41 Squadron GR 4 Tornado

Post by Migman »

This will be my next build. Currently finishing Tamyia 1/48 Lancaster with lots of etch. Promised myself not to use so much etch on the next build.
Reference material is Haynes RAF Tornado, Airfix Mag with kit build by James Vaitkevicius, Model Airplane mag kit build bt Greg Phillips. Also various other clips of Tornado from magazines. Tornado SIG.

Famous last words.
Image

As you can see I succumbed to just a bit of etch and other accessories.

First the Eduard interior set. I kind of regretted this as it is completely the wrong colour. I bit the bullet and decided to paint it, all be it fiddly and having to wear a magnifying glass set for 2 hours.

Eduards offering with the incorrect colour.
Image

After 2 hours work this is my offering. I used Mr Hobby Aqueous H337. I am quite happy with it know.

Image

I may have to do something with the glass monitors at a later stage.

This is all for now as I have to finish the Lanc.

I've got one in the stash so will be following...

As for Eduards' colour matches, when it comes to RAF/RN subjects they do seem to be somewhat off!

Can't say what the colours are like for other nations though...
...and pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in Space cos there's bugger all, down here on Earth!

Latest update. Well have started with the undercarriage etch. Not too much of a problem. The hassle I had was with the part numbering by Revell. Parts were on different sprues to the ones named on the instruction sheet. I was going to put the correct ones on here but forgot to write some down as I found them. The sprues overall have quite a bit of flash in places and a couple of spots where the plastic has not quite flowed into the mould. Nothing that cannot be fixed though. The following shows my progress so far.

Since then I have started on the fin and underwing stores. I will post those photos later.

Looking forward to watching this come together. I've a Tornado build thread on here myself so will be interesting to see the different approaches that Revell and HobbyBoss have come up with.

Have moved on a bit since last update. The continuing mis numbering of parts by Revell is most annoying. The refuelling probe was numbered as being on the transparency sprue. The etch is going pretty well all be it fiddly. I have painted the undercarriage legs, Undercarriage doors, and wheel bays with Mr Aqueous H311.

Image

Front end closed and cockpit fits nicely. More photo etch to go in here. I have inserted a piece of plastic card between the front and rear cockpits as the join was awful. Did this with 0.4mm card trimmed at the edges so it doesn't appear so thick.

Image

Nose wheel bay. Still a bit more work to do. More etch to go in.
Image

I fitted a small piece of plastic card where the fuselage side comes in as there was no support for it at this point. This helped a lot when fixing the sides in. All in all not bad fits but I need to do more dry fitting before committing to glue.
Image

I have been doing a bit more etch around the cockpit and fitted the video displays for the back seat. This is out of sequence but should cause no problems. Will have a few more photos in a couple of days. Still haven't finished the Lanc as this has grabbed my attention now. First time I have built a Tornado but I do like Revels approach at the way this goes together all be the parts number marking and the instructions are not particularly clear or could just be me on the instructions.

I am currently working on the wings. From the photo you will see them in position but only dry fitted. When you come to cutting the various parts off the sprues take great care as it would be easy to cut off part othe flap mechanism off as the sprue connection is so thick it is hard to determine where to cut. The moulds must be very old now and getting to the end of life as there is quite a lot of flash on some parts and as said previously the connection to the sprues is very thick in some parts. I have some more photos of various parts I have put together and will upload shortly.

Sorry guys for the late update. Other things going on.
Have proceeded a bit further than i expected before posting an update.

Have taken a while to get this far as the fit is not perfect and it took a lot of patience plus debunking and gluing together again.
A few wires added to the between the front and rear cockpit. Not 100% correct but fills a bit of a void in that area.

Image

Tad more etch in the wings for the flaps to be posed down,

Image

Have put kitchen foil on the canopy mirrors and painted the surrounds. Quite happy with the result. Microfoil adhesive used on the foil and a bit of patience rubbed down with a flat end toothpick.

Image

The following 2 shots of some underwing stores. I tried the paint on the fuel tank to see what it was like. Maybe a bit dark so will have to see about toning it down slightly.
I have re-scribed these fuel tanks as they had raised lines. On looking at some photos on line they are not raised.

You can just make out the small magnets I have put on the fuel tank and pylon. 2 x 1mm x 1mm magnets superglued in on the pylon and fuel tank. 1 x 1mm x 1mm magnet on the Boz pod. I saw this technique I believe on this site but maybenot. The magnets are from First4Magnets. Can be bought elsewhere on eBay.
So if the stores come off no more replying just magnetised back on job done.
Image

Image

Its coming along nicely now but have to sort out the inner of the intakes as I am not happy with those at the moment.
All for now. Catch you all later.
Thanks for the previous comments. Much appreciated.

Sorry for not updating lately but there have been a few personal issues. Also a couple of issues with the kit. i.e. having decided to do the flaps down it wasn't till I tried to fit the sidewinders that I found they fouled the flaps. So I had to dismantle the flaps and settle for them being in the up position. Schoolboy mistake of fitting the undercarriage too early resulted in me braking of the nose wheels. This I sorted with some precision drilling and inserting an axle fabricated from a paperclip through the plastic axle. I have also had an issue with the paint remaining tacky on the sides of the intakes. I have used Mr Hobby Aqueous for this. What I found out was that when I gloss sealed the paintwork I inadvertently missed the sides of the intakes. So when I applied the decals the Micro set softened the paint. I then had to respray them and fortunately not the whole of the jet. I then became disallusioned and put it to one side and proceeded with the build of Airfix's P-40B. This helped restore my mojo and I have almost completed the Tornado and will update with some photos shortly. It is not completely to my liking with the paintwork and the accidents but looks ok from a distance.

Well finished at last. As I have said before it is not my best work but will have to do. Will build another one soon as hopefully I know the pitfalls in the kit and the mistakes I personally made.

I have this kit only a different boxing with different markings. Have not done it yet. You did a great job!

I did the magnet thing on my 1/32 Revell Tornado. Make things much easier. I will be doing it on the 1/48 when I get to it as well.

One of the magnets in one of the pylons...

Image

One of the wings with the two magnets in the attachment spots...

Image

Obviously both were taken before final paiting and all that jazz.
