Racing GB? F1, GT, etc...

Post by Lysus »

There was some chit-chat in the Postman thread a while back about maybe doing an F1/racing kind of GB and I thought I'd see who was interested. I can't devote time and resources to it like I do with Summer Sci-Fi, but I can certainly see if others want to just do one for fun.

I was thinking maybe start October 1 and running to...whenever. I dunno, maybe even make it a six month thing to keep it relaxed.

I'd like to hear some thoughts, who'd be interested, etc. For example:

- What to build? Should it be only F1, or ANY racecar, or ANYTHING that races (planes, boats, scooters, trucks)? Personally I prefer wide open, but I'd leave that to the crowd to decide.

- If there's folks who want to pony up some prizes I'm ok with it, but that's on them to follow through and I think I'd rather do a random draw than engage in judging for it. I'm already on the hook once a year for sending out prizes so I'm going to bow out on that for this GB :shifty: But again, thoughts are appreciated.

I can be cajoled into doing a reveal vid at the end. I work for beer or scotch. :cheers2:

So let me hear your thoughts, plenty of time to decide and we can move the start date if need be. Like I said, I'd prefer a relaxed build for this, something to dig into casually over the fall/winter. I have a JS11 Ligier on my shelf asking me every day to build it, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

I'd be up for any racecar. Never built a car, and this would get me started. I'm assuming somewhere out there is an Audi Quattro to build.

I could be tempted to break the "No more kits this year" rule as the "Lysus made me do it" clause definitely applies!

Would like a long lazy run time for this one though as the bench looks a little busy for the next couple of months.

That's the spirit!

Yeah, I've had some inputs and the general feeling is to keep it low key and long. Also been told that the 2018 Le Mans race might be a good end point in June, making for a nearly 9 month build. Something maybe to keep steam in the boiler, so to speak, might be to phase in the types of build as we go.

For example on Oct 1 bikes and F1, Nov 1. boats and GT, Dec 1 planes and Nascar, etc. The idea is speedy builders can get through their builds while the rest of us mortals can work at our own paces. Any thoughts?

I'd also been sort of intrigued with the idea of it ending on a Le Mans themed 24 hour build on the day...but not sure how I'd work that.

Sorta like the speed comparison you see at the F1 in melbourne when the race a street car vs a v8 race car vs an f1 car?

Interesting concept, although could you split the bikes and F1 cars up?

Maybe build any of those categories from start to finish and have separate categories to judge?

Doesn't have to have prizes. even certificates per categorie

What might be nice, every one builds what they want, and when it's all done, sort it into the same groups and then judge per group?

I like the idea of finishing on the le mans weekend but not sure what you could do for a 24-hour thing unless it's something like egg-cars (do they exist???) and maybe spread it over the two days of the race weekend?

Understand what you're trying to do by staggering the starts for the sub-categories but that means the starters in the 3rd group get a couple fewer months for the built, but if it's a 9-month timeframe then that may not be a problem anyway.

I do like the idea of judging by separate categories; but maybe also have an overall winner too - kind of like "best in class" and "best in show"

I like the Le Mans end date, I'm also all in on a 24h build during the race. That's something I'll be doing anyway and have been trying to do for a lot of years. I usually cheat a bit by having the body in primer before the start of the race. Here's a couple of builds I've done during Le Mans 24h race during the years. So it can be done, it just takes a bit of planning, quick work and no sleep.

Yeah, just spitballing here to see what folks think. I was thinking if we start in October and end mid-June that's like nine months ao the last group would open with four or five months left to go. Still mulling it over...
adrian1980 wrote: Fri Aug 25, 2017 4:25 pm What might be nice, every one builds what they want, and when it's all done, sort it into the same groups and then judge per group?
Possibly. Right now I'm not personally seeking to do any judging but if member want to do prizes they're certainly able to. I could coordinate it a little but until we get more input (and what folks want to donate) I'm not announcing anything yet. We'll see.

Yeah, those wouldn't be the final groups (what I had posted) but were just for demonstration purposes. We'll see what the interest builds to over the next couple weeks.

As for the 24 hour build, I dunno, just something I think would be cool to try to do. Not sure how I'd manage to make that a "thing" that the forum could do, maybe in a hangout or facebook album. Problem is not all forum users like hangouts or facebook so we'd alienate someone regardless of what we'd do.

I normally don't go for the GB's as the only one I entered a few years ago I didn't get completed BUT!
As this is race inspired and is open to Bikes AND has a potential long build time, (because i'm not the quickest builder), then I'd be interested, what would the rules be?

Just an update on thoughts so far, concerning start date:

October 1 through Le Mans in June or November 1 to June? Really just a difference between 8 months and 9 months, either one being a nice, leisurely build pace. The benefit to November would be to give folks time to source up a kit and, on a selfish note, time for me to finish the Summer Sci-Fi SiG :p

Carry on!

And maybe if it goes well I'll finish that Ferrari my dad started. I might feel ready by then.

Lysus wrote: Fri Sep 08, 2017 6:48 pm Just an update on thoughts so far, concerning start date:

October 1 through Le Mans in June or November 1 to June? Really just a difference between 8 months and 9 months, either one being a nice, leisurely build pace. The benefit to November would be to give folks time to source up a kit and, on a selfish note, time for me to finish the Summer Sci-Fi SiG :p

Carry on!
Yes i like the sound of November. It can take months for anything to arrive to New Zealand. Im still waiting on some gravity colors paint that i ordered in May. They are onto the third attempt to send :ooops:
Cheers Gav

On The Bench OK where do I start :wtf:

Maybe a funny car, Oooo that would be cool, have a couple of those Revell kits squirrelled away too and far more 1/20 F1 kits that a sane person should own :shifty:
Make anything you got and don't worry about what others build, we will all have a blast, learn stuff and goof around

If you need prizes again Jason, let me know
