Airfix 1/48 Mosquito PR. XVI

Post by Willem »

Hope I'm not too late to the party but once the modelling mojo returns.........

I've got a few Tamiya mosquitos in the stash and I was tempted but I bought this last year.......

Image

Airfix have recently changed their instructions to modern CAD style. Not in this kit.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

And that's it for the build sequence. Reassuringly nostalgic (a bit like KP cheese and onion crisps and wrestling on the telly on a Saturday morning).

Two nice schemes round these off.

Image

Image

A big old bag full of sprues. Cheers Airfix.

Image

Six grey plastic sprues.

Image

On closer inspection. Raised panel lines!

Image

Flash.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Nice one.

There is a new fuselage in here though.

Image

Image

Old wings.

Image

New wings.

Image

How cool?!

Two sets of transparencies.

New. I think.

Image

Image

Old. I hope.

Image

This could be an interesting build. I love Airfix. They were the company that introduced me to gluing stuff together as a seven year old. Why have they supplied almost two entire kits? (Saved on packaging though as it all comes in one bag).

Decals and a pilot making a bid for freedom.

Image

Reference material.

Image

This scheme looks cool.

Image

Maybe. undecided yet.

A source of inspiration and a very cool book.

Image

Will be making a start on this in the next few days. Should be fun.

:cheers2:

Cheers lads and thanks Nigel for hosting.

Some progress to report.

Cockpit went together pretty quickly and I got this done over an hour or so last night.

Image

Going to need a bit of putty on this build.

Image

Image

Image

Have decided to put the aftermarket away and do this OOB apart from some harnesses and a canopy mask (still need to check that out on the net).

Crew area primed up first thing this morning.

Image

See what I mean about filler?

Image

Image

Fuselage halves were soon primed after a bit of filling and sanding.

Image

Then given some lightened cockpit green.

Image

Detail painting under way. I wish my new camera wasn't quite so good at up close.

Image

Image

Image

Also got the engine nacelle interiors done on the sprue. Bit of a blank canvas these.

Image

Image

And the tail wheel. Interestingly, I read somewhere that the de Havilland works had a load of these left and used them for Vampire nose wheels..... cool huh?

:tw:

Primed for now.

Image

Having fun so far. More soon.

Cheers lads.

Just a quick update on this.

Crew compartment washed and dry brushed.

Image

Image

Will be adding Tamiya tape seatbelts as I want to keep this as oob as possible.

Image

There are two clear parts that are meant to go in here as the fuselage halves go together.

Image

Image

Never going to happen. I'm thinking of glazing here with micro crystal clear at the end of the build.

Error in the instructions. Clear parts 185 and 186 are transposed so take care. Fixed using micro crystal clear thinned with water and run into the gaps. Fingers crossed they hold and don't pop into the interior during the rest of the build.

Image

Image

Time to button up. The fuselage sides bow out a bit at the front so I started at the back using extra thin and clamping as I went along.

Image

Image

Image

Image

That's it for now. Away for a few days then hope to take part in the 48 hour Battle of Britain build this Friday so back on this sometime next week.

Brief update on this build as I'm away from the work bench at the moment.

A closer look at the kit transparencies. I didn't realise that they were such a state until I took a real look.

Image

You can clearly see bubbles in this shot.

Image

And webbing on the nose transparency.

Image

Ah well, fixed these onto the fuselage with diluted crystal clear.

Image

Spent a while sorting seams out but some are still a work in progress, particularly the lower nose that popped open again when I added the nose transparency. A few untidy bits to make good as well. Had started masking up when I noticed the canopy was loose at the rear so carefully added some extra thin cement and taped it up and that's where I had to leave it.

Image

Image

Of course the pitot tube chose this moment to go awol. Surprised it lasted so long.

Image

Image

Image

That's it for now. Back to this soon.

Apologies Nige, but I'm not going to get this done in time. Life and work has been a bit manic since September and my mojo has taken a good kicking.

I've boxed her up and will finish her at some point, if the threads stay up I shall post pics.

Congrats to finishers and thanks to those who have commented.
