U-Boat Type VIIC 1:144, Revell with Griffon detail set

Post by Skullfish »

ive managed to amass quite a few U-boat variants in 1:144 scale, so thought id throw this one into the ring.

The kit itself is dated 2006 and the mold seems to have borne up quite well, no flash and fairley crisp details, except for the railings which look totally out of scale. Hence the Griffon detail set. Having just looked into the Griffon set i may end up in the sanitarium....queue the Metallica track! it offers a wealth of detail including railings, deck gun with barrel and turned aluminium torpedo! ill wait and see how im getting on before deciding if i want to show that being loaded.

Ive just spent the day experimenting with opening the Flood Vents/Free Flow Holes all along the outer hull. This was going to be the deciding factor on whether or not i was going ahead with this build at this time, but im happy with both my technique and the result....so its game on.

obligatory fashion show for your perusal.

I like the artwork on the box.

Image

bags within bags, what you get for £10-20...depending.
Image
Image
Image
Image

8 pages of the usual revell instructions, ie, workable.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Options, ill read thro my reference books for some inspiration but i may be limited with the detail set a bit...need to do my studying.
Image
Image

Shiney Griffon. Hope its not a temperamental bugger, ive just had the curtains cleaned!
Image
Image

need to get my game face on here.
Image

muchos grassy ar*e!!!
Image

Instructions look like something from a dragon kit! hopefully slightly easier to follow....and easier to read.....and give more relevant information.....anyways i digress.....
Image
Image
Image
Image

OK, follows is my opening of the vents. Larger vents were drilled 3 times, either end then one in the middle, this declogged the hole and left minor work with a scalpel to tidy up. Slow going but thats where we get to catch up on You Tube stuff :th:

2006 on the hull.
Image

the Vents before i start messing with them.

the vents on the opposite side after ive been messing with them.

takes time but worth it i believe. Why are you being crazzy :bash: :bash: i hear my sane side say!! because you can actually see right thro to the other side on some of them while others are obscured by the pressure hull, my geeky side says. :ugeek:

weelll, ive checked the oven, turned the taps off, kicked the cat out the back door, locked the door, made sure my shoes werent inside out and generally floated my boat.

Thanks for Looking.

That's a great looking kit Skullfish, with all that photo etch this is going to be an amazing build. Your pulling out all the stops, looking forward to seeing that photo etch work. :th:

UPDATE

As i said in my Sci-Fi sig entry, ive been without internet access for over a week, but that didnt stop me grabbing some bench time.

What can i say about deciding to try the Photo-etch, hmm. Frak me this stuffs fiddly! But, in at the deep end/balls deep. etc. etc.

All that follows is in no particular. lets just say following two sets of instructions at the same time is a pain. the revell are straight forward but the Griffon ones just seem random in the order in which to do things which is completely independent from the revell. So some familiarity with both sets is essential. It pays to take the time to study everything.

After joining the two hull halves, you get an immediate sense of accomplishment because you get an instant feel for the scale of the finished thing, i started on the mid deck etch where the conning tower sits

Image

some really nice detail added forward of the conning tower and around where the 88mm deck gun will sit. I also at this stage decided to remove the portion of deck where the torpedo loading equipment will be fitted.
Image

hatch covers and hinges installed to the rear of the conning tower deck.
Image

had to remove some of the internal support structure to accommodate the PE torpedo loading hatch.
Image

im not gluing the deck down just yet just incase ive missed anything, which to be honest is very likely.
Image

Conning tower halves and upper deck plate joined. Starting to install the PE to the upper deck side walls.
Image
Image

the griffon instructions call for some added detail to the torpedo plotting control which sits on the conning tower.
Image
Image

fiddly!
Image

i cut the kit component into 3 parts in preparation to replace the centre piece with 0.5mm styrene rod onto which i'll rebuild it with the PE parts.
Image

finished piece setting up, i noticed it was a bit squinty after taking this pick, so ammended that before it set up.
Image

while that was setting up, i revisited the hull in order to tend to the seam line running the full length of the hull. it wasnt too bad and was an easy job.
Image
Image

Attack periscope detailing, first time trying to roll PE into shape. In this instance into a cone shape around the mount.
Image

attack periscope in front of the control room periscope, held on my helping hands so they dont get damaged.
Image
Image

Deck gun next. the original kit part for the 8.8cm SK C/35 deck gun. pretty poor looking but we can try and fix that.
Image

quick blurb on the gun taken from the "Warship Pictorial No 27" published by Classic Warships Publishing, now out of print.

"88mm Deck gun.
This was the secondary weapon on a Type VII U-boat, the primary being the torpedo. Although it was the same calibre as the famous German Army weapon, this naval mount was completely different. This gun was a development of the weapon used by the German Navy during the First World War. The fixed ammunition weight was 21 to 22.5 lbs. per round and could fire 16 rounds per minute with a well trained crew. Its main function was to be used against small craft, or finishing off vessels not sunk with a torpedo, saving that weapon for a more valuable target. Range was 13,000 yards, or about 7.4 miles. Both high explosive (HE @ 21 lbs) and armour piercing (AP @ 22.5 lbs) ammunition was available. It was an effective and reliable weapon."

aluminium barrel from griffon, original barrel cut off and drilled out for good contact with the replacement barrel. Gun mount parts also shown.
Image

here i jumped to the 20mm anti aircraft gun that mounts on the winter garden behind the control deck on the conning tower.
another quick blurb from the "Warship Pictorial No 27".

"Anti-aircraft Weapon
20mm MG C30 on a LC30/27 mounting was the initial anti-aircraft weapon fitted on the Type VII U-boats. Rate of fire was 280rpm, with a range of 5.250 yards, or 3 miles. The magazine held 20 or 40 rounds of either HE or AP ammunition, both with tracer. The 20mm was the most widely used German gun in the Navy and was reliable."

original kit parts for the C30.
Image

PE and aluminium barrel with mount shown in place on the winter garden deck.
Image

ive noticed when i get "in the zone" with PE i just charge ahead, so here is the completed guns with all the added PE sitting ready to mount later on.
Image

i took a break at this point to get on with other stuff. So when i sat down next it probably wasnt a good idea to start back with various tinny/fiddly railings.
i had to cut the molded on railings around the conning tower to be replaced by PE ones.
Image

Image

these are the railings around the wintergarden which you form around the supplied template seen above.
Image
long story short i put these aside till i feel more confident.

favourite glue at this point.
Image

so i went from the scarey railings to the fiddly retractable bollards, found it easier to glue the .5mm styrene rod onto the PE while it was still attached to the fret.
Image

and while they were curing/setting i tackled these pole thingys. they attach on to the deck in various places. the instructions are vague at the start on where they go, untill you get further in.
Image

from bent wire to straight rods. Tip: cut your length then roll under a straight edge, works a treat.
Image
Image
Image.

more later when my camera recharges.

thanks for looking.

UPDATE

Thanks all. Needing encouragement here, this PE is a slog.

heres a shot of my tools and various glues i am trying out. I am figuring out a method of working each of the types of glue. Thin, medium, thick, Gel etc, when to use kicker, when to just hold it...what to hold it with (good tip, Dont use your finger).: :pistols:  :wtf:

Image

the 3 deck plates so far. to be honest they are almost done here.
Image

the 3 rods/poles i rolled earlier, each with 4 fiddly brackets, ready to be placed.
Image

again, heres a wee bit of a jump at this point. was loosing the old mojo. so time for a photo shoot to try and regain a sense of perspective on the whole shebang.
heres all the PE lined up and every component that i have completed all dry fitted. Seeing this made me smile. :D :th:
Image

more smiley shots, cause im now starting to think how to go about painting her.

UPDATE

thanks all for the words of encouragement and even just for stopping by for a looky see. Loved the Holy Cow!

Leaving the extremely fiddly bits to last i started the Torpedo Loading cradle.

Image
Image
Image

Get ready for cries of man overboard, this thing may break me.
Image
Image

tiny end pieces, one of these eventually pinged off to join Tom Cruise in Oblivion.
Image

some creative clamping was instigated (i'll have to watch out for this in future as it may be the first signs of madness)
Image
Image

I looked at No 11 and chickend out. That piece is only about 15mm wide
Image

So. to jump out of the proverbial Frying pan I turned my attention back to the conning tower and started on the water shield around the top lip.
Image

at first i thought the PE would be used in conjunction with the kit part...but no its a replacement in 2 parts. the kit part is the u shaped piece front middle.
Image

it also turned out i had attached the cable stays to the top lip facing the wrong way.
Image

so off they snapped, which turned out to be a good thing cause this meant they werent in the way/or wrong position for the PE water break/shield. in this pic the conning tower is upside down thus better able to fit the water break.
Image

a wee jump. back to the torpedo cradle, shes turned out a bit of a glue queen, ill clean her up after i primer.
Image

scale
Image

then another jump back to the conning tower. heres the water brea/shield with the main cable stays in place. V-Fiddly.
Image
Im thinking of using thin brass rod for the main cables...ill wait and see.that seems a fair bit off yet.

Now. leaving the nightmare for last, heres what the instructions look like for the rails around the wintergarden.
Image

the kit parts on the sprue. they are ugly as hell.
Image

various PE bits for the rails, including the tool they supply for accurate positioning. Also note the Red container top used for keeping all the PE parts in one place and out of the road of my elbows, :th:
Image

hmm. this is going to be interesting.
Image

a couple of the vertical stanchions broke off already. the stainless steel PE is a little less forgiving than the brass. we live and learn..dont bend it too much otherwise it stress fractures.
Image

remember this is upside down, The brass arcs represent the wooden part of the rails. i also employed a PDT to ensure a consisted level when gluing.
Image

side by side, kit parts and PE.
Image

replacement stanchions from 0.3mm brass wire. 4No off.
Image

what the kit part looks like in position.
Image
Image

what my first attempt at the PE looks like....a little wonky, will have to fettle and adjust.
Image
Image

Well, that was my weekends work. Slowly, slowly catchy monkey.

i have thought about painting her in 4 parts. Hull, Main deck, Lower conning tower including periscopes etc, and then the upper periscope structure. This all will then be assembled allowing me to then add the steel cables and final attendant bits and bobs.

sounds like a reasonable plan to me.

Thanks for looking.

UPDATE

welcome back, last time we left off with the wintergarden railings looking a bit wonky.

Image
Image

well after a bit of fettling, cursing and not a small amount of patience i ended up with something a bit more presentable. It helped when i added the lower ring to the "cage" structure.
Image
Image
Image

next up was the main deck railings. only 5 pieces and all in a straight line!! still fiddly though.
i worked on a black background to help my eyes a little. Using white tack to position and raise the railings off the card to superglue where required.
Image
Image
Image

of course the PE railings do not conform to the holes for the kit parts so i offered up the rails and sharpied the required holing.
Image
Image
Image

holes drilled with my new favourite archimedes drill.
Image

last of the hull parts added and seams taken care of with perfect plastic putty.
Image

right. i added some details under the hull plating with some plastic tubes and sheet to simulate the spare torpedo tube and the 4 deck stowage containers. These will also add interest thro the vent holes i painstakingly drilled out way back at the start.
Image
Image
Image

at the same time i also constructed a baffle for the rear flood vents. after all on the real thing you wouldnt be able to see right thro to the other side, various bits of inner hull and structure etc would be visible. I know at 1:144 scale its probably over kill but i know its there.
Image
Image

it'll be primed black before i install it.
Image

Mr Metal Primer was applied on all the shiney bits.
Image

next up was the Torpedo loading equipment. only the pully shapes and the final connection plate thing were provided all the rest was made up from brass rod of various hair thin size. thickest was 0.5mm the thinnest was 0.2mm. I improvised the 2 hooks at the end of the pullys, this give me a wee bit of leeway later when i finally install it....hopefully.
Image
Image
Image
Image

and all mocked up, fingers crossed on this one.
Image

done all i can done construction wise.
Image

a bowl of delicate bits
Image

stern steel cable connections.
Image

bow to stern with all the assemblies and parts ready for primer.
Image
Image
Image

phew what a build...still got lots to do but i think this is one of those turning points that we all reach. so as always thanks for stopping by and looking/commenting. much appreciated.

Awesome! get stuck back in, i found it really good to take a big red pen and score off each part as it was installed. 2-fold encouragement, you get to see where youve been And it makes you feel better the more red marks on the page. childish but it helps 8) Thanks Chief.

Thanks, im glad i went with the PE set, makes the world of difference. As for the instructions, they kind of read like Dragon ones..could do with a few more diagrams of intermediate steps plus of the finished assemblies in place.

Top Tip...lay off the caffeine while handling PE otherwise the ole carpet monster racks up a few more points.
ElCapitan wrote:Looks incredible, no way could I ever tackle something like this!!:
Thanks! and by the way this is only my 3rd build to use PE, i also thought it would be beyond me. Take it one step at a time, read the instructions till you know them well, then just dive in, "sink or swim" to use a nautical analogy.

Ive Primered everything and will lay down some colour (well...shades of grey) sometime in the next couple of days. I may try this Black Base technique thing, i dont know yet.

Update soon Folks. And much appreciate the kind comments and encouragements.
