Kitty Hawk 1/48 UH-1Y "Venom"

Post by drums75 »

My first project after a few months break (change of house, no room for the hobby :( ).
Now...still no room but I bought the Iwata Neo Air (small little gem for temporary use...) and organised a little corner for the hobby, so here we are...

The kit is ok,nice details, a bit of clean up needed and few delicate parts that were already broken when I opened the box...Kitty Hawk should have a look about it in future releases (Gallery Model cover the delicate parts with foam, for example...).

Well, let's show you my progress...

Part of the "office" assembled
Image

Troop seats harnesses added to give a bit more details in this area.
One of the seats is bad moulded: no harness holes and no pin at the back to fix the seat to the wall. No big deal, easy fix...
Image

The kit comes with decals for the instrument panels (strangely the one for the ceiling one are not in the kit...).
The cable for the FLIR control stick is been added...
Image

The cross bar at underneath of the pilot seats were broken...another easy fix with a bit of glue...but the broken parts are increasing...
Image

The rest of the cabin part painted.
4 intercom's cables added...
Image

Engines and and engine's bays assembled and ready for primer...
One of the pipe on both engine are slightly to short to reach the attaching point. Putty is been use to replicate some rubber join and solve the issue...
Image

The two engine leads. The little rectangular sections where to place the grills were damage, more to fix

Primer time!

The fuselage went together quiet well but the nose that needed a bit of care to fit...nice kit overall

Primer done!
I'm trying different and for me new technique on this build. I did always primed with white or grey primer and then pre-shading. This time I went for the black one and then I will try to paint the model light grey trying to "play" with light coats...
I have used the Vallejo 70.062 Surface Primer Black. Really happy about it, easy to spray, much easier then the white or the grey one...

I'm been using the Vallejo 70.523 Liquid Mask on the fuselage lights (photos above, the lights are black but are been masked...) and on the FLIR turret (as you can see in the photo below). I still preferring the tape to mask the clean parts like windows, windscreen, etc. but I found the Vallejo Liquid Mask great to mask small details...

A bit of progress...
The 2 main coats are done. I've decided to use the Vallejo Model Air Pale Blue Grey (71.046) as main colour and the Hataka Medium Grey (HTK-A046) for the top of the machine scheme.
The Vallejo one went down so well, as usual.
Disappointed about the Hataka one: it was a kind of challenge already to spray the Medium grey as it is so similar to the Pale Blue Gray, much challenging if the paint keep clogging in the airbrush even when I pinned it down 50-50

Image

I have masked the roof and the front with blue tac (well white...) to give the same effect of the real paint scheme that looks likes been painted without follow a straight line...

Next some Klear coat and then let's the fun start to bring the details out...

Thanks Rotorman, said from you it's an honour.

I'm not happy with my paint technique though, I have to be more patient...
