Graham22 Revell F/A-18 Hornet

Post by graham22 »

thought I'd attack the 1/48 F18 from Revell
1st impression was oh dear, looks an old tool, lots of flash. Overall pretty poor
Image
Assembled the cockpit,
Has to remove a lot of the raised details so the decals would sit well

Restarted the F18, really don't like this kit although it's looking better now, not sure why I don't like it, just hasn't got a nice feel

I have a similar kit from Revell. Not as flashy as this, and nicely detailed. But I have lost some enthusiasm for it since I was trying to add in a resin cockpit. Once I get that installed then I might get some mojo back for mine.

I'm currently filling my Revell Super Hornet 1:48. After doing my 1:72 airfix kits this thing is a real step backwards in fit.

What are you using to fill? I've been using Mr Surfacer 500

How did you go painting the launcher rails underneath with them already attached? I thought you may have issues paiting behind the closest one to the main fuselage?

I'm deciding what to do with mine at the moment, paint them then put them on or do it as you have.

Got in quite easily with the airbrush, lots of room so no issues
Finally got around to doing some work on the bench
F18 just a coat of clear

Nice! We are at very similar stages now. What paint did you use? I use My Hobby acrylic and it sprayed like a dream!

My Super Hornet. I have only done the underside and elected to leave off some of the rails to assist in getting a good paint coverage. I painted them separately so they'll go on now.

Cheers :th:

looking great mate.

Guess what? I just sprayed the top of my Super Hornet.......and it's the same colour as the bottom! Grrr

I must have got paints mixed up as I've managed to paint the top colour on the bottom as well! I'm not sure if it's worth repainting as I'll lose my pre shading. Or do I simply pre shade AGAIN and re spray the correct colour on the bottom?

Thanks
Finished the decals tonight, just need to decide if I add any weapons and light weathering - then another one complete
Image
The upper colour looking at reference photos is very close to the lower shade, mines is a fraction dark I think but I think it looks ok
As for your dilemma, I don't pre-shade as I put too much paint on the model and it disappears so I favour post washes. But I'm sure which ever you decide it will turn out well

I have built this kit several times and to me it is not too bad of a kit. I know you have to rescribe panel lines. Please use clear red on the lights there. I wish all the best and have fun By the way the two vents on top of the fuselage need to be filled in. I use super glue and sand them smooth.
