Italeri 1/48 Hurricane Mk. I

Well I got this a while ago when I picked up this and a Ducati Panigale.
This will be my first ever Italeri kit. Also my first ever PE sprue too! Oh! And my first ever time spraying Vallejo and AK Interactive paints!
Everything drying after a good soapy bath!
All ready to start and we are OFF!!!
That's the HUGE PE sprue!!! Man did I call it some names today after about one and a half hours I got it into some sort of shape and painted!
Then did the rest of the cockpit, one whole day in the shed just for the cockpit!
All the cockpit bits waiting to be primed and painted. I have probably painted the heads up and instrument panel the wrong colour but at no point in the instructions does it tell you what colour to use!!!
So at the end of the day I had a finished cockpit. Not perfect but I'm quite happy with it!
Hopefully get some time for the engine tomorrow!

YAY day in the shed again today, well, about 5 hours actually.
First another error/omission on the instructions.
8D is actually one single piece from the clear sprue for one of the navigation lights I think!
Did the engine today, another first for me for an aeroplane that is! It is not very good, very vague detail and lots of fitting issues. All the white bits are me adding slivers of styrene to fill the gaps!
Alclad Gloss Black Primer.
All base coated, the frame and firewall in Alclad Stainless Steel and the engine in semi-dull Aluminium. Exhausts in Alclad Copper I think I used.
Before any weathering.
I've used the two on the left for engines! Several different vallejo and Tamiya metal colours for detailing.
Quite pleased with the results.
Think that I should have left the exhausts off though to make it easier to mask off the engine bay when it comes to paint the bodywork?

Thanx RossiM1.
I've been in the shed tonight after work, but only long enough to spray the cockpit bits of the fuselage halves.
I'll be able to get back to it for a few hours Friday hopefully.

Thanx very much for the kind comments!
I have been in my shed, but only got a bit done today.
Just cutting and gluing!
That's the fuselage halves from Wednesday night.
And that's today's work, I made a peg plane!

YAY got a good few hours in the shed today.
I have been doing the wings today, gluing and painting the little bits.
First time I've every done the flaps down!
Got the air intake ready to paint as well. Lots of tiny masking work for the cockpit windows and the wing thingies too!
Front screen.
And that's how I left everything when I came out of the shed. The Sprue pile is getting smaller all the time.

Some great modelling going on here
We do some similar things to engines, I love those AK oil products. AK dark wash is my go-to detail wash to add realism to almost anything
Gonna follow along

Hey guys, thanx for the kind words.
I'm a bit stalled on this model for a couple of days as I've been doing some other things in the shed.
I've made a thing!!! And two more Snowmen are well on the way.
The thing I will link to, the Snowmen I can't show in case somebody that's not supposed to see them, does so!

Love it! You're really doing a great job, especially on that engine. When I saw the unpainted engine and then after you were done, I was very impressed. Can't wait to see more!

YAY, I'm back, had about 3 hours in the shed doing the Hurricane today. I've been adding all the major bodywork and masking up ready for a primer coat or two today.
Engine bay top and left side dry fitted with BluTack as is the cockpit windscreen! I've painted under the cockpit windscreen the same colour as the cockpit as it doesn't say in the instructions where the cockpit colour ends and the fuselage colour starts!!!
Same withing with the air scoop, it says what colour the mesh ends should be, but not the rest of the insides, so I've done it all aluminium even the bit which is the underwing and masked it off. I'm probably completely wrong!
And that's how I left the shed tonight. Not a Snowman in sight!

Nearly a full day's work in the shed today! YAY!
Oh! Before I start does anybody know what these are???
I've searched and searched through the instructions, they are NOT on the unused parts list and I can't find them in the main instructions!!!
If only all planes were a lovely satin black!
While I was waiting for the primer to dry enough to handle and put some pre-highlights on I cut, cleaned up and mounted the last of the parts to be painted, all apart from the last TINY little bits of PE and the clear.
Don't know if this will work the way I want it or not! All depends on how well I can control the colour coats.
Same on the underside.
Then I highlighted the highlights! I'm doing it this was as I'm craptastic at the usual way of preshading and thought that I'd try this way again, see if I can make it any better looking this time? Here's hoping.
All the last little bits done in Ultimate primer! The blob thing on the right is just me messing around with some left over Miliput.
And that's how I left it tonight. Not a whole heck of a lot left on the cutting and sanding. Just painting the body and landing gear mostly now.

I got back into the shed today, about 4 hours worth of quality time with my lovely!!! Think the paints have gone to my head!!!
Anyway.
I've got worms! This is the second or third time I'm trying this method of masking and I love rolling out the white tack and laying it down. This time I did that for the outline, but to fill in the space I CUT very thin strips of the white tack straight off the sheet as it comes in the packet, that was MUCH easier and a lot quicker than pulling off a lump of the stuff and rolling out the lump!
All filled in. About 2 hours work!
That's the green sprayed, my first time spraying AK Interactive from their RAF Colours set. I'm very please with it, a good colour and goes down nice, I did notice a bit more tip dry on the needle the with Tamiya colours, but I didn't put any retarder in my mix so that may be the reason!
All ready for the brown tomorrow.
Started painting the wheel assembly with Vallejo Aluminium, another first time in anger too!

Things are progressing well, all the top colours are done now except for the red of the gun banks. I've weathered the landing gear parts and clear coated everything all ready for when I'm next able to attach the thing! Which should be Sunday with any luck.
Round two with the worms, I had to clear coat over the green and base as after I had just sprayed the green and no gloss coat over it the white tack wouldn't stick!!! But with Alclad Aqua Gloss I gave it a couple of hours to dry and all way fine!
Turned out nice, a couple of bits were I didn't get 100% perfect coverage but I think it looks OK. If only modelling had an auto-correct button!
Small bits all weathered and glossed. Oh! And I've lost another piece to the carpet monsters and I haven't even got carpet in the shed! A small piece from the landing gear!
This piece in fact.

OK, I've been in work until 5 today, but I managed to get an hour or two in the cave!
YAYAYAY
All that I've done is mask the little blighter up and spray AK Interactive Sky colour on the bottom of the plane, still having a couple of problems with the AK paints! It's a bit hit and miss on the consistency! Got one lot almost blocking the airbrush altogether, must have had a blob of thicker stuff in the mix. But it's down now! Then clear coated with Alclad Aqua Gloss.
Oh! I've also made a Styrene replacement for the missing part! It's about 1cm long!
And that is how it all looked when I left tonight. I'm all ready for decalling tomorrow, YAY can't wait!!!

Well it's been a bit of a hit and miss, good and bad day today! And I still hate decals!!!
All started well except for the very first decal on the right I managed to get it to curl an edge while it was still in the water soaking, it had only been in seconds and it curled and creased, had a heck of a time getting the crease out! First decal must have been put in in too hot water!
First of the REALLY big decals on the under side (this is mostly why I picked this scheme, for the big scary decals) as soon as I put the decal down over the little bump and applied any pressure it cracked! The black mark is where some of the cracked decal landed, I tried to pick it off with a knife!!! That's when I found out that Tamiya Decal solution STRONG is too hot for the paints that I am using as the paint under the bit of decal lifted with the piece just like the consistency of tacky contact glue. I'll try and fix them and then hide them with some chipping!!!
The second of the BIG decals and this happened! I didn't even apply ANY pressure this time. Did I mention that I HATE decals?
Tried too soon to fix it and I've ended up with this! It's a real pity as all the rest of the decals have laid down into the panel lines and contours lovely.
Case in point, that's the one that had the crease in it, it laid down that well in the end you can even see the faint lines of the different colours of the camo!
All decals on and I've started some very rudimentary chipping, you guys will probably say it's WAY too much, and probably is, but I've wanted to try a very damaged paint job for a while! I'm using Vallejo's Aluminium and I'll wash over it when finished! Duuno if it's going to look any good, but I'm having fun trying!
Landing gear bits ready to be assembled apart from the scratch built bit and I found out where my two odd pieces that I thought were access go, DOH, I missed them in the instructions!
That's it for today, but I get to do it all again tomorrow!!! YAYAYAYAYAY
Any thoughts, comments (good or bad) or ideas on how to fix the damage to the decals and paintwork would be great and especially thoughts (again good or bad) on the chipping too would be great. I'll do some more detailed pics on the chipping and any attempt I have on fixes after tomorrows session.

Besides the slight mistake on the decal you did a nice job. Great finish on them. Keep it up!

Thanx for your kind words AridTalons!
Well another good day/bad day! Well only one bad thing happened so that's better than yesterday!
That's the fix I did on the right decal and paintwork! Not TOO bad!
And the left wing, NOT so good.
I forgot to spray the red markings on the gun banks, so had to do them today! And that happened! It happened when I was taking the masking tape off! Have I ever said that I HATE decals!
That's the top silver chipping done!
The bottom done!
And some close-ups. All the decal mistakes hidden!!!
All done with the chipping now! Tomorrow washes! Fun!

An all good day today! YAY. And I'm quite pleased with the results. The plane is almost finished.
In the past I have always covered the whole plane with a wash and got a bit lost, so this time I've done it in sections, which has worked a LOT better for me being able to just concentrate on one small part of the piece. Right wing done.
And a close up!
Underside I went a bit dirtier!
Again in close up!
Landing Gear in, it looks nice, I was going to mask it after everything was done and spray it the same green as the cockpit but didn't want any more decals lifting, so I've left it the same as the under side and just weathered it slightly.
Unmasked the cockpit and put it in the open position. Going to leave the engine open too.
And that is how I left it tonight with a cotton bud spacer keeping the landing gear in the right position.
Should be able to get it finished Thursday.

That's one battered Hurri! Lovely job and good save with the decals. If it makes you feel any better I've never built a kit where something hasn't gone wrong. It's how you deal with the mistakes in this game that sorts the men from the boys.

Welp. It's finished.
All in all quite pleased with it. Had no real problems with the kit except for the ones that I made for my self! A bit a work had to be put into the AK Interactive colours I used for the the main three body colours but nothing as drastic as all that.
Anyway on with a few final pictures!
The little nubby Arial just behind the engine I had to make as I lost the kit one! Engine covers are held on with a couple of bits of Blutack!
I kinda like the chipping that I've done over most of the plane, but I'm not sure at all about what I did with the leading edges of the wings? Looks wrong, I was going for a look like strips had been peeled off!!!
I like the engine, just wish it had a bit more definition in the detail. I'd love to do a 1/32 scale one with a nicely detailed engine but most if not all are out of my price range.
Again not sure about the chipping on the flaps.
There we go done! I'm not going to do any kit models for a bit no, going to do some papercraft next, and then the next two kits I do will be bikes, so it'll be some time before I do another plane, but when I do it will not be anything with the RAF two colour Type A or Type B scheme!!!
Thanx for looking in guys and thanx for all the kind comments.
