Trumpeter 1/32 JU87-R Stuka

Post by Les0012 »

Okay this is the third attempt to do this post.........

Have went and bought the JU87-R in 1/32, This will be the first try at a build in this scale.

The box art.

The sprues are well packed in the box with a section for the clear canopy parts.
ImageDSCF0039 by Les Goodison, on Flickr

Also bought some aftermarket for the build , seat belts, interior and canopy masks

The plastic looks good and well detailed, I won't post picks of all 13 sprues as they will be well documented in other threads, there are 315 parts and a photo etch fret with 14 parts as well and the tyres are made of hard plastic.

The clear sprue is well packed in both the box and its own packaging I am not opening the packing until I neen to.
ImageDSCF0047 by Les Goodison, on Flickr

The decal sheet is in its own bag and again will not be opened until required,

The instructions are in a pamphlet of 16 pages and look very detailed, the colour call out gives the paint schemes for 3 aircraft ( I hav'nt decided which one I will do yet.

This looks like daunting build for my limited skills but I will give it my best shot and hopefully will finish it in time.

A couple of pictures taken from Wikipedia

A short description of the R model taken from info in the kit box,

A long range version of the JU 87B was also built, known as the JU 87R. They were primarily intended for anti shipping missions. The JU 87R had a B-series airframe with an additional oil tank and fuel lines to the outer wing stations to permit the use of two 300L under wing drop tanks. This increased fuel capacity to 1,080 litres, (500 litres in the main fuel tank of which 480 litres were useable + 600 litres from the drop tanks). To prevent overload conditions, bomb carrying capacity was often restricted to a single 250Kg bomb if the aircraft was fully loaded with fuel.

Total production amounted to 972 Ju 87-R (105 R-1,472 R-2, 144 R-4), all built by Weserflug. The last JU87R rolled off the production line October of 1941.

Quick update on the build,

Started last night and built up the engine block and components, I have primed them this morning in Vallejo Base Grey (71-097), just for a change to see what it came out like, and not to bad me thinks.

Leaving it to dry for a while then it will be painted in Mr Hobby H339 Engine Grey,Mr Hobby H70 RLM 02 Grey and Steel a colour which I don't have yet.

The cockpit is nearly at the complete point just a few bits of pe to go in and the rear seat belts that can't go in until the walls are on. Painted in RLM 02, the floor in RLM 66 black gray then gloss coated and AK European dust pigment. The seat belts are Eduard.

Onwards and upwards as they say,

The build is progressing "slowly" as I think I am way out of my depth here,

The cockpit is in and the to fuselage half's are on and together, not a bad fit but I did need a bit of filler here and there,
ImageDSCF0070 by Les Goodison, on Flickr
Not the best photo but you get the idea!

Next the wings and nose were fitted, again a fairly good fit but a wee bit of filling required,
ImageDSCF0069 by Les Goodison, on Flickr

The gun bays are built and fitted into the wings
ImageDSCF0073 by Les Goodison, on Flickr

I have now primed the model with Ultimate grey and it has shown up a few spots where a little Mr surfacer will be used to fill the gaps
ImageDSCF0074 by Les Goodison, on Flickr
ImageDSCF0076 by Les Goodison, on Flickr

Well that's as far as I have managed to get so far

Thanks for looking at my mess Les

Yer Les your right, just not wanting to start another build just yet. Bench is already over crowded, plus my mother in law is here for a few more weeks yet so family first and all that.

To be fair she would mind me hiding away, but feel its rude. Plus after yesterday i may just have a cunning plan !!!!

Update,Update,Update

Okay so I have now managed to get some paint on and have her up on her legs,

The whole aircraft was primed in Ultimate Grey, and the underside painted in Tamiya XF-23 Light Blue, The Topside is done in Mr Hobby Aqueous H66 RLM 79 Sandy Brown and a bit of post shading with a little XF-1 Flat Black added to the H66. I'm not very good at this painting thing but am quite happy with it.

The chipping (if you can call it that), is the old sponge and Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver method

Now I have to give her a gloss coat, decals and then get the weapons built painted and on and a bit of weathering

Here's some piccies of her at the current stage of the build.

Ok everyone, It's been a while since I updated the build,

The Stuka is now basically complete minus weapons.

She has been painted in Sand Brown on top with Light Blue on the underside gloss coat 1 was AK gloss, then decalled and Gloss coat 2 Hannants Gloss. She was then covered in Ultimate Dark Dirt and when dry washed off with water and paper towel and then finished in AK Matte coat.

Some photos of the bird as she stands

ImageDSCF0087 by Les Goodison, on Flickr

As it's only the bomb along the centre line and the two external drop tanks that are going on the next photos will probably be the final reveal.

This, for me, has been a monster of a build but I have enjoyed it, mostly, hope you have too.

Thanks for looking and the encouragement along the way
