The other option is the Night fighter and i don't fancy the paint scheme as much.... easier.... but not as nice.
First thing i notice is NO bomb bay doors and NO bomber variant cockpit hatch.
So off i went on i-tunes and spent years old credit registered to the i-pod account i no longer use..

Purchasing a couple of e-pub versions of these books..
SAM Modellers Datafile 01 - de Havilland Mosquito

Image

...and this must have book...
Osprey 07..modelling the de havilland mosquito

Image

Some awesome info in both these publications and by using an online PDF conversion tool i can view them on my PC too...

Now neither are really geared up for the old Matchbox kit, in fact you Tamiya guys would be in your "Eye holes" with the Osprey offering...
My useage is to try and Doctor the cockpit and add detail to the landing gear and hatches.
I cannot change the overall shape of the Mossie to be "Rivet counter" accurate but i can detail up the old kit... Did i mention its a teeny 1/72 scale??
Out with the Plasticard and Opti visors then.....

Super kit detail!!...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Damn sweet eh?? Bet you 1/48 Tamiya guys are well jealous? lol..... :wall:
We'll just call it a blank canvas on which to add a little ( not much ).. detail..

Bomber variant nose attachment time.... Lets see if we left with an ugly seam line eh?

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Not as bad as i imagined......

Wing pieces are moulded in nice dark green?? Typical Matchbox, attract the younger modeller with bright colours and offer the choice of not needing to paint your bird...
According to the SAM guide the wings are needing a slight under-wing bulge but i am not gonna start messing with the structure..

Image

Image

Image

Image

So we are going to leave it there for now......
A cockpit is partly built but i will save that for next time as it needs some more detail.
Any information or assistence you "Mossie" pro's can offer with reference to the bomb bay doors and cockpit entrance hatch would be greatly appreciated. I am at a loss as to why Bay doors etc.. weren't etched into the mould. Apart from one hatch the skin is as smooth as ice. I know she was a wooden construction but hatches and doors would have been present surely?
Okay, enough waffle, thanks again guys for taking a look, would greatly appreciate all comments and advise.
Till next time, take care, stay safe and keep well guys..
Play nice with the styrene.. :thumb1:

Building all these fancy new kits must be like hitting the jackpot... haha...

I am sure you will work your magic on this little kit
That is the fun of 1/72' you can go crazy because no one can see anything
A nice little dio on a landing strip or better yet flying over a prison wall dropping bombs would be cool
Ya, something "simple" like that

Thanks for the vote of confidence Antonio, much appreciated.
I too built these gems as a small boy, they were cutting edge moulds back then....
Unfortunately for modelling, Star Wars happened in the Cinema and my life changed..
I guess I am gonna need to pull out all the strings to dress this build up to the other guys standards... Tamiya and Revell have produced excellent examples of the Mosquito for the modeller to work with.. :thumb1:
All the best my friend...

Nah.... Already working on cockpit and hatches etc.....
Not very good mind, but I am trying, honest!.... :wall:

Back with an update guys......
Like the Otana, i keep picking this up, fiddling with it a little then putting it down again..
I wanna "Go for it!" so bad... but other priorities and commitments steer me away from any real model time..
Like a couple of you guys, i am a "stay at home Dad" now as the wife can earn 3 times my wage, and for less hours and effort.
..and as Maternity leave is officially over ( Evie-mai is 10 months old today )..... the Wife is finding herself out more slowly easing back into her old job..
Meaning i have a very needy, time consuming, trying to walk, eating every little thing she finds, pooping, crying, moody little girl.. :violin: :wall:
She needs 110% of my concentration and attention, any plastic or small bits dropped are found and consumed before i get a chance to blink... she knows if i spot her i am after her to retrieve it out of the mouth... She's a Little Bugger.... My only "Me" time is after 8pm..... in the Kitchen on the worktop... poor lighting and surrounded by distraction etc...
Saying this.... i have done something... :th:
The Original cockpit with lone figure...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We will build a little more detail into a fresh cockpit i think.... nothing fancy..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Milliput pillows and cushions..

Image

Back Radio shelf..

Image

Making room for the Bomber variant cockpit hatch...:

Image

Armrests.... as per you "Tamiya Guys" cockpit detailing... :thumb1:

Image

Panel for the clocks and dials...

Image

Image

Image

Just testing for the bomber nose floor and entry tunnel from the outer cockpit door..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Next time i will be removing the outer hatch area, which is non existent on this Matchbox 1/72 scale kit so i will be making my own ...
I will try to create the radios as per you guys detailed cockpits again.... bear with me though, you lot have pre built or resin pieces to work with, mine will be chunks of styrene and Milliput...
Thanks as always for dropping by and taking a look.. Much appreciated fella's.. :thumb2:
Stay safe, keep well... till next time... Happy Modelling.. :thumb1:

Hey Bill, thanks brother..... You know me, like yourself, I too love a challenge with the older kits.... Add a small amount of styrene, a little Milliput, cross your fingers and hope to improve the old kit.... Unlike you, I am still a Padawan.... But I watch and learn... Hey Nige, thanks mate, much appreciated.....
She'll never look like all you other guys builds.... Tamiya gave you a fantastically detailed piece of styrene to work with..
..but I will try and entertain the viewers, improve a very simplistic, aging offering and hopefully finish with a Mosquito that actually still looks like a Mosquito when I've done... Lol..
Thanks again dude... All the best, stay safe and well.... :thumb1:

So.......This will be my second attempt at uploading an update as my try yesterday met with failure and disappointment.... :( :wall:
Internet dropped out and logged me out as i tried to upload.... a refresh took me to the log in screen so i mumbled some choice words and shut the Laptop down.....

............# Lots of pictures to follow #............
Been real busy picking and bitting and bobbing between parts.... I'll bring the thread bang up to date so its gonna be a long... dragged out posting... Sorry in advance.. :thumb1:

Where were we then?? I left off last time with rebuilding a cockpit...

Image

Then made up some floor supports before i install the bomber nose floor and hatch way..

Image

I managed to grab the odd 10 minutes here and there so started on the wheels and landing gear.
The landing gear is very basic and according to the internet the wheels are all wrong for this Mk..
I could buy resin replacements but this is just a "Fun" build..... No rivet counting here....

Image

Image

Image

Image

In between sorting the landing gear and wheels i cut out the hatch ...

Image

Image

Image

...and installed the front part of the bomber version floor...

Image

Also during last week, i managed to find an afternoon home alone so took to the tray on the lap in the front room watching "World at War" on the TV for inspiration..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

...continued to detail the cockpit a little, sorry for the blurry pictures...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Decided to flit between bits as i got the chance so primed the wheels and Landing gear, then took them outside for a coat of Auto "Steel wheel" paint..

Image

Image

... and just like rubegoldberg "Will", i too was being watched by an Arachnid.... :eeek:

Image

Image

The big baloon tyres got a coat of Mig's finest rubber paint....

Image

Image

Image

Image

While all this was drying and i was back on the kitchen side, i set about sorting the control stick. There are 2 types, i want the bomber version which i believe looks like this.....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Added some wire trunking...

Image

Started the props.....

Image

Image

Then began to build the hatch entrance..... See... Flitting from piece to piece....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

|Going to incorporate the pilot and add a different co-pilot walking to the access ladder or outside the plane...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Finally i am going to add detail to the cockpit walls and detail the bomber nose section...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

...And for now.... we are up to date with the build....
Hope you all stayed till the end, thanks if you did guys, much appreciated...
If you just skipped to the end, hope you noticed all the added details as you scrolled through... theres more to add yet, its just a shame you'll not see it when i close it up, well you might but it'll be all blurry through these supplied canopies... hahaha... :D :shifty:
As always, thanks for taking a look....
Stay safe, keep well... till next time... Play nice with the Styrene.. :thumb1:

Hey Nige, Sorry for the lateness of the reply, i only just spotted your post bud... You blink and threads have moved off the main page as the traffic on ISM now is crazy fast...... Thanks as always, Every time you boost my ego with the kind comments..
Cheers mate, your too kind...  :thumb1:

While i am here i will post a progress report to keep the thread alive...
I finished up last post with detailing the cockpit and the walls inside. A kneeling cushion was added in the bomber variant nose for the targeting crew member to be comfy while pin pointing targets..

Image

Now i will build a targeting contraption from bits and bobs...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Not accurate at this scale.... just something detailed to clutter up the space a little...

Image

I glue fit the side nose windows and fill with white tac to mask for spraying....

Image

Image

Image

...and mount all the extras for base coating....

Image

Image

Mig's AMMO primer followed by Humbrol 78 Matt. Loads of mixed feelings across the net about this brand and colour for British cockpits but i don't care... as mentioned before, this is for fun, rivet counting is not welcome here... lol...  :thumb1:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then the green as mentioned earlier......

Ha... Thanks António, my detailing is only possible by following you guys building the Tamiya kit.
I have taken parts of the superb detailing included in the fantastic kit offered by the manufacturer and scaled down and simplified
them to suit my needs. Not all detail is required or even gonna be seen i don't think..... but we'll know its in there... ;)
I did purchase the modelling the Mosquito book but to be fair a lot of my build inspiration has come from you guys here on the forum..
Making it all is the easy part.... painting it up and making it look the part, now thats gonna be the challenge..:
Thanks again António, you kind comments are much appreciated..
All the best my friend, take care... :thumb1:

Well its been a while but yes i am still picking away at this old kit.... :wall:
I recently posted some pictures on the Facebook page showing my near completed cockpit so i thought i had better flood the thread with some new images for all you guys following the Mossie bites SiG on the forum.. :th:

As i write this post i am busy watching TET dry on my wings where i have just attached the engines so yeah, things are still progressing.. lol..
Lets start with the old cockpit, old figure, a paint up and build....

# Image flood incoming!...#
So.... the supplied cockpit looks like this...

Image

Inner walls like this....

Image

I built this....

Image

Detailed these....

Image

Primed him...

Image

So lets paint up the pilot and cockpit...
I am going for as much of a similar finish to you Tamiya builders as i can by scratch building and painting..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Time to detail paint the side walls and fit the targeting bits and bobs in the nose...

Image

Image

Drybrushed..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Bluetac removed from the windows...

Image

Image

Seatbelts made from electrical tape thinly cut and painted in Buff colour...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Which do you prefer??

Image

Image

Image

While i sat feeling chuffed to bits with myself for scratch building the cockpit.... that is gonna be totally hidden or obscured through thick canopy plastic.. lol... :bash: :wall:
I made a start on other bits...

My variant has drop tanks not bombs on the wings..

Image

Image

Drilled out some detail holes on the guards for the landing gear..

Image

Image

Drilled out a little and attached the exhaust ducts, again my variant had these not pipes coming out the side of the engines..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Props are glued in place and Yes they still spin!.. lol...

Image

Image

Fit check...

Image

Slowly building the engines and Landing gear up...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Started to remake the entrance hatch for the pilots...

Image

Image

Its small...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Real small....

Image

Image

Lastly i cut, built up and Klear coated the canopy...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

...... and once more the thread is bang up to date, all but the drying engine/wing construction sat in front of me...: ;)

Thanks for sticking by till the end of this post... Those that know my threads know i have a habit of image flooding and sharing ridiculously long posts... always have, Sorry...
So, till next time, thanks again.... Take care, stay safe and well... Happy Modelling... and lets all send some modelling love to the "Master" Sheperd Paine.... Speedy recovery Sir... More soon guys.. :thumb1:

Thanks Alex... lol.... I don't know how i do it either.. Big sausage fingers and all...   :thumb2:
I think my next challenge is gonna be fixing the wings to the fuselage and trying to achieve a symmetrical finish while giving the required tilt that wings have.... You know... that whole angled to give lift thing... forgotten the word.... lol..:
Good luck with that Revell kit, the Big Ed set will add loads of detail.
Till next time.. Thanks for dropping by.. :thumb1:

Cheers Nige.... keep picking away at this little gem. Dunno how its gonna go from here... Wings are quite odd as they have NOTHING to attach to the Fuselage with.. Just glue and a small prayer i think.. hahaha..
We will keep going... still a couple of months left yet...
Thanks again for taking a look mate, means alot... Take care.. :thumb1:

:hi: Sorry Guys.... I'm back, got side tracked a little honing my build skills on a teeny 1/76 scale Airfix StuG III and figures on a dio base over on a GB on YouTube.... Neglected my ISM SiG and GB builds.....
I have still been doing bits on both this and the Star Wars build, just real slowly...
I will flood the thread with my usual collection of photos and ramblings...
We had to mask off the canopy after the Klear had dried so....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Upon fixing the canopy i noticed a good sized gap that had to be built up and filled with styrene and white glue..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Started to mask off the undercarriage ready for primer...

Image

Image

A little filler for now...

Image

THEN...... I had the daft idea to mask and scribe the bomb bay doors in.... :wall:

Image

Image

Hmmm.... Not quite as i expected... but i suppose it wont be seen under the Mossie on the ground..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

cut out the wing tips to put clear navigation lights in after painting. Am i right, Red to port, Green to Starboard??:

Image

Image

Image

First coat/pass of Ammo grey primer went on...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Some more filling and sanding and another coat required...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Second pass with the primer and still i can see loads of imperfections..... and missed filling.... :wall:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

So that is where i am at to date..
A little more filler and primer touch ups, then on with the top coats..
As always, thanks for taking a look guys, much appreciated.
Till next time, take care, stay safe and well, Happy Modelling.. :thumb1:

Thanks Nige, I'm still picking away at this old Matchbox offering. Even now, I'm sat thinking about what needs sorting before I can add another primer coat... Lol...
A little more filler, then if it still don't look right then, I'm just gonna get the next colour on and hope its not too noticeable..
Thanks again bud, all the best.. :thumb1:

Thanks Will, thought I was right with the colours. Not gonna be that noticeable at this scale but you never know..
That canopy was a little bit anal to be honest... Swear words and cursing a plenty... :bash: :wall:
Now it's the filling that's annoying me.... Damn seam lines and steps in plastic joins... Why couldn't a near 40 year old kit just fall together all nice eh?? Hahaha...
It'll be fine I'm sure.. Thanks again, all the best mate.. :thumb1:

Okay, so just a quick update......
One word..... FILLER..... :wall:
Had another go at all the bits i was getting annoyed with...
Fill.....Sand...Repeat...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Sanded and cleaned up...

Image

Image

Image

Coated up with a waft of primer...

Image

Image

Still needs more sanding so out with the knife and sanding sponges...

...and that looks better....

Image

Image

Image

Hopefully start and get some colour and camo on now....
Fingers crossed..
Till next time, Happy Modelling Guys.. :thumb1:

Very small update on the mossie guys as time is against me at the moment...
Trying to add some colour and the scheme is that of the 105 squadron flying out of Norfolk in 1943....

Image

So like the boxart...

Image

Paint callouts have the light sea grey, dark green and matt night black undercarriage...
Found a Tamiya colour crossmatch for the Humbrol grey..

Image

Looks light but we will give it a whirl...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Masking up for the green took place this afternoon....

Image

Image

White tac and various tapes...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Green up next... but that's another update.....
Told ya it was a quick one... :D  :thumb2:

Well i get 2-3 hours a week.... always a Friday around lunchtime to bring in my airbrush and set up in the kitchen to spray....
The kids and the wife are out from around 11 until 2. In that time i bring in, set up, spray, clean up and put away until the next Friday session....
This Friday just gone, i got some green camo colour on the top of the Mossie.
The underside and up the sides of the fuselage will be a Matt Black finish as per the instructions and box art.. That hopefully, will be this Fridays adventure. :

The green is on, I do have some clean up where the white tac and Tamiya tape were left on too long and have left residue marks but its my own fault, i masked up a good 5 days before i got the time slot to spray... :wall:

So this week i haven't masked up yet..... Patience and timing is the key.... So you guys, what is best to use to clean off the residue marks?? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

Until the next colour application... Happy Modelling guys...
Thanks in advance for any assistance.. :thumb1:
:cheers2:

Looking good Andy will dabbing white tack on the areas not shift the residue? If not you get some very fine grit sandpaper and just give it a rub other than that I can't think at the mo.
