Kevin's 1/48th B-24 Liberator 8th Air Force build

Post by phippster123 »

This is the kit I have for this build

Image

It's a fairly good kit. Not a great deal of flash. Clear plastic is OK.

This is a picture of my grandfather in front of his plane (front row centre right) in England. He was part of the 8th airforce, 389th bomber group heavy, 566 bomber squadron. I originally wanted to recreate his plane but I could not find a kit for it in my price range.

Image

I started on the cockpit but can't get real far till the replacement parts get here from Revell.

Image

The control yokes were not fully formed as you can see in the pic. This is what I'm waiting on from Revell.

Don't see many B-24 builds (or I don't anyway--maybe I don't look in the right places). Fantastic that there's a family connection. Will you be doing it in drab or metal to match the photo?

Good luck! :pop:

I'm still up in the air about that. I if I do it in drab I can just use the decals for the plane markings. If I go aluminum I have to make the tail and body markings from scratch. I know what the markings should look like but it would be very difficult to do by hand. .

No aftermarket decals for the aluminum?

There are plenty of after market decals for aluminum bodies but not 8th air force. It is easy to do the tail markings (vertical black and white stripes with a black letter C in the white stripe). I can move the tail marking number to the body easy. The Problem is putting the bomber group marking on the body (a large RR I believe) as there are no decals for that part. I will have to mask it from scratch and get it to match on both sides. It would definitely test my very limited skills.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I could cad them up and print it out and cut out the letters to make a mask that would work (trial and error on size). Not sure how to mask the inside of the R. Have to think on that for a bit.

Have you ever used clear or white, inkjet printable decal sheet? Optionally, you could get your CAD file cut in vinyl sign mask at a sign shop.
